Joe isn't afraid of debates, however that isn't what his show is for. His podcasts are more about enjoying a casual, informative conversation, and debates only happen when they arise organically. I love Ed, but Joe's podcast doesn't seem the right platform for him as it would most likely turn into a heated debate (which just isn't what Joe's podcast is for).
Bloody brilliantly. Well spoken, clear, articulate, thought-provoking, interesting, and convincing. This is the best response to hunting I’ve ever seen. Phenomenally well done.
Humans are natural predators, always have been. Unless that is humans are not natural to the environment. In the context of hunting, there are restrictions on how much you can kill. This makes Ed's first point null.
@@doctorscientist3991 we aren't predators, Humans are oportunistic animals, we would eat whatever we could find, it just happenned that we learned a way to effectively kill other beings, our bodys didn't evolve to exclusively hunt like lions or wolfs, if we did we wouldn't have any problem eating a live rat right now, or killing a pig with our own teeth I Know it can be annoying, all those vegans talking "non sense"... but try it out man, we weren't made for causing so much suffering, we are beings of love, and we should take care of this world and our earth brothers with our inteligence, thank you for reading and i hope you have a great day

I was vegan for 5 years, bought into it heavily, tracked nutrition and gripped the ideology with white knuckles. It brought me nothing but suffering in the end. At the end of the day it was me or veganism, one of us was losing.
@@doctorscientist3991 violence and territory defense isn't a predator trait, far from that, these instincts are found in pratically all of the animal kingdom. Something that we do have is a trait that only we can express, we are the only animals who are able to care about other species... we might hurt them, but we are still learning how to use this power, one day i believe we will have a beneficial symbiotic relationship with every living being on this planet, we have the potential for that :) I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with veganism, i hope maybe one day you can get back to it in a healthier way :)

What really cringes me out about hunters is after they have killed their target they sit by the animal and go on and on what a beautiful animal it is. Creepy af.
Webtex Web Design There's definitely some "I'm the alpha and on top of the food chain" bs going on and they get some form of thrill out of it. Some people also find hunters attractive. Like there are Instagram pages of "hot conservative girls" who show off guns/rifles and the game they killed with them. So for some hunters, it is sexual. Not all, but some. Big yikes.
I remember my own thought process when I made the decision to move to a vegan lifestyle. I had just sworn off factory farm derived products and I was still deciding if hunting or fishing my own meats was still on the table. I went back and forth with various arguments but kept landing on 2 questions that would not move. 1. Do I need to consume meat or fish to survive? No, there are vegans everywhere these days and have been around for years and they're both strong and healthy, just like anyone else. 2. Should I be a part of the life and death of an animal when I lead an existence far removed and insulated from the natural world where my own life is almost never at stake (or at the very least almost never under threat of being ended by a wild animal)? This was a question I had to answer for myself and I didn't like the idea of going out into the wild to go kill things to eat, especially given how I didn't need to. (so no, duh) Given those 2 answers, it was then the only logical conclusion that I attempt to embrace a vegan lifestyle. That day was about 2 months ago as of this moment and I feel like changing my diet and lifestyle has been a positive experience in almost every aspect. I feel healthier now than I have in years and I hope to stick with this change for the long run.
I'm not a vegan, or even a vegetarian, I have even hunted before. I found this interesting and thought provoking. Nothing Joe Rogan has ever said has made me say that. Well done.

I've almost let them wear me down back into eating meat but thanks to you, I have really been able to re-establish my view point on my ethics. much appreciated
There's a huge difference between people who live in the bush and hunt and people who live in the city who think meat comes from cellophane covered packages. It's hard to argue that these people don't live much closer to the hunter gatherers that we used to be.
Joe will agree with the last thing that he heard. He is a complete moron. If you beat him at a debate he will prolly have forgotten about it the next week.
He doesn't need to protect anything, he just uses some of his arguments because he can't be bothered just saying fuck off with your morals. Because no one has the right to dictate that shit when it comes to animals, unless they are tortured. Which we have seen being introduced over the last couple of decades or so. Hunting is done as always, just newer weapons have been introduced. Vegans have a hard time grasping this because you live in the bubble of what you have been told from a one dimensional view. And also, if you think any differently, well, you are not vegan.
Exactly, isn't that why it's so hard to change people? Animal industry has paid them off? Look at school cafeterías or ag gag laws to prevent filming in slaughter houses and farms.
Disagree. I do not like these arguments by Ed, and by Joe. They are both bad arguments. BUT this one is even worse. Joe has "F**k You" money. Joe regularly tells people to "F**k You".

He's pretty chill for a meathead, and I think he could eventually become vegan. I think it's possible. Maybe not likely, but possible.
@@thewhat531 I really REALLY doubt that is the case. Joe is open-minded for many things, he for sure understands that there is something extremely wrong with modern farming methods of meat & fish, he gets it. But from a dietary perspective he also gets it, he understands the thousands & thousands of years of human history/development eating Meat & Fish. Even ancient cave paintings depict men hunting animals with bow & arrow and spears. Ed conveniently neglects the fact native tribes of the Americas (North/South) African tribes, South East Asian Tribes and Inuit Tribes STILL hunt animals for food. THus proving that it is clearly in our human nature to do so. Also from the dietary perspective Veganism is a very new & very modern experiment. Hunting is the best thing that can happen to an ecosystem. Thanks to hunting regulations, natural territories are being preserved from deforestation and from the construction industry. It´s because of the money that hunters pay, those lands are being preserved.
I'm vegan and an ex-hunter and I can speak truth to Ed's claims. There often isn't a clean kill and there's a lot of suffering. I will never intentionally hurt another animal like that again.
Which hunting methods were you using? With a bow you really have to be on top of your game and practice intensely to be good enough to be an ethical hunter. Using a rifle, you have to absolutely suck at what you're doing, or just be an unethical hunter to cause harm for more than 30s-1min. If you don't have a clean shot, or you aren't confident, don't take the shot. Any harm you caused is on you.
As a child, I’d go along as an observer of the hunt with my dad. I would make noise and scare away the deer before he could shoot them. 😂 However, I still remember the ones he got and seeing them get butchered in front of me🙁
shut up. veganism is still trash because you can't build muscle on it without spending millions. until it overcomes that barrier, it's dog buns of the highest order
Killing a bear and getting a picture next to the body is psychopathic. I wonder if he believes his own lies that he’s helping the animals or if it’s just his excuse to make it “acceptable” to non hunters who have a heart.
psychopathic? I don't think you understand what that word means. And if you really believe, than I suppose you think anyone who's ever taken a picture of a nice medium rare steak or beautifully plated roll of sushi or just any meal in general that has meat it in...is a psychopath then?
Steve Chan no I don’t believe all meat eaters are psychopaths! Most of them couldn’t kill an animal themselves or even watch how their meat is made! I do however believe that trophy hunters are psychopaths which I understand to mean having no feelings and lacking of empathy. Killing these magnificent animals, smiling for a picture next to it’s dead body and taking a ‘trophy’ home is cold and evil behaviour.
caraleepaterson Agree. Because when it comes to people taking pictures with steak, there's most likely a strong sense of cognitive dissonance. That can't really be applied to hunters.
@@TheChillMelodist You definitely can't compare someone taking a picture of food on a plate to someone taking a picture of an animal while smiling that they just murdered... Yes, in a vegan point of view it's the same thing. But most people who follow an omnivorous diet do not have the same disgusting views towards torturing and murdering animals that hunters do. They still have the brainwashed ideas that their meat is somehow made humanely and is required for their health and wellbeing. Don't make that out to be the same. Psychopathic murderers and hunters have A LOT in common in how they self admire the horror they commit while having ZERO sense of guilt for the life of wild animals.

I am not supporting hunting but people who have never hunted do not understand the oneness and primal urges that are satisfied by it. There are other ways to interact with the environment and Wildlife that don't involve killing and are much more positive. Just saying.
My dad was a hunter, so I understand it, yet did not support it. It is better than factory farming, of course. But we are not starving, nor are we true predators. Our bodies are not designed teeth-wise or enzyme -wise, to consume flesh. And we cook it. We don't even eat the animal raw the way all other predators consume their prey. The biggest problem is that we are depriving all the predators of their meals, and that makes them come into cities and farms to find meat. Hunting and animal husbandry seriously disrupt the ecosystems. Forestry (for trees, in cash cropping fashion), is also part of the equation for destruction to ecosystems. (Fishing is of course, part of this problem, esp. the way it is done today.)
Often it's a result of tradition. My grandfather hunted a wide variety of animals and brought my dad with him as a kid. My dad grew up watching his father hunt and kill cougars, bears, deer etc and decided that lifestyle wasn't for him. Hunting was something that my grandfather did for fun and pleasure with his friends and family. As horrible as it sounds, it was for sport not survival.

I agree with Joe that (some) hunters have some kind of connection to their food, but certainly this is not a usual thing. Most of hunting is just a feeling of power and abuse. And even if you have a connection to your food; you can have that to some tomatoes that you plant in your garden as well.
Yeah those aren't hunters there sportsman. Hunters will almost freeze to death tracking locating trails spend day after day doing this doing everything he can to cover his scent and with a bow you have to get really close and not spook it just to get that one shot while the sportsman will sit in his little heated cabin with WiFi waiting for a deer that he will shoot with a rifle that's eating at a feeder that was placed in sight of the window in the cabin . Sports hunting should be illegal hunting on the other hand I can say first hand there's a lot of nights as a kid I wouldn't have gotten to eat if my dad wasn't a hunter

The following satirical editorial appeared in The Oakland Post (Michigan) on November 19, 1997. Boy: O Wise Hunter, how can I learn to respect animals and to respect life? Hunter: Buy a rifle and get a hunting license. Then hunt down the animals and kill them. Boy: And that will help me attain a respect for animals and for life? Hunter: Yes, of course it will, boy. Plus, if you go hunting with your father or your grandfather, then you can really bond with them. Boy: But couldn't I bond with them at a baseball game or at an amusement park? Hunter: I guess so. But then you couldn't kill anything. Boy: O Wise Hunter, what happens to some of the deer during the winter? Hunter: Well, some of the weak ones starve to death. And that's a very cruel way to die. So-instead-hunters shoot some deer, cut off their heads for trophies, dismember their bodies and eat their flesh in order to save them from the cruelties. Boy: But, uh, uh, how come hunters never shoot starving deer, only big healthy ones? Hunter: Uh, uh, uh, boy. Now you just keep quiet about that. Boy: And another thing, Wise One, if hunters were really concerned about starving animals, wouldn't they feed them? Hunter: Let me get this right, boy. You're saying that we should be feeding starving deer-instead of killing them? But... Boy: Is it true, Wise Hunter, that deer-car accidents have more than tripled over the past 30 years? Hunter: Well, uh, yeah. Boy: But I thought hunters killed deer in order to reduce the herd so deer-car accidents would decrease. Hunter: Well, uh, you sure ask a lot of questions, boy. Boy: O Wise Hunter, how come the Department of Natural Resources always promotes the killing of animals? Hunter: Well, just between you and me, the hunting community and the DNR are allies. You know, real good buddies. Boy: You mean most of the people who work for the DNR hunt? Hunter: Yes, of course, boy. And those fees from the hunting licenses-around 90 percent of that money goes toward the hiring of DNR officers and the marketing of programs to recruit young people, like yourself, into the hunting community. Boy: What about the commission that oversees the DNR in Michigan? Hunter: You mean the Natural Resources Commission? Boy: Yes, Wise Hunter. Hunter: Well, uh, eight of the nine commissioners 'live to hunt and hunt to live!' Boy: Ohhh. You mean, people who hunt make decisions about the fate of wild animals? Hunter: Now, now, boy. You just keep that bit of information to yourself. Boy: Would hunters ever try to conserve some of the land if they couldn't hunt on it? Hunter: Let me get this right, boy. You mean, we should just conserve some of the land and some of the animals that live on that land for the heck of it. With no killing. Uh, that would be a pretty kind gesture of humanity. Boy: I know, Wise Hunter, I know. Hunter: Well, uhhh... Boy: O Wise Hunter, how can I help advance the, uh, sport of hunting? Hunter: Tell people to have compassion for hunters. Boy: You mean tell people to have compassion for those who have no compassion? Hunter: Yes, boy. Boy: But, uh, wise hunter, these things you say make no sense. Hunter: I know, boy, I know. But if we say these things enough, the public will eventually believe us and then they will make sense. Boy: Ohhh! Activist Protests Deer Shoot

You make very good arguments against hunting animals but one issue regarding the reintroduction on predators into natural habitats for the purpose of managing overpopulation is the fact that given the current numbers of deer and other game, these predators will themselves become overpopulated due to the abundance of food. Therefore they will in turn cause an severe decline of deer population, then what happens is these huge numbers of predators such as wolves are inevitability forced to either die out( which a lot of them will), or find other food sources. We see this with bears, coyotes, large cats and other carnivorous predators leaving their natural habitat residential areas. This is already happening in multiple cities around the world where domestic dogs are being killed and eaten out of peoples back yards. Sooner or later they start hunting and killing children and even adults. And this is when all the good intentions and altruistic mindsets( which i am in no way trying to belittle or mock ) amount to nothing facing the sheer violence of nature. Remember the only reason we as a species have continued to survive and thrive is because we developed the tools and weapons to keep those predators from hunting us into extinction.
Even then those that were farming/gathering were just as essential for survival. The stories passed down were about the hunters. You don't hear many legendary stories about the squash harvest.
Important. I'm not sure about 'essential'. There were also tribal members who knew where to find edible roots and fruits and organised the annual movements, of the group, to be reliably successful. Meat would have been supplementary. We would not have been able to grow our population without the knowledge of more reliable food sources. You know - the stuff that couldn't run away or turn around and gore us to death. It was the gatherers that were the backbone of our evolution in the time when we didn't have a climate that was running as fast as an Auroch could.
@@dorianwaite5849 Oh, it still is. Organic chemistry is the backbone of pharmacology - modern and ancient. Just think how many of our modern medicines are derived from plant alkaloids. In the past - they probably didn't know about how carbon atoms attached other atoms but they learned the effects. We are basically still ape like creatures sampling leaves and berries! It horrifies me how much so called 'traditional medicine', in some parts of world, has honed in on animal derived substances. Ancient, should know better, cultures don't understand that it's the plants that have the chemistry. I think universities, in the far east, should make their organic chemistry courses free of charge. You get enough bright young people moving about, knowing that Tiger bone wine and Snake tea and Bear bile is nonsense - it might change things.
The missionary, David Livingstone, was attacked and mauled by a lion in Africa. He reported that he felt no pain and was in a calm and dreamy state during the attack. This is how prey animals will feel when attacked by natural predators - especially after a chase. Soldiers in battle often don't realise they are wounded until after the battle is over. This is not what will happen if a deer is shot without any prior 'fight or flight' stimulus.
Wow. What a sharp and comprehensive analysis. This was just the information-packed breakdown of hunting I was hoping for - I will likely rewatch this more than once to digest all the points you compiled, thanks for your fantastic work man
In my experience, hunters or people who advocate for hunting also eat farmed animals which completely nullifies their arguments. I'd be able to take hunters more seriously if they only consumed animal products that they've hunted themselves.

What really cringes me out about hunters is after they have killed their target they sit by the animal and go on and on what a beautiful animal it is. Creepy af.
Who TF hangs heads of dead animals they've killed on their WALL? Oh, that's right, hunters do. Creepy "trophies"
They’re really saying there catching hunting skills are beautiful,an extension of themselves
They're something sexual about it, it seems to me. I hope I'm wrong.
Big yikes.
Compared to vegans who enslaved animals, kill animals that try to eat their vegetables, fill the planet with chemicals.....
(so no, duh)
Given those 2 answers, it was then the only logical conclusion that I attempt to embrace a vegan lifestyle.
That day was about 2 months ago as of this moment and I feel like changing my diet and lifestyle has been a positive experience in almost every aspect. I feel healthier now than I have in years and I hope to stick with this change for the long run.

I really don't understand hunting culture and how this could possibly be "fun".
It's not about fun it's about survival
Often it's a result of tradition. My grandfather hunted a wide variety of animals and brought my dad with him as a kid. My dad grew up watching his father hunt and kill cougars, bears, deer etc and decided that lifestyle wasn't for him. Hunting was something that my grandfather did for fun and pleasure with his friends and family. As horrible as it sounds, it was for sport not survival.
it’s literally imbedded in our dna to hunt. its our natural instinct to hunt and our instinct has evolved to make it naturally fun for us. if you dont find it fun then you have been sheltered at a young age and would have been cut from the gene pool 100 years ago

I agree with Joe that (some) hunters have some kind of connection to their food, but certainly this is not a usual thing. Most of hunting is just a feeling of power and abuse. And even if you have a connection to your food; you can have that to some tomatoes that you plant in your garden as well.
Absolutely!! My homegrown veg patch sustains me physically and gives me joy.
No death

Hunter: Well, uh, eight of the nine commissioners 'live to hunt and hunt to live!'
Boy: Ohhh.
Boy: Ohhh!

Centuries ago: hunters were essential for survival and were respected.
Nowadays: causing extinction and seen as an unreasonable insanely cruel ppl.
@@batintheattic7293 Not just that but a huge amount of traditional medicine is about plants. Not just that of course but definitely a big part.
Thank you! It's a fundamentally obsolete practice in the developed world, like slavery and nomadic tribalism.
This is what makes Ed stand out from rest of the vegan activitists...
Not sure if I believe this 😅
