2005 Acura TL: Still Worth It?

  • Review on the 2005 Acura TL and is this car actually worth it moving forward into 2020? I've owned the 2010 Acura TSX and this is my first time driving the Acura TL, I have not driven the 2009-2014 Acura TL either. I can say these Acuras age extremely well and they have a phenomenal driving characteristic that many new cars simply can't match. I particularly liked the 3.5l V6 engine which not only felt potent, but had nice linear power delivery due to the fact that it was naturally aspirated. The older Acura cars like this 2005 Acura TL always had great driving dynamics which were aided by the double wishbone front suspension set up, lacking in some new models today. Overall, the 2005 Acura TL and this whole 3rd generation is still worth taking a look at, especially since it is still one of the best looking four door sedans out.

      Hey thanks so much my friend, I’m humbled by your kind words and yes I think it’s important to look back a bit to get a better perspective of some of these new cars.

      @Exhaust Sports Auto no prob man. While I love new cars, I get bored with reviews on them because most of the time, 10 of the biggest reviewers are saying the same things about it. I drove a 2006 Acura TL as my work car back in the late 2000's, and when I left the company I asked them to sell me the car and I bought it. I still drive it to this day and I am getting ready to give it to my daughter who is learning to drive right now. It has 348,122 miles as of right now, and that car has been absolutely fantastic. Same engine. Same transmission. Pretty much everything else has been replaced at this point at around 300,000, but I think it could easy hit 500,000 miles if my daughter doesn't hit something else first. Here is hoping!

    I bought a ‘05 with the factory Dynamic package (6MT, Brembo brake kit, Navi, etc.) just last year to replace my old commuter car and have been loving it! Despite it’s few known issues, it has aged very well... most people don’t believe it’s a 15 year old car! Good looks, plenty of power, reliable, and great fuel economy for a V6 sedan (I’m still getting over 30MPG on the highway every day). My only wish is that it was RWD...

    I bought an '05 Nighthawk Black Pearl TL (over black int.) new from Ed Voyles in Atlanta in '06. Almost 15 yrs later I still don't find myself longing for anything newer as everytime I get in mine I find myself admiring it all over again. When I'm gassing up I end up walking around it in a wide circle while the tank fills, you know, "just checking that sh*t out." 😎 It's always been garaged and the finish still looks showroom. Now I've had various "life experiences" occur since I've owned it that have limited the amount of driving I've been able to do, such that I'm still at slightly less than 51,000 miles. (I know, blasphemer I must be to have driven no more!) That 51,000 (almost) does at least include two long round trips Atlanta- San Fran, different routes out and back each time, and this car on the open road is just a dream. (Yes I got a ticket just outside Amarillo.🙄) I look forward to many more years with mine since essentially it's barely broken in and since it does virtually everything I could ever need a car to do. I'm just so glad this is what I decided on nearly 15 yrs ago. It's not often a person spends a lot of money and still feels like they got a bargain.

    • @MeynMotorGroup
      @MeynMotorGroup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You did get a bargain my friend with that car. The fact that you still enjoy it is a huge testament and I enjoyed reading your ownership experience. Thank you sir for stopping by, phenomenal car!

    • @StevenBanks123

      Similar experience. Saved for years and bought an ‘04 TL for $38K. My first ever new car and yes, I too had life changes (a train route opened up!) so now, 17 years later, only 55K miles in the odometer. Mine is garaged as wellI, always synthetic oil, and too, do the walk-around and brush the paint with my fingertips, especially after I clay bar.
      And the thing moves! Love the VTEC when it kicks in.

      @@MeynMotorGroup i think why most new cars will never feel so planted like this TL is mostly the dam electric steering!. give me The hydraulic steering back ..worth the loss of "mpg" they claim

      @MeynMotorGroup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you like the steering in the TSX? I don’t mind some cars with the electric steering but I understand, nothing like hydraulic steering for sure. Very connected feel and yes it’s so dumb how they do it for “fuel economy” when it saves less than a tenth of a percent in fuel lol they just want to purposefully make cars feel to dull to promote self driving

I also like the 3 spoked steering wheel better which I believe was introduced in the 07 model. I'm a sucker for a good steering wheel, as it's what you interact with more than any part of your car.

    Hell yes it’s worth it!! Mine still looks, drives, and sounds like new. 203,000 miles. Best engine Honda has ever designed. PS. I use a different tire size and looks and performs better when it comes to driving performance. 255, 50 R17. Harder size to find but SOOOO worth it. I also have a fob with the key built in. Found them on eBay and work great. Just no memory seats but I don’t care. Looks awesome and so worth it. The dealership thought it was so cool cause they didn’t know if they would pair but did with no hesitation. Also, using manual part of the manumatic trans helps with gas mileage. Auto shifts a bit too high RPMs wise, which affects gas mileage. One more thing, tinted windows... hell yeah. Sub too!

      @@Darksyne that is awesome. Mine was the original trans. It had the 2 recall fixes done to it. The 3rd clutch pack was replaced with a better one and the extra transmission line was added. Unfortunately the previous owner never kept up on it like he said he did. Mine one day in the middle of driving had no gear. I turned off the ad for a minute and got a mile and did it again. Was another state away about to catch the ferry back. I managed it get it back home. I check the shift solenoids all good and screens were clean. I did a 3x3x3 trans fluid flush. Lucas trans fix. Changed out the pressure switches. Replaced torque converter because I found out a sound I had was torque converter shutter a mechanic missed. While taking out the trans i broke the connector for a shuft solenoid so replaced it. And it drove great for 5 miles. Shifted in every gear no problem. Then no gears. Got it back home and gave up. It would shift in every gear when it ran again. And when I sold it it made it to the guys place. He sold it and it is still on the road. No clue what they did. It could of been a clogged internal filter. The external one I replaced. You couldn't even blow through it. It was a solid car besides that. Just shows you what proper maintenance can do. Thankfully my current 08 TL Type S has been properly taken carbon and to the same acura dealer since it was bought new.

    I had a 2005 Acura TL 6 speed manual with the brembo brakes that i purchased in 2007 with 25k miles on the odometer.
    I am a spirited driver and all i can say is that in 12 years of ownership I only replaced the clutch once at 105k miles.
    When i sold it it had 220k miles and still going strong.
    I kept every maintenance receipt and i can tell you that in those 12 years i spent $8500. In stark comparison I held on to my CLS 63 AMG for another 3.5 years after the warranty ran out and spent 17k in maintenence costs.
    All my cars are garage kept and I I've always owed somethting fun and powerful on the side.
    Heres my point. Inside of those 12 years with the TL I also had a Aston Martin V8 vantage (manual), Camaro ZL1(manual), BMW M5 and M3 and a CLS 63 AMG.
    The TL was my daily for everything never had an issue never left me stranded anywhere. In fact all of the electronics and power windows sunroof and all that worked flawlessly.
    I cannot say the same for the cars on my list. Some were serious money pits. However I do not regret having the experience.
    Its not about rich or poor its about comon financial sense.
    Ive never been a brand whore. Ive always gone with what moved me at the time Style, Driving feel etc.
    December 2019 I said goodbye to the TL and purchased a 2018 GS 350 F-Sport certified pre owned with 26k on the odometer.
    As of today Nov 28 2023 the GS has 88,500 and running strong with no issues other than routine maintenance.
    Currently looking for another fun car to have next to the GS and thanks to your down to earth review of the LC 500 I believe I've made up my mind.
    I'll be holding on to the GS longer than I planned thanks to this review 😅

    I drive a 2007 TL Type-S. I probably bought the wrong car for what I do, but it's been so reliable that I don't even care that I have to feed it premium. I've put almost 100,000 kms on a previous TL over 3 years before I had a crash, and almost 40,000 km since Feb 2019 on my Type-S. Nothing ever went wrong. It's been as far south as Arizona, far north to Alaska and almost halfway across North America. I slap it with Nokian winter tires and brave the snow every year. It's comfortable, luxurious, decently quick, and I manage almost 750 kms on a tank of gas during my spontaneous road trips.
    I remember I almost bought a 2004 BMW 330i but decided to get the Acura instead. I don't know what other I would replace it with, other than maybe the upcoming TLX Type-S if it lives up to the hype. I absolutely love it.

      Hell no you didn’t buy the wrong car the Type S is a gem haha impossible to find in the used car market in my location in good condition at least.

    Kevin, an awesome review....as always. Sometimes I think the changes in the Auto industry can be sudden and at times so severe, that we forget how good the cars were. I test drove a similar car and was torn between Acura and Lexus, and in a good way. This Acura didn't remind me so much of the Accord, as other Acuras have. You are too young to remember, but the first Acura and Lexus didn't stand out. They blended in with the Camry's and Accord's just fine. It wasn't until you got the chance to sit inside of them or better yet, drive them, that you knew you were in something special. Thank you for reminding us of the great cars of the past. I do know that Acura/Accords had a transmission problem prior to this year and as a result, many diehard Acura fans left to go to Lexus. (However, it should be noted that Lexus is not immune to problems)
    Recently, Honda has had a problem with their CVT's and that bothers me. Since I'm older, I remember when Toyota or Honda were the best cars. (I remember Datsun but probably should stay quiet about the fact) If I should date myself, my first car was a Corolla with a vinyl roof (OK so I'm 50...LOL) My next car I bought used, was a ........are you ready? a Toyota Corona wagon. It lived to 200K miles.

    • @MeynMotorGroup
      @MeynMotorGroup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re a legend sir haha yea I want to try those even older models but unfortunately, they don’t exist in good condition around me haha 😂
      I really want to experience all of these cars very quickly because most “journalists” are like twice my age and they’ve lived through these generations, despite me not agreeing with any of them, they have driven many cars.
      Yea all cars have their issues that’s why you gotta go with a warranty or get a CPO like we discussed. I know a gentleman that bought a newer at the time model Corolla and the trans went out.
      I know another person with an SLK Benz running perfectly with over 100k Miles it’s all up to Lady Luck haha. Thanks again for your kind words

    I have owned a 2005 Acura TL that I have bought it from my parents at 72k miles. Owned it for three years and ended up with 148k miles with Zero problems. I have kept the car clean with no dents and curb rashes. However, I was worried about the high mileage, so I have decided to trade it in for a 2009 Infiniti g37s coupe with six speed manual. I have regretted that decision ever since because the Infiniti gave me nothing but trouble.
    Now I am trying to sell my Infiniti and willing to buy a low mileage six speed manual acura TL.
