  • Am so sorry most beginners aren't going to find Houdini too friendly in terms of pricing, use case scenario, and tutorials. in this video, I place side fx Houdini fx, against Houdini apprentice, Houdini core, and Houdini indie. I've always thought of when I was going to drop a Houdini video, and finally, we did it. I personally think Houdini is great for everyone but side fx main target isn't the upcoming 3d artist, no, they are all about the money they can milk from the big firms.
In this video, I'm sharing with you the latest version of SideFX Houdini, the free simulation software that allows you to create stunning visual effects. If you're looking to learn how to create visual effects in Houdini, then this is the video for you!

I picked up Houdini this past March and spent 6 months working with it as a hobbyist. I quickly switched from Apprentice to Indie when I had monthly licensing issues. Yes, license issues with the free version. The only other 3D software I've used is ZBrush. Wow, even with the little understanding I have, I constantly get ideas now that start with "I could always do that easier in Houdini by..."
It seems their huge push these days is about connecting to Unreal5. Yet even in the past 6 months things have changed so much. For example Gear Solid mentions the renderer Mantra. But even now they are pushing to switch to Karma, the renderer for USD pipeline which can use CPU & GPU together for rendering.
A big part of Houdini that doesn't get mentioned is their modelling support through Houdini Labs, which comes out with new free addons built into the software to let you build try new workflows. Greeble/nurny, trees and buildings, remeshing etc. Always to make it easier for non-coders. One thing that never gets old is making your own network of nodes, wrapping it into an asset and then changing the seed to see a completely different output (not just for simulations but also for modelling).
    You're the best, Gear Solid!

@@articraftic No, Houdini Indie isn't free. You are right.
Even when using Apprentice (free), I had licensing issues that I didn't expect. When I switched to Indie (paid), the issues went away. It is a while ago, but it might have been reminders or some similar hassle requiring attention.

All your reviews are based on personal experience and not just some random research. You've really helped me a lot. Do you have some pdf files on 2d animation I can study when am less busy. Am into 3d but I just want to have a glimpse on how 2d works

Are you kidding me? I saw the raw video at the end of the video. This is some heavy processed video. How do you achieve that? What editing software do you use? Damn!!!

Maybe it is a LUT. But yes, I took it for granted that Gear Solid's video's look *perfect*.

Yeaa, I always have to pull down the highlights and double highlights using magic bullet colorister plugin for premier pro.
My videos looks worst because I record mostly using my smartphone. So I always have to retouch a bit at post. Doesn't look too well but I would get a real camera soon.

I write all my points and a few important notes I might forget on a laptop. So I place the laptop below the camera so I can read those notes when I get to those points.
