NOTE FROM MYRL: "I was continually supported by the efforts of a guy named Russ Burmester. That’s Dr. Russell Burmester, Princeton Ph.D. Russ was with me much of the time in the field, ran our lab, worked one-on-one with students, and told me when my ideas were full of sh&#! Without Russ I would be pretty much nowhere. And, of course, in later years Bernie Housen was of great assistance. But Russ was my main man."

And that's another worthwhile 45 minutes of my time. Thanks Nick for setting this up and adding another name of the previously unknown-to-me depth of knowledge in the PNW about where we came from. / Matt - Baja-BC adjacent on the 3 mile thick portion of the basalt (aka Pasco)

I was a student of Myrl's at WWU in his heyday. I learned alot from him. However, he could be a bit ornery. He liked to throw chalk at students who weren't paying attention. It's good to see him getting some recognition. Go Myrl.

I first became aware of Mt Stuart when I started college at CWU in 1967. Within just a few years it had become a central feature because of hiking near it and living in places I can get views of the range. I have a chunk of Stuart granite in my medicine bag.. I am looking forward to your Baha BC series this winter.

RAY WELLS is one of the children you need to interview. Dr. Beck certainly inferred it would be well worth the effort. And Nick, this engaging interview allowed us to see this modest man’s insightful genius through his own unscripted and plain spoken words. Nice job! So go find Ray Wells and get busy. Great interview; in fact an historic document. Really appreciate your conducting it and sharing it with us. I'm old enough to recall the emergence of plate tectonics when I was just beginning to become really interested in geography and earth science and the old ideas of synclines and antisynclines were so unsatisfying in contrast to the new ideas. These insights are a delight. Thanks again, Cheers.

Nick, is there anything that can be done to help Dr. Beck be invited into the NAS? He so richly deserves that honor, and I find it very irritating, indeed, that with his body of work he has not been tapped. His descriptions of the "Baja BC", paleomagnetism, et al, were so clearly stated that I understood it fully without having to listen twice, and I'm not a geologist!
Thank you, Nick, for yet another brilliant interview/lecture! We love you!

Yes! I was quite impressed with Dr. Myrl Beck's story and articulation. It's a rather sad story when historical significance of scientific expertise is not recognized. I wonder how Dr. Beck's work influenced Dr. Lisa Tauxe, (Geology, Geophysics) member of NAS since 2005.

That is one for the National Book of Treasures! Thank you so much, Nick and Meryl. Paleomagnetism has always been on of those aspects of geology that I believed, but didn’t know how to interpret how they were able to extract the actual magnetic history from a particular specimen or larger area of terrane. This helped so much!

Myrl was my main thesis advisor (and geophysics teacher) at Wester Washington when I sampled some Eocene volcanic rocks in the Republic graben (in eastern Washington State). I thought there was paleomagnetic evidence of clockwise rotation of some of the sampled rocks, which would fit with normal faulting with a component of right lateral strike slip that could have caused clockwise rotation of the rocks contained between the faults bordering the graben. I don't know if this is the prevailing view of what happened there, as I have not kept up on the tectonics of that area for around 40 years. Maybe I should ask Myrl about this.
Anyway, it was great to listen to this interview with Myrl! I enjoyed my time spent at Western Washington State College (now University) learning about paleomagnetism and plate tectonics from Myrl.

I remember reading in National Geographic about "continental drift" when I was in high school. In my ignorance it was easy to see it and say that it made sense. It's another level of intellectual courage to be trained in the accepted knowledge of a field and then take new data, which is contrary to that knowledge, form it into a new hypothesis and say "this makes sense".

Excellent interview. Myrl is articulate, humble but a real ferret on this complex trail.
BC is trisected north-south by major strike-slip fault systems 10 degrees and more long extending from south of the '49 into Yukon and Alaska. These are the Rocky Mtn trench system, Fraser fault (through the middle of the province) and the Pacific littoral; all which are active to some degree. They can provide evidence of both the northward movement and accommodating and perhaps stimulating the distral rotation in Washington and Oregon. The interesting loop in the Brooks Range (Alaska) has been investigated re Baja-BC motion. When the Brooks Range is straightened out, much of BC is returned south to its Baja paleomag-indicated formation position. So where did paleo Washington end-up on its northern trek? Northern Alaska, perhaps.
Work accomplished north of the '49 needs fuller integration into the Baja-BC theory. I think that many of the PacNW distral motion mysteries may have explanation in the punctuated or non-continuous movement north of exotic terranes through BC on the aforementioned major fault systems.

ps: as a BCer I wish that we had a Nick evolving the public from Creationists into Geo-sapients. Keep up the good work, Nick. A Canuk fan of your program.

Great interview! Did you see the new report out this week that deals not just with the strato volcanos of the west coast, but also integrates all the volcanic eruptive locations that have been identified and studied. Very interesting new information.

Valerie Henschel I don’t question your post - I’d like to read about it. Can you post a reference? Thanks!

Thanks for taking the opportunity to do this interview. What an engaging and sharp mind Myrl has.
I get an ironic chuckle to think the Sea of Cortez is expanding and present day Baja is on the move as we speak. Didn't A. Wegner get a similar reaction to similar concepts many years prior?

Watching a third time without chat up... focusing on the story. And got parts I missed before, good depth in the interview. South America interesting concept.

Rotation in sheer zones tend to relate to side of equator and direction of planet rotation?

Nick has recommended Dr Robert F. Butler's book, 'PALEOMAGNETISM: Magnetic Domains to Geologic Terranes', which Dr Butler has made available as a free e-book. It's at grad level, so don't expect an easy read. Makes one appreciate Professor Beck even more.
