This was my first contact with Dead can Dance. I was 18 years old, on deck of a night ferry to Dover. A classmate gave me his walkman to listen to "Cantara" and I dived into this dark music watching the black ocean.
I will never forget this. Still my favourite DCD track.
Thank you Dana for this lovely video.

The most unique, and talented band in the world. No one, NO ONE, can sing with the passion that Lisa does. Hundreds of years from now, Dead Can Dance will be regarded as we now regard the likes of Beethoven and Bach.

In my mind, if raves existed back in the days of the Roman Empire, this is the kind of music to which they would have danced about like mad people! It's so rousing and dramatic, I just can't sit still listening to this, I have to move with it. I find it as motivating as 90's house music when it comes to stoking up the wild man inside me! :-D

The live version on "Toward The Within" is the most primal man-made thing I have ever heard. Lisa, in the last minute and a half, takes what you heard here and reaches for a place so deep that her voice bends off into what I can only describe as Kundalini serpent places. A place inside her where the lyric on the studio version just cannot go without writhing if it is expected to mark us.
And mark us it does, all of us, as you will hear in the audience, you right there alongside them.

There's nothing really dark to this song. The Middle-Eastern influences are so hard to ignore that all you get is a sort of Moorish-slash-Gypsy need to get up and dance, once Lisa Gerrard gets her windpipe going! It's incredibly lively.
Maybe it's just me, but I never entirely got the Goth/Dead Can Dance connection. Some songs are dark, sure, but this one is just so passionate it's hard to find some kind of turgid undertone to it.

Great video and song choice! I had borrowed my grandpa's car to go for a job interview back in the mid 80's, when I returned back to his house I came in the front door and noticed my Grandma lying on the couch,so I started to whisper "Thanks Grandpa" and he said "you don't need to whisper, Grandma's passed not sleeping." I was shocked at his gentleness. He actually took a few pictures of her with his poloraoid..it was so sweet..I'm glad I was there...she took a nap and never woke up...

The Carnival is Over.
Tombs, a cemetery, desperate faces, statues frozen in affliction, mystical masks, dead trees, wilted withered flowers, tears and skeletons.
The whole panoply of clichés that has accompanied Dead Can Dance since their creation. In the 80s of the last century, I was not spared these stupid thoughts either. But it was thirty-five years ago and since then, water has flowed under the bridge.
Did you ever listened to the DCDs? I mean, really listened?
Their music is undeniably a hymn to beauty. The very essence with which they composed their songs was beauty. Not death, despair and grief. It was beauty. It was the joy of living, the colors, the multiplicity, the love.
Mysticism, that doesn't mean Dark, Dark Wave, burial and descent into a vault...
It means elevation, illumination, light, life, colors and joy.
I can no longer admit that the symbols are reversed and that they are affixed to artists against their intentions. Our inner world and its projection on these artists have nothing to do with their work. It is not the reality. The Carnival is Over.

Many of the comments below say this song has nothing to do with death and sadness but makes them feel a kind of freedom.
For me, sadness is just one face of death. One in a hundred.
I lost my beloved mother-in-law this summer. I truly felt the word "mother" in this expression. We had a very honest and loving relationship.
She passed away in our little family circle and I can't stop being thankful to God, for being able to stay with her and support her from the beginning of the end.
Her last breath felt like the last one of mine. As I saw the glow fading away in her eyes, I had the feeling that it fades to the inside. There was no fading "out".
In the following days, we had tons of concrete in our hearts.
However I'm still unable to say a final goodbye to her, in a strange kind of way I don't feel like having to do so.
What I feel is that she's safe and she's free. She's in a place that we earthbound creatures cannot imagine yet.
So guys, I guess this freedom is the something we have in common.

coop island Goths adopted DCD somewhere in the 90s. Don't even really know how that happened since DCD is "World Music".

youtube invites or even forces the need of pictures (stills or movies) on us.
This music can exist purely without that.
If you want the music as closest to yourself as possible - close your eyes.
Forget the world of comments, PCs, egos and the desperate foolish need to be right.
You will find that as soon as you open them again. 24/7 and all around you.

This totally makes me think of ancient ruined temples and haunted rainforests. There's a mystic quality to it that's just indescribable. The only part I hate is when it ends. :(

It amazes me how many different "voices" Lisa Gerrard is capable of doing--all the way from Western to Middle Eastern, to this, which sounds rather Bollywood.

Just relax, close your eyes, forget the video and let the music take you to your place (happy, sad... what ever). No need to make a major thing of it. I am sure that if they put up something else on the screen people would be arguing about that as well. Just let the music carry you away...........🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Very good, ideal for a sci-fi movie.
