Unfortunately the original vet I recommended has now closed / retired. He has recommended the following... Riada Vets in Ballymoney or Seamus McBride in Ballycastle
I'm really confused - these two vets are both in Northern Ireland - which isn't a part of the EU. Why haven't you suggested vets in the Republic of Ireland? I just want to make sure because I am about to head over to Ireland to get a pet passport and this video gave me the impression that it needs to be in the Republic of Ireland (EU) but upon searching these two vets, I realised they are both in Northern Ireland? I hope you can respond to my comment and help me understand.
@@robbieroams So it doesn't matter that they are not in the Republic area? Got it. Thank you very much for the video, you have no idea how helpful it has been. The only issue is, the one flight that is pet friendly and goes to Ireland is KLM and they are charging over 1k just for economy flights. I looked at a ferry but then it would take me hours to get to a ferry port from London and it simply isn't worth the stress (my dog gets super anxious travelling and I was trying to avoid any trip that will take more than 1-2 hours). FML. Haven't been on holiday for 3 years cause I don't want to leave my dog lol looks like I'm stuck here.
Northern Irish Vets can issue Pet Passports because Northern Ireland is technically still in the EU. This is because the Good Friday Agreement forbade a "hard border" between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This wasn't an issue at the time because both the Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland were EU members (and there was also the Common Travel Area that pre dated the EU by a very long time). Then came Brexit. EU Law requires there to be full Border Checks between it's territory and that of any non EU Country, but Good Friday Agreement (a treaty) forbids it. The solution? Put the border down the Irish Sea. There are supposed to be checks at Northern Irish Ports, but the UK Government and the Northern Ireland Assembly have suspended them indefinitely.
Great video, thorough and clear. I got a pet passport in Ballymena - and have travelled to France twice . All good. Remember your tapeworm treatment needed for re-entering UK must be given at least 24 hours before coming back. Thank you.
Can I go from London to Ireland without an animal health certificate? I want to take a ferry to Dublin but they haven't updated their information page and say you need all sorts of documents. I'm wondering if this still applies?
This my friend is a great video we are going to need the info you have if that’s ok . And thanks for making this kind of simple to understand I’ll see if I can get you on instagram and fire you a message
Thanks Robbie - good vid. We have been taking our dog regular to the EU since Brexit and as he has an EU pet passport has been great BUT be aware that with frequent travel the passport page for the tapeworm treatment is full requiring a new passport which is a costly pain. Just useful to be aware as UK control did not like the EU vet using an alternative page to log the last treatment and we were officially warned! Cheers M
I was hoping to use Causeway vets to obtain a pet passport for my two when i visit this summer, unfortunately the practice is closing in June, so will have to find another practice to get one

Thanks for this, it has clarified things for me as I am taking my two dogs, to Belgium soon. My own vets don't offer the AHC service, but the vet kindly told me of one who charges £90 and £30. I had asked at another local vet, their charges are £300 for the first dog then another £40 per additional dog. I will be bringing chocolates back for the vet :)

@robbieroams “Your Travelling with your Pet” video is so helpful and informative… the whole Pet Passport/AHC process is so confusing! We are travelling to Northern Ireland in a couple of weeks and would like, as you recommend, to book an appointment with a vet to get EU passports for our two dogs but I’m struggling to find a vet able to do this. As per previous comments on here the first Vet Practice recommended by you (Causeway Vets in Bushmills) has retired. The second one I tried, Riada Vets, Balleymoney (recommended on here) have stopped doing EU passports for anyone other than their own clients as they were inundated! Similar story at the third one Seamus McBride in Ballycastle. Just wondering if you or anyone else has any other suggestions? Many thanks.
Just wondering if the vet in Northern Ireland registered the passport with an England address? If so could I have the details please? We usually get an AHC but we are going to Norway and it’ll be so much easier with a passport

Hi Robbie. My wife and our dog Agertha are seriously thinking of travelling in the first instance to Northern Ireland before we travel to France then Spain for our daughters wedding in October of this year. Is it possible you could supply us with the details of the vet you visited in NI for the EU passport. Just found you today on utube and your vlog was informative. We have subscribed and will be looking at your travel guide books. 👍 Regards Dave, Nicki and Agertha🐶
Hi, could you please advise me of the details of the oet you used in Ireland? We are looking to visit Northern Ireland in September and would like to sort the pet passort while we are out there. Thanks Martin
Hi Robbie, a very interesting and informative video, thanks. We're heading to France in September for a month and were planning on getting an AHC for our 3 year old dog but are now thinking we will go down your suggested route. For background, our dog gets regular monthly worming treatments and is fully vaccinated with DHP, L4, KC but has never been abroad before nor had a rabies vaccination. I think I am clear on the process but would you mind just confirming my understanding so we don't have a wasted trip; 1. We can travel with our dog directly to NI without an AHC or any further treatments other than those he already has. 2. A vet in NI can vaccinate my dog with an EU/NI issue rabies vaccination, and after checking his microchip and worming, can issue us with a pet passport. There is no minimum time between arriving in NI and visiting the vet. 3. Once we have the PP we can travel immediately back to the UK Mainland but would need to wait at least 21 days after the rabies vaccination before travelling to France. Thanks in advance for your help Robbie!
Do the 5 pets need to belong to the same owner on the animal health certificate ? or can it be multiple owners traveling together with up to 5 pets covered under 1 animal health certificate ?
So if i have understood this correctly if I'm travelling from Scotland to Northern Ireland we do not require a pet passport or any documentation or any treatments to do so?
Can anyone answer a question about insurance for pets going to non-EU countries? I can't find a policy that covers animals going to non-EU countries which are PETS licensed, such as Switzerland. They all seem to be restricted to EU members.
Hi, We’re driving from the U.K. through to Italy then Greece to Cyprus… with the health certificate having the 10 day rule, does this mean we need to get to Cyprus in 10 days? Thanks
Very informative. Im planning on driving from the UK to Athens and was planning to go via Serbia but have recently been told that it may be more difficult going through Serbia?
So if you have your rabies vaccine in Ireland but the EU Passport requires the rabies from a EU country? So basically you'd have to get the rabies shots again? Also, in EU is it 1,3 or year rabies shots they accept? In Canada the Animal Health Certificate is only like $60, in Mexico it's only $20, USA only $50 as well. Crazy how expensive it is in Ireland! Also, if your dog has a microchip from Canada or USA but now they need the EU microchip does that mean they have 2 microchips or one gets removed...so confusing haha.
Thanks Robbie. The clearest video I’ve seen on this subject. The dogs will appreciate it. Ireland here we come me thinks!! As soon as the guide book comes out!! You should maybe think about doing a video of all the other Brexit advantages we’ve got …….oh hang on😂
Hi Robbie, many thanks for making this easy guide, can I please confirm if this is still valid, if you travel direct to NI with your dogs from England then into the ROI you don’t need any certificate/ vaccinations for your dogs? Many thanks
Great video and loving the Toad Trip Ireland book which I bought last week! Please can you send me the details of the Northern Ireland vet who provided your EU pet passports - many thanks
Could you tell me the name of the vet in Northern Ireland that does the EU Passport please? Thank you for the info. We used the Animal health certificate last year for our dog Harris when we took him to France.
Hi Robbie, just booked our ferry & ordered your book, can’t wait for our trip 😆. We are sailing Cairnryan to Belfast, 10 nights then back. Hoping to get our dog a pet passport & rabies jab whilst in NI. He currently has no jabs, no existing AHC or any official recorded tapeworm treatment. Whilst I understand the border checks into ROI are ambiguous, much of the information documented on the internet implies spot checks can be carried out and severe penalties can be issued, if caught. I’m really concerned our trip may need to be restricted to NI alone because of this 😢 Have you any information about this? Thanks
There are no borders and I’ve not heard of any on the spot checks actually being imposed - I wouldn’t even imagine who would carry these out. You need not worry and if you do get the pet passport in NI then you’ll be good to go anywhere in Europe 👍

Confused. As N Ireland is part of the UK, how is a vet able to give out an EU pet passport? Thought you would have to go to Republic. Please make me understand process. Cheers.
Because of the NI protocol. Like somebody from NI can have an Irish Passport or British Passport. It's just one of them unusual loop holes but it's legit and works :)
Thank you for this. Can you give me the name of the NI vet please. Also did you then travel from NI to Europe or did you get your EU Pet Passport in NI, return to England and got a ferry from mainland UK to Europe? The reason I ask, is that I'm wondering if you got EU Passport in NI and sailed from there to Europe, technically within Europe or can one legally travel with E PP from mainland UK to Europe? Sorry, so many and thank you. Sarah
Hi I am living in London but when I move in here I got for my dog the EU passport, now we want to go on holidays to EU but my vet said that I need the certificate and is very expensive, but if I already have the EU passport can I used that? My vet here in London can put in that passport the vaccine information etc???
Hey, thanks for all the information provided. I have one question, does the rabies vaccine has to be apply by a EU vet? or it can be a UK vet as well on the EU passport?
On very first informations some sources said something about blood test before travel to confirm rabies vaccine work fine. Is it still needed? By the way, you made very good and useful video!
Great video! Exactly what I was needed. I just one question about it. After Obtaining a pet EU passports do you still need to get an Animal Health Certificate for your dogs everytime you go to Europe and return? I will obtain a pet EU passport for my dog next time I go visit my mum in Portugal.
Our dog hadn’t had a rabies would she need one before a passport was issued? Also which ferry did you use for the trip from UK please. Very informative video thank you
Hi Lynne, when you obtain an EU Pet Passport you will have to get a rabies vaccine at the same time. The rabies vaccine in the EU or Northern Ireland has an EU batch number that must be used in an EU pet passport. So you couldn't get a rabies vaccine from a UK vet and use it in the EU pet passport. I've used the Irish Ferries from Dublin to Holyhead, however, to go direct to Ireland you'll need an Animal Health Certificate or EU Pet Passport. If you go direct to Northern Ireland you won't need any documentation. Very messy isn't it haha.
If her rabies vaccine is still valid then yes 👍 The rabies are usually valid for 3 years, to keep the passport valid you’ll need to ensure the boosters are done in Northern Ireland or another EU country 👍
Hi Robbie great video bud we've a 14 year old westie, he's not had any booster shots annual ones for 5 plus years. Does the trip to Northern Ireland 🇮🇪 still count to get the EU passport even if he's not had booster shots??
Hi Kevin, If you travel direct to Northern Ireland your Westie won’t need any shots or paperwork. When you visit the vets there they’ll give your westie a fresh rabbies shot and register it in the new EU Pet Passport that you’ll get. I used Causeway Vets in Bushmills 👍 Northern Ireland is a great place to start or end a road trip in so you can book in at the vets whenever before you go home 😀
@@robbieroams Im still trying to get thru to that particular one BUT all the others i have called tell me the same story its ONLY for residents and that is the rule with EVERY practice 🤷🏽♀️ Have you heard this before pal?

Hi Robbie Would the vets in Ireland send an EU pet passport to us in Wales without us going there? Then would I be able to get my dog a rabies jab locally in Wales. He is already microchipped so these details could then be entered by the vets in Wales on the passport. Do you think this would be possible
Ahhh, so I have a pet passport issued in France from when we lived there but I can't use it then because it needs an EU batch number......they get you every way...!!!!!

Yes it’s Causeway Vets in Bushmills 😀
Can I please have the NI Vets details.
It’s Causeway Vets in NI
so what about blood test sample if its ur dogs first rabies vaccine for travel ? or is it a total scam ?
I'd love the details of the NI vet please
Causeway Vets in Bushmills :)
Hi there! I would love to get the contact of your vet in Ireland please!!
Hi it’s Causeway Vets in Bushmills ☺️
When you say return back to the uk, by what means do you mean. I’m not going to use airplane hold for example
When you come back into the UK from Europe 👍
Thank you for this. Can you give me the name of the NI vet please. Also did you then travel from NI to Europe or did you get your EU Pet Passport in NI, return to England and got a ferry from mainland UK to Europe? The reason I ask, is that I'm wondering if you got EU Passport in NI and sailed from there to Europe, technically within Europe or can one legally travel with E PP from mainland UK to Europe? Sorry, so many and thank you. Sarah
With the EU pet passport you can travel from mainland UK to Europe no problem. It’s Causeway Vets in Bushmills 👍
@@robbieroams thank you so so very much! Sarah
Hi I am living in London but when I move in here I got for my dog the EU passport, now we want to go on holidays to EU but my vet said that I need the certificate and is very expensive, but if I already have the EU passport can I used that? My vet here in London can put in that passport the vaccine information etc???
If you already have the EU pet passport and it’s less than 3 years old with the EU rabies vaccine listed then you will be fine.
If you enter and leave Ireland via Belfast, after travelling through Republic of Ireland what paper work do you require, if any?
You don’t require any - there are no borders or checks.
Hi Robbie, thanks for the video. Can I get the EU passport from the NI vet on the same day of the vaccination please?
Yes absolutely 👍
Hey, thanks for all the information provided. I have one question, does the rabies vaccine has to be apply by a EU vet? or it can be a UK vet as well on the EU passport?
It has be an EU vaccine with an EU batch number
Thanks, thankfully I took that decision a week ago before coming back to the UK
On very first informations some sources said something about blood test before travel to confirm rabies vaccine work fine. Is it still needed?
By the way, you made very good and useful video!
I've noticed that too and I'm not sure
Great video! Exactly what I was needed. I just one question about it. After Obtaining a pet EU passports do you still need to get an Animal Health Certificate for your dogs everytime you go to Europe and return?
I will obtain a pet EU passport for my dog next time I go visit my mum in Portugal.
No the pet passport replaces any need for an AHC 👍
Robbie, our dog came over from Cyprus in Dec 2021. She came with a passport, is this valid as an EU passport do you know?
If her rabies vaccine is still valid then yes 👍 The rabies are usually valid for 3 years, to keep the passport valid you’ll need to ensure the boosters are done in Northern Ireland or another EU country 👍
I have a pet passport nor my dog from 4 years ago will this still be valid?
Yes but you need a rabies top up every 3 years :)
@@robbieroams thank you for the fast reply
Hi Robbie great video bud we've a 14 year old westie, he's not had any booster shots annual ones for 5 plus years. Does the trip to Northern Ireland 🇮🇪 still count to get the EU passport even if he's not had booster shots??
Hi Kevin,
If you travel direct to Northern Ireland your Westie won’t need any shots or paperwork.
Robbie Ive Just called several Vets in NI
And ALL of them tell me this is Only open to residents 🤷🏽♀️😭
Have you tried Causeway vets in Bushmills?
@@robbieroams Im still trying to get thru to that particular one BUT all the others i have called tell me the same story its ONLY for residents and that is the rule with EVERY practice 🤷🏽♀️ Have you heard this before pal?
@HellNwheels please share if you find a vets as I took I'm finding it hard to get one, unfortunately the vet that Robbie recommended is retiring and the practice is closing down in June
@@HellNwheelsDid you have any luck finding a vet in NI?
@@jamesgammage7394 NO 😔 ALL of them insisted it is only available to Residents
Hi Robbie
Would the vets in Ireland send an EU pet passport to us in Wales without us going there? Then would I be able to get my dog a rabies jab locally in Wales. He is already microchipped so these details could then be entered by the vets in Wales on the passport.
Do you think this would be possible
Unfortunately not - the rabies vaccine has to have an EU batch number which UK vets don’t have access too. Vets in NI do have access to these.
Ahhh, so I have a pet passport issued in France from when we lived there but I can't use it then because it needs an EU batch number......they get you every way...!!!!!
Thank you, I needed to hear this as I was heading to NI this summer but read the website & said you need it all.. can you please send the Irish vet details I will get my border collie a EU pet passport there..
Yes it’s Causeway Vets in Bushmills 😀
Saying getting the animal certificate is expensive at £100 then selling an option of going to northern Ireland to get an EU passport instead which is surely more expensive is a bit weird? Unless you’re planning on going to NI anyway
My main point is that if you’re heading to ROI where an AHC is needed you’d be better off going to NI 👍
