    Update: on the Speaker Leaderboard, I meant to place the Debut Reference above the SVS Ultra in the Bookshelf category as well. I was so focused on whether it could beat the UB5, I didn't consider if it was above or below the SVS Ultra. I've made the change accordingly.

    As always, great review, Joe!
    Also, I wanted to thank you for the heads up on Just Audio's giveaway as I am the contest's winner for the Debut Reference speakers! I plan on using them as my desktop speakers for music and gaming (large desk at 84 5/8" length and nearly 3' in depth) with a Denon PMA-600ne stereo amp. Pretty excited and shell-shocked as I've never won anything before!
    I originally planned on giving them to my parents as an early anniversary gift for a 2.1 system if I won, but they refuse to take the speakers from me, apparently.

    Nicely done Joe. I was actually waiting for a pair to review but after watching this video, I don't know if I have anything more to add. As such I just sent them an email to send me the tower version instead. Well done Joe.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnsweda2999 Yeah and I know some other channels will be coming out with reviews of these speakers too. I am curious what else more can they add as I thought this review was pretty complete. What would be cool is if I still had all the popular stand mount speakers and I do an ABCDE comparison. Sadly I don't have them anymore.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your place looks well suited for floorstanders so that will be good. I've noticed a lot of variation between bookshelf speakers and floorstanders from the same line. Although they should theoretically sound similar just with slightly more sensitivity and more low frequency extension, it doesn't always play out that way in real world scenarios. For example, the ELAC Debut Reference floorstanders have the slot port at the very bottom near the floor (whereas it would be off the ground if placed on stands) and it also has 2 more cylindrical ports in the back. I just noticed those are also using 5.25" drivers instead of the 6.5" on the bookshelf.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@joentell Yeah and also it is harder to integrate multiple drivers with floor standing. As such you are right that it is just more than extension. I personally like floorstanders more maybe because I have the room for it. Regardless which one I get, I am sure they will sound great but what I am expecting is that unlike the debut 6.2, they will not blow me away because these days,budget speakers sounding great is an expectation. Hopefully I am wrong and they will blow me away.

      @@joentell I like Elac's approach to continuous improvement of the Debut line of speakers. I hope that we see a similar approach soon with the Uni-Fi line, particularly a step up in that pesky sensitivity/impedance rating. Seems to be price room somewhere between the Debut Ref and the Carina lines.

But with the Adante AS-61 line being on close out at twice the price, would you jump over the Debut line and grab the AS -61? Hi Joe! I have a couple questions. You mention that the DBR62’s do better with higher end equipment. Would you consider my Denon X4700H to be a better AVR to power these Elac’s correctly to give me an overall better audio experience?
    Also, can you link me to the white speaker stands you used in this video?

  • @hyperq6048

    Hi Joe,
    Your review and your Speaker Leaderboard got me really interested in these speakers. I am sold. The tough decision is to decide on a matching amplifier. Between Cambridge CXA60 and Yamaha A-S501, which one will be a better match for these new ELACs?
    Ideally, a small Class-D amp like Yamaha WXA-50 or Denon PMA-60 is preferred, but I couldn't find many glowing reviews praising these class-D amps when paired with ELAC speakers.
    BTW, this hifi setup will be used in a small-medium living room for listening to classical music, audio books, and movies at 40%, 30%, and 30% split.

    @victorpirsoul3979 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Hi Joe,
    I have the Debut Reference speakers and, to my ears (in my room and with my equipment), they couldn't beat out the Polk LSiM 703's. Before I got the Debut Reference, I had the KEF Q150's and I was very happy with them until I took part in a trial of the Polk Legend L200's; I really enjoyed my time with those and they made me realize what I was missing with the KEFs.
    So, I agree with your finding that the midrange was "lacking" on the Debut Reference compared to the other speakers on your list and that is one reason why I ended up deciding to send them back. The bass was pretty good with the Debut Reference but it didn't beat out the bass response on the LSiM 703's. I was surprised at how dead the cabinets sound on the LSiM703'S; it is INERT. However, I found the KEFs and the Debut Reference had quite a bit of resonance when I knocked on them (in direct comparison to the 703's).
    Honestly, I thought that the Debut Reference threw out a very wide soundstage and, again, I agree with you that the center image was very focused. Definitely not "all bad" on the Debut Reference! I guess I just prefer the warmer sound of the LSiM703's; that and they sound more accurate and real, to me, than the Debut Reference (and the KEFs). Thanks for your review - GREAT camera work and video production!

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate that insight. Curious how much larger the LSiM 703 cabinet is. Also, what was the original MSRP on those? I guess I can look that up.

    • @victorpirsoul3979
      @victorpirsoul3979 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joentell The original MSRP was $1499 eight years ago. They have dropped in price significantly and are a bargain today! The cabinet, overall, is larger but the midrange and tweeter are in their own cabinet within the cabinet. Hi, I wanted to know if the elac reference debut make a good team
    and does it have quite a bit of power with the Denon pma 600 amp, or does this one fall short? .thanks.

    As Elac Reference R62 seriam um upgrade real e consistente em todos os quesitos em relação as Pioneer FS52?

    Got my DBR62 for my desktop and run with a sub.
    I did install a .1uf 1% metal-poly bypass cap on the tweeter. It made a pronounced difference in the air, detail and "solidity" of treble above 15khz. (fixed that drop off) Best sounding speaker I have heard short of maybe the Burchart-which are close to 2 grand as we know.

      Tried that as well, but it didn't work for me, even at 0.1uF the treble became too pronounced and drew too much attention to itself. If anyone is thinking of also doing this mod to add a bit more sparkle it's quite an easy mod but I would go down in value to 0.068uf or even lower at 0.047uf or better just change your amplifier to a more lively model.

    If I win I will give them to my church for use in the choir room - they deserve to hear high quality renditions of the songs they will be singing so they know what they're aiming at

    Couple comments Joe - Good review, I enjoy your stuff. I believe that on an earlier interview about the Elac DR A. Jones stated that the cross-over was modified too, helps justify the big price jump over the Debut 2.0. I have L/C/R with Elac Debut 5.2 (BS, cc, BS) and after some initial harshness that seemed to go away over time, they are great with 2 channel music but only ok on HT. When you compare to Elac Uni-Fi and SVS Ultra I assume you mean for 2-channel listening. For HT, the 3-way centers should excel, do you agree ?

    Good video. Not a wood veneer but a wood style laminate. But a good laminate. I a saw them in person at RMAF and thought they were amazing for price and good speaker regardless of price.

    can the smsl ao200 drive these speakers? I'm looking at these for desktop/nearfield use. I have a a 74 inch wide desk and the speakers will be sitting on a speaker stand all the way to the side of the table and a little further back at around 6 inches off the wall. But my listening position would be at around 4-6 feet away roughly.
