      Not everyone can afford to pay for expensive classes and most tuners I have seen have learned by just doing it and learning from them the only way to truly learn anything is trial and error or like he said research I am a self taught mechanic no schooling and though I may not know all the technical jargon I have rebuilt engines and I will be building a built capable of holding 1000whp in a large SUV either by books or watching videos I fully support you brother haters always going to hate they have nothing better to do with their lives apparently. I completely agree with most all of what he said... I’ve been tuning for 15+ years myself with HPtuners as well...
    Another thing I found out is that everyone you talk to has the BEST tuner around(just go and ask them yourself)...
    People don’t realize that alot of seasoned tuners out there will go in and make changes to your car BEFORE starting the dyno pulls. This is what he calls “just making it safe”, by retarding the timing and making it richer than it already is. I call it setting himself up for a good baseline start from... So at the end of the day when it makes another 95HP, you wonder where the hell all that extra power came from...

    • @jaydaartist4033
      @jaydaartist4033 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Bro i really wanna get into tuning and i hope this isn’t a dumb question but then u said the tuner set a baseline by making it richer, does he do that to add more air in the ratio or what. Again i’m just getting into tuning so don’t roast me too hard.

    • @jelenekoutdoors9023
      @jelenekoutdoors9023 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@jaydaartist4033 Rich is more fuel, the first thing you wanna do is pull timing to a safe level, Goat rope does -5, you just gotta watch these vids, he does a series on beginning hp tuners 101, now depending on what mods you made it's a good idea to add fuel, after you put timing to a safe level, fatten or Richin up are just terms. If it's to fat or to rich there is to much fuel, you will see alot of smoke you can cause fouling of spark plugs, overheating, or worse wash out, but not to worry take baby steps, follow this guy. Just like he said there is only so much there what is really most important Air,Fuel then spark, dont get lost in the tables or graphs.

    • @timm5970
      @timm5970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jaydaartist4033 heres some basics. Rich means more fuel and lean means less fuel. When its rich the engine stays colder and when its lean it gets hotter. This matters when it comes to timing. Typically more timing advanced means more power. If u add too much timing the gas starts ignitining unpredictably and in return can bend rods, blow up spark plugs, damage valves, and blow holes in the pistons. So to keep that from happening they make it way rich before they add timing so it stays cool. Theres much more on why too rich is bad, too lean is bad, how octane affects detonation and all sorts of things but thats the meat and potatoes

  • @410kane
    @410kane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    Keep in mind that tuning sometimes adds more fuel to cool the combustion temps which affects emissions. I basically added a clutch controlled supercharger and piggyback ecu to my car so when smog comes around, I hit the switch and the supercharger cuts off while aem fic switches to from A to B map to run stock.

    ...just a positive " caution " to newbies... always ask, check, watch, and pay attention to what you are doing and always save the oem factory tune before you make changes. You can do quite some damage to your vehicle if you have tunnel vision on making more power. You must be careful with ignition timing and air/fuel ratios so you don't cause a knock or overheat your exhaust, and shift points should be changed with care do you don't cause a slip or smoke your torque converter...just be careful and enjoy learning. Also be especially careful if the vehicle has high mileage.

    Better late than never. Awesome video mate! Allot of quality info right there. I personally use EFILive to tune factory GM controllers on LS engines. Here's a few things that helped me when I was starting out. 1) While forums are a great source of information, I find allot of people on them are enthusiasts. Definitely seek professional advice if possible. 2) 9/10 Tooners only tune WOT. Learn how to properly dial in VE tables with correct injector data (if obtainable) to do the job properly. 3) Understand that 90% of the tables in factory GM controllers are purely there for emissions purposes. These tables do not exist in Haltech/Holley/Motec ecu's as they don't need to be. 4) Understanding how DTCs work for tuning things like camshafts, boost upgrades, larger throttle bodies etc will make life a whole lot easier. 5) Courses (Beginner only) are a great way to learn a new platform as that's generally what they teach. In my case, HPT. Keep it up!

    Tuning is a real youtube trade.
    BTW learning how NA carberator engine works will teach the basics way better than electronic injection. Skim over that topic first. Air-fuel-spark is simplified in older engines because you can see each action taking place. For example, the mechanical dizzy will illustrate perfectly how timing should be advanced, you can see the concept in real tim! Then seeing the carb spray fuel, plenty of dyno vids showing this, will also give you a permanent lesson
    I tried understanding EFI “first” it’s pretty complex but, after seeing NA carb motor operate everything EFI made much more sense.

    I agree 100% man, you hit the nail on the head. All the big tuning schools and books etc are a waste of money in my opinion. Like you said all the infomation is out there on the fourms, its just knowing where to find it and knowing how to spot bullshit, theres plenty of that on the fourms as well.
    This kind of tuning isnt for everyone, you have to know how to tune an engine but you also have to be pretty good manipulating software on a computer. Guys like my dad can get a carb and a distributor tuned up real nice but can't use a computer for more than internet explorer. So you gotta be proficient with a computer to have a chance at this.
    On the other hand its really not that complicated. If you have a basic understanding of electronics and can read you're pretty good off. Start little by little, save each change you make and change one thing at a time. With a little common sense its not that hard especially if you can tune a carburetor and distributor and understand how an engine works.

    On the point of finding a tuning device that has good forum support, I very strongly recommend everyone to stay away from SCT/Derrive/Bully Dog (all basically the same company) devices. I started tuning around 2006 with SCT devices and loved them. Their forum back then was amazing. There was so much forum support -- so many knowledgeable people at the ready to help with questions, issues, etc. I took a long break from tuning and recently got back into it. I purchased a new SCT device (X4) and signed up for the forum again. In doing so, I discovered that the forum has radically changed. There is now a small clique of "old-schoolers" who are always quick to help each other and, at the same time, completely ignore everyone outside of their clique. I've asked a handful of questions, and each one has been viewed multiple times, but absolutely no replies. After I asked certain questions that went ignored for weeks, some of the clique members later asked the same or similar questions and - boom - other clique members swoop right in to help. SCT devices and their software (called Advantage) are amazing and reasonably priced, but don't expect any forum support at all.

I almost decided that buying SCT now, and HP when I figure out which form of forced induction Im going to go with was a reasonable plan. Thanks for the info, may just get HP now and teach myself

    it would be nice to make a video about what do I need to start tuning. Do I need hardware, is it different to every car, every make, every region ... do I need software? specific to each ECU or specific to what? Is it "I buy and it's mine to use" or I need to pay every month/year/or use/ for the subscription. Do I need licensing ... In other words, what do I need to buy in order to start tuning. And the other question is: Is tuning freezable as a hobby (weekend worrier in my garage for myself, friends, and family) or is it ONLY make sense to do this as a full-time job.

This is super easy and I've been doing this for 20 years while street tuning my cars.
