I think that was the guitar that was stolen from him after they played a show a few years later. He eventually got it back but he said he could never find the same tone from any other guitar. There's actually a TH-cam video of him talking about how it was stolen and how he got it back.

From back in the days when MTV actually played music (yes, I know this was from BBC2!) and seeing one of your favourite bands on TV was such a rare treat.
And, if you were lucky enough to know in advance they'd be on, you'd record it on VHS.
And, if you wanted to work out a song on guitar, you had to put the time into trying to figure it out as opposed to just clicking on a TH-cam video!
People listened to albums as opposed to playlists. And you could usually tell pretty quickly from looking at one of your peers what sort of music, if any, they were into. Nowadays, they all seem to look pretty much like they were mass produced on the same blandly inoffensive assembly line! Damn, I'm getting old!!

RATM, by most of the former and current band members, have all stated they were a hardcore punk band and followed punk's ethos, anti-consumerist, anti-commercialism, left-wing aegis, concept of music writing and musicianship. Zach de la Rocha was even the lead singer in a L.A. hard-core punk band in the late 80's meeting Tom Morello and forming the core of RATM.
Strangely enough, when Metallica first burst upon the L.A. music scene in the early 80's when excessive, glam metal was booming, their loud, fast, aggressive, thrashing sound was considered by many L.A. promoters, club owners, other rival bands as being "too punk". L.A. wasnt ready for Metallica then, and thats why they moved to S.F. in mid-80's. If one listens to some of Metallica's early demo songs, recordings and Kill Em' All and Ride the Lightning, their pace, overall sound, fast, aggressive time-signatures which were considered a bit radical and advanced then, they came across like an American Motorhead.
