I don't know if the reason he gives is the real one. I always thought he left the Late Late Show because of a contract dispute or because the success of Old School went to his head and he thought he could do films.
But if he is in fact telling the truth, he's not wrong about the political/social commentary direction late night was going in. The Daily Show had already transformed into that once Stewart replaced him. And when Kilborn left CBS, it was during the Bush Presidency and a year and a half into the Iraq War and Letterman started to get a lot more political and it got even worse in the Obama and Trump eras with Colbert, Kimmel, and Meyers. So I can understand if he wanted nothing to do with that kind of talk show.

Killborn was by far my favorite talkshow hosts. I mean he was really in my cords of what I like as far as being charming, classy, deadpan humour. Had chemistry with his female guests without being creepy. No political crap. He was perfect. I would have made him the natural successor to Johnny. I was shocked when he left. And the reason for it is even more frustrating, he was bored. lol I guess all the good ones were too good, the networks had no choices but to replace them with the crumbs, a pletora of abomination like Kimmel, Colbert, Fallon, Meyers and that British guy.

Craig had a very peculiar, ironic sense of humor. You really had to "get" it, and if you didn't you weren't part of the club. Everything he did in which he acted like a narcissistic jerk was just an act. He was playing a character.
I can understand why that might not have gotten him great ratings because a lot of people didn't get it.

    • @victorkong82

Cole Steele the first host of The Late Late Show was Tom Snyder, but Craig Killborn was the first to bring comedy to the show. Snyder wasn’t funny and his version of the show was forgettable and boring most nights.
