This is the one of the best how-to videos I have seen! Once I figured out the Allen and Torx sizes, doing both rear brakes took only 1 hour. Hardest part was getting the wheels back on! Front brake pads and rotors tomorrow!
I've done 50+ brake jobs in my life but this was the first with the electric parking brake on my BMW 550. The video really helped, thanks Bav Auto. Someone asked about whether or not they need to buy the piston compression tool. No. Most time you can use your two thumbs and slowly push the piston in. Sometimes you need to use one of the old brake pads, flip it so the pad side is on the piston, then compress gently from the back with a large channel lock (16" - 4" jaw) or a large C-clamp. One other note, when turning the electric brake center hole clockwise, understand it will take 30-40 quarter turns of a ratchet. It will finally stop. A handy tip is to have a jack stand under the caliper to support it while you prepare the pads and clips, it takes the strain off the brake hose.
Hey thanks for making this video. a couple questions from when I was working on a 2018 X3 and ran into a couple issues. When retracting the parking brake, I got it all the way to the end stop, but the piston wouldnt retract in when using a c-clamp. I thought it might have been due to the parking brake not fully retracted so i tried rotating it fully counterclockwise, then clockwise again. When that happened, the torx bit on the caliper side was able to spin more and now doesnt hit an end stop. The piston also came out of the dust boot and I was leaking brake fluid ( I messed up somehow, trying to figure out exactly where or how). I ordered a new dust boot and plan to rebuild and bleed the system. My questions are, is the park brake destroyed to where I need to buy a new one or can i somehow tighten the nut on the threaded portion behind the piston to repair it? How can I get the piston to fully retract afterwards so I can get the pads in? Should I open up the bleeder valve to release some pressure in the system? This is the first BMW i've worked on. Other cars i've replaced pads and rotors for didnt have this kind of system.
Excellent and clear video. Just one more thing. When you compress the piston, keep an eye on the brake fluid vessel in the engine compartment. If it is filled up to high , it may overflow when brake fluid is pressed back to the vessel.
Good and clear step by step directions. What I notice about this and many other brake service vids; no one cleans the area first with Brake cleaner spray, and no one uses one or two drops of penetrating oil on bolts and nuts that have not moved since factory assembly, AND lastly, no anti-seize upon reassembly.
Great video sir! For all you novice techs, the special skinny 15mm isnt absolutely necessary, ( normal 15mm will fit on most models), and you can compress the piston with your hand or a simple c clamp. Once again great video and to the point! This guy is good!
@@umustdv81 No need for for the skinny 15mm, I have been using a flat head screwdriver in the slot (small opening) to prevent it from spinning (top for clockwise/bottom for counterclockwise) for decades. I didn't know there was a tool for it. 😅😅😅
Excellent video. Clear instruction and specific tool needed. I don't have experience to work with electric parking brakes. But now I'm sure I can replace the break pads. Thank you Bavarian Autosport.

I have found it’s useful to loosen the brake disc (rotor) hub fastening bolt while the parking brake is still activated, to avoid rotating the disc. This is especially useful on the front discs (RWD cars). The disc fastening bolt is frequently stuck from rust).
Darren Senerat I wish they would provide torque values for all the bolts. They mention the Bentley manual but unfortunately it doesn't exist for the F10/11 body style
Excellent tutorial. Thank you! You have earned my business in the future. Just a reminder to be sure the connector on the actuators are fully engaged. One of mine was very tight and didn't fully engage the first time. Needless to say, I got the dreaded “Parking brake malfunction”.
Thanks! Did this today. To newbies like me who are intending to do this, first step before jacking up car is to disengage the park brake and chuck your wheels! And dont over tighten the electronic park brake the casing will break! Take it from me
I can tell you that there is no need for complication on this job at all. This applies to F10's and F25's. The official method isn't even using workshop mode, they point to a SST. Even with workshop mode, you still need to push the piston back. Basically you can do it very quickly using a cheap windback kit with the 3 pin one. Remove the two 13mm guide bolts (Replace those bolts, aluminium with blue threadlocker on them). Replace the anchor guide springs (if available). Keeping low tension on the plate on the windback kit, rotate the piston with the windback kit clockwise and the piston will go in, do this till the piston bottoms out. Only use brake cleaner on the brake parts, brake anchor plate has a surface coating and a wire brush or sand paper is not allowed in the official repair instructions. Lightly grease the pad sections that contact the brake anchor points and fit them in. Wire brush the hub ring to allow wheels to go on easier. Torque guide bolts to 15nm (these are one time use stretch ones). Torque wheels in a star pattern to 140nm. The park brake will self adjust once 5km has been exceeded on a drive (they will not engage right after fitment). Bed in brakes as usual.
Depends on the car, all bolts must be replaced. Use a Snap-On Techangle 1/2", no lubricants or anti-seize is to be used. F01 to F18 (except for F03) 110nm - M12x1.5. F03 - M14x1.5 - tighten to 150nm, release 90 degrees, tighten to 150nm, tighten 180 degrees +- 15 degrees. F25 and F26 - 75nm, tighten to 45 degrees and then 10 degrees. - M12x1.5
Really nicely done. I didn't realize that you could just remove the actuator and it wouldn't cause any lights. I bought the tool and it has worked great on a VWs, Audis and a few Mercedes. I will try it on a 2011 750I soon enough.
See the last 2 vids mentioned that you cannot perform this job without a tool that will release the PB to the out condition. Then told us the tool is cheap 😂 Glad i found this video
You forgot to mention that after replacement you have to pump brake pedal BEFORE start the car. Otherwise, the hydraulic brake code will pop out and you'll need a scanner to reset a code.
I always do this before starting the car to take the slack out between the caliper piston and new pads, but it will in some cases set a light if you do it powered on. Great tip

As a guy who's worked on cars for 30 years - if anyone ever wanted to add anything to this instruction - I guess that would be purely personal - rather than factual. One thing though - did I overhear - or does the voiceover say "refer to the Bentley repair manual"? While mixing up two car brands starting with "B" - this is probably no big deal, either. Have replaced rear pads on my 2008 A6 (with the EPB, using completely truly original VCDS) - and the procedure on my 2012 (haven't done its brakes yet) F11 - as portrayed in this video - looks extremely similar. Except - I don't think there's a torx bit on rear of the EPB motor on the audi - and I wouldn't bother, either - VCDS is extremely easy to acquire and set up and use. Does it all make sense? Bentley, BMW, Audi? Well. Who knows. Thanks for the video, greetings from Latvia.

Excellent video. My BMW 640d has electric parking brake. However, your video does not show if you also need to release the parking brake from the control and if the ignition needs to stay on while doing the job to stop the parking brake coming on. Which is the case? Thanks
Hello, is there another part on the rear brakes for the AUTO HOLD feature? I have not been able to find a video that properly shows how AUTO HOLD works in conjunction with the rear brakes. I have viewed only 2 good videos (your video being the best) that clearly denote how to work with an Electronic Parking Brake. I have a 2020 X5 xDrive40i with MSport added (3.0l 6cyl), but the brakes are the 4 piston, non-colored caliper, not the large Brembo-type that is on the V8 MSport/Competition versions of this vehicle. I followed all instructions and it was easy. But I didnt bleed it after the change and it seems to be fine. Not like a standard brake job I normally do. Did you bleed yours?
Just had pads and rotors replaced on a 2018 BMW with an electronic parking brake. When applying the brakes after driving for about 20 minutes the car shudders so bad it rattles the right rear passenger door. Shudder is also felt between the driver and front passenger seat. What could be causing this shuddering? No brake pedal pulse and the steering wheel is not shaking side to side. Fantastic video - did not know there was a difference between handling the electronic parking brake on the left and right rear brakes.
Since the front of that piston is notched could you just rotate with the proper brake compressing tool while turning clockwise instead of removing the whole electric parking brake motor?
I think you need to bleed the brakes a little to change a fluid to brake fluid clean it out a little bit make sure there's no air bubbles in there or whatever
Great video. I own a 2021 M440i. I have a scan tool to retract the EPB, my question is do I still have to remove the EPB from the back of the caliper before I can retract the caliper piston? Does the caliper piston push in or do you need a tool that turns the caliper piston back into the caliper?
this was an outstanding tutorial thx- one odd item of note ur ratchet direction lever seems backwards??? never seen that before and i been working with ratchets for 35 + years- anyway nice effort !

Great video. I own a 2021 M440i. I have a scan tool to retract the EPB, my question is do I still have to remove the EPB from the back of the caliper before I can retract the caliper piston? Does the caliper piston push in or do you need a tool that turns the caliper piston back into the caliper?
You can leave the EPB in if you can retract it electronically.
You use this method when you don't have the scan tool
@@RadoHudran That's what I thought. Thanks.
