Is it a BAD idea to BUY a Dodge Challenger Hellcat with a 6-speed manual?

  • The Challenger Hellcat has really been a game changer for Dodge. Over 700HP from a 6.2L supercharged V8 and a choice of either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission. This car is the closest someone can get to an original muscle car. Even though a manual transmission is offered is it really the right choice or is it smarter to go with the ZF 8-speed automatic?

One problem though from my experience is the two outside vents will spit out whatever fluids are sitting on the motor and if I don't dry the engine after a wash I'll find spots on the hood and roof unless I let it air dry a while before driving. M6 Hellcat is a blast. Mine is heavily modded and pushing 17lbs of boost. You will need a clutch upgrade if you plan to run the car really hard.. Of course the driveshaft and axles can be a weak link if drag racing. Always a blast to run the car. Its never boring. You want a little more excitement install a pedal commander. Dont set it too high or downshifts will result in a change of shorts😁. I also have a Barton pistol grip shifter which makes shifting much nicer.

I know this comment is late for Joe, but there are easy fixes for the shift throws. I installed a Barton shifter in my 2012 R/T and it is *much* better to shift than the OEM shifter. It's very tight and seems nearly half the movement of the OEM unit. Hurst also makes a shifter for the Challenger as well, but the consensus is the Barton is the better one to use. I wouldn't know, as I've never driven one of those. So, it seams this is the only thing needed to make this car perfect.

Most people don't drive the better trim levels daily, and are only used on the weekends or at the strip. So you can find really nice ones with low miles, for a fraction of what they cost new and especially if you go for a manual. I've priced cats before, and the 8speed torqueflite cars are always more money. Although as far as racing goes, l most definitely prefer an auto because it's easy to miss gears when you're slamming em and have seen many people lose that way. Plus they shift so much quicker, and cannot miss either. They do make old school pistol grips for them as well as automatics, and are available at the mr. Norm's online store. I got one from them in my SRT8, but is for the autosticks and are pretty cool to. I had a 4-speed 68 Charger RT with added six pk in the late 90s, and once raced a Camaro SS 396 with turbo 400 and had it gapped. That is until I missed a gear with that damn long throw, and lost the race

mmmm... I don't know ... Few months ago I treaded my manual 2015 R/T Challenger (12K) for another manual 2016 Scatpack with all bells and whistles you named it! with a punchy HEMI SRT 6.4 under the hood and lower 3000 MILES on cluster for $34K, still smell as new ... Nice to have a mighty Hellcat BUT still to much for a regular car enthusiast nowadays. Hope this car finds a nice owner to take care of him.
