Did you get it? Easy Right? Maybe you have to watch it again! Thats okay! What do you want to learn next? Let me know down below, don't forget to like and subscribe too!
Hi, I'm learning a lot, and also i fix my falses on the flute becouse of your lessons, i just need subtitles in your videos to understand better, it will be easier to understand what excatly you tell or if it is possible Turkish translation it would be perfect...
I'm sorry. I can't understand where the left foot should be aligned with. It sounded like "stand"? or stem? can you write it here, please? I am a beginner.
Thank you. Very helpful. I played flute for approximately 6 years. Stopped when I graduated high school. Now taking it it up again after 53 years. I never had any private lessons. I'm trying to get all the basics right as I relearn how to play.
I am coming back to my flute playing after 20 years absence. (I had children and raised them). Your videos are extremely helpful in reminding me of so many things. Thank you so much for your teaching and professionalism!
I must have had good teachers many years ago, as I apparently have the correct posture outlined in this video. I never gave it much thought. This video is right on! Very good and proper instruction.
I’ve been sitting “crooked” like that for a long time without knowing why. People always say “sit straight!” But now I know that it’s not about that. Thanks!
Im so glad I could help make it clear! : ) Thanks so much for watching Yasmin, let me know whenever you have a question and tell all your other flute friends about us! The more the better!
As a very new player, these tips just improved my tone substantially. I was already working for that 45 degree angle, but fighting myself to do so. Repositioning my entire body changed the game. Thank you!
This is great! I definitely could have used your tips several years ago. My teachers didn’t really correct me, or focus on this. It wasn’t until college that my teacher began to point things out to me that I had no idea I was doing. To this day, I’m still undoing bad habits I’ve developed over time. Trying harder to think consciously about posture, but sometimes I get distracted with focusing on that and losing my focus on what I’m playing and vice versa. I am grateful when teachers correct me with these things-always a learning experience. Great video!
Hi Robin! Your not the only one! But its easy to correct with a little practice and checking in on it once in a while. Happy practicing and hope to hear from you again!
The Flute Channel Hi Amelie! Thank you! I thought of a question: I am re-teaching myself (30 mins a day) using the Rubank Elementary Methods to build back foundational skills. However, I think I should focus more strictly on re-learning scales/arpeggios. I can play low c to 3rd octave c ( working on tone). What book do you recommend? I’m sure you’ve mentioned it before but please remind me! I hope your book comes out soon!😁
My Trevor Wye Practice Book for the flute came today!! I looked back and this was recommended by you and several flute vloggers! I’m very excited! It looks like it has so many awesome exercises.
Trevor wye is packed to the brim with a lot of stuff and it can be overwhelming. If your looking for scales or simple exercises try Reichert imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/182079/pndp or Taffanel ( father of the flute ) Daily Exercises imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/397898/pndp ALL FREE as well. IF you have problems do let me know
The Flute Channel thank you so much! Yes the book is a lot, I’m taking it one book and one page at a time...even if I practice it all week (working in technique now). thank you for those resources!! This channel is really helping me improve and stay motivated!
Such a great video, I have a old flute from the brand “Meinl”, I need repair it but I can still studying the sound in every scale. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Thank you very much! Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo très informative ! Body posture is something I haven't learnt consciously at all. I think I do most of your recommendations automatically, but it's still good to have the details pointed out. Thanks again! :)
Thank you so much. Merci beaucoup! I am a pianist who is self-learning flute and your guidance on posture is exactly what I needed. I felt immediately the relieve in my right arm with your directions for posture. Thank you! I appreciate your videos.
Your very welcome Louis! Im glad I could help, always feel free to ask questions or requests anytime. We also do a live-stream every week ( at least we try ) Soon will also start a slack for digital lessons!
Thanks for the video. I started playing the flute yesterday and I wasn't staggering my posture. This caused my left arm to feel tingly and like the blood circulation was cut off.
Thank you! I struggle a lot with anxiety when I'm playing in front of a crowd, and feeling stiffer when playing does not help that! I think practicing the right posture will help me loosen up my upper body a lot, and maybe that will help me feel more comfortable with my own breath when I do start getting anxious. :) Do any other flute players struggle with this? Feeling anxious makes it very hard for me to get in a good deep breath!
I love your videos. I just got my first flute! It's a Gemeinhardt 2SP for $50 from an auction. I'm 32 and this will be the first musical instrument that i'll be learning to play. I also need to learn to read music haha. Good combination. Wish me luck :) There's a band called Mulebone with a couple of nice guys ... one of them is also a flutist. He inspires me!
Congrats Elena! Will actually be starting a music reading video and book series soon. So please stay tuned-for that. So excited for you, have fun playing and practicing! Talk soon
Oh, wow! This is me too - down to the same flute that you purchased. I am 60+ years old, and I do read music (play the piano), but I ALWAYS wanted to learn to play the flute. And now Im going to! This TH-cam channel is amazing.
This is similar to the violin, i.e., the instrument will never bend to accommodate us. We must find the best way to make our bodies comfortably accommodate the instrument to play beautifully.
Great video, as with all of them on your channel. Good advice, too! I was wondering what should be a daily limit to play flute? I enjoy playing the flute, but sometimes feel a sore lower back the next day.
1-2 is more than enough for the brain and body to take. Unless you have projects and deadlines then add ass necessary. But give your body and mind time to rest. take short breaks every hour of playing. hope thanks helps and thanks for watching!
Thanks so much, it was so useful for me! But I have a question... I always get pain in my left index finger, even just playing a few minutes... could you recommend me some video or some info for fix it? Thanks so much for your videos ;)
Aww my pleasure Im happy you enjoyed the video. Hmmm You cold be pressing hard on the side of your index and this could be causing your pain. I would look into "flute gels" you can find them at fluteworld.com these would give you a softer area for your finger to rest on. But let me keep thinking about it. I might message you back again. Talk soon.

Thanks so much, I hope I will fix it to allow me enjoy nicelly my flute!
If you really are pressing too hard, creating a softer area may only help that much. The real solution is to not press, which is easier said than done of course! What seems to help me if I get this kind of issues is to play something easy on the finger such as long tones so that I'm not distracted by having to move them and pay full attention to not pressing harder than necessary to close the keys and keep the instrument stable.
I'm just starting out with the flute, and I've been getting back pain on my left side up to my neck. I think this is due to posture pointing forward instead of angled properly. Also, I'm so excited about playing that I jumped into practicing a lot and am using muscles that I usually don't engage.
ease into it for sure. start with 45 minute sessions if your doing alot with 15 minute breaks ie: get up walk around, take a glass of water etc. you body will thank you for that.
Thank you very much Amélie! Right hand became an issue when I changed my Trevor for a Yamaha, because the Yamaha's body is thinner, hence, causing my thumb to pop out in front. My new teacher tried to correct the posture at distance, but it is quite hard. I think I have the same short pinky as yours, but a long thumb... hard to decide where to put it. My hand became completly twisted and I really feel pain on the muscle of my right thumb and sometimes in my wrist... so, I really do not know how to correct this new "wrong" right hand position... Any extra tips to find our correct right hand position?
Thank you for the tip. I've been feeling pressure on my lower front teeth after practice especially since I started working on high notes. What should I do? I need help.
Hello, Amelie. my name is Toshino Tahara from Japan. About posture, figure of ALTES shows us most beautiful posture. I think a lot of flutist saw that figure. But nowadays open stance style is popular than close stance I think. I also think close stance is beautiful. What do you think about it? Excuse me for writing in haste.
No problem. Will actually be making a new video about this as a lot has changed in terms of posture. The flute wasn't built full balanced and that causes problems on how we hold it. which also causes injuries for some. There are now new movements that we can add to our playing posture to make things sound better and more comfortable for the player. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Dear, I play Indian Bamboo flute which is called ( Bansuri ). I want to experience the joy of playing a Silver flute. Can you suggest a good flute for me ? It will be better if you can give any link to buy them online. I usually play G# and E scale in Bamboo flute.
Yes of course! Yamaha (models in the 200 range) flutes are great starters as well as powell sonare flutes. You can find them on Ebay or music shops in your area.
he's great! But mind you he also plays with both feet on the ground as well as on one foot. Flutist have to find their own particular way of playing that is comfortable and won't cause injury over time.
Did you get it? Easy Right? Maybe you have to watch it again! Thats okay! What do you want to learn next? Let me know down below, don't forget to like and subscribe too!

Happy to hear that!
Thanks for this Fundamentals. .Feels vey natural to play at a 45 degree angle. I think I'm of to a good start with the flute.

Thanks for your tips! I was in band from 6th to 12th grade and I did not learn great posture 😬 we weren’t taught this way to stand/sit. I’ll practice!

he's great! But mind you he also plays with both feet on the ground as well as on one foot. Flutist have to find their own particular way of playing that is comfortable and won't cause injury over time.
How do I play Christmas music?
I actually own a Yamaha flute so I guess the Yamaha 222
By the way where are you from ?
Im from Canada!
My back hurts a lot after an hour practicing....
you should definitely take frequent breaks. That may relieve your pain.
