Will this huge van crush my tow truck??! A day in the life of a tow truck driver

  • A day in the life of a tow truck driver, towing a variety of cars all to the same shop. Starting out with my wifes Jeep Wrangler for a new valve cover gasket, then a box van with pressure washer inside that we got to use the frame forks on, and finally a Nissan Titan with died while driving down the highway and was stranded overnight waiting to be rescued

    Roadside recoveries must really suck. Illinois passed a law, saying you slow to 45MPH or get in the left lane, whenever Emergency vehicles are parked on the side of the road. Most don't understand that pertains to THEM, or decide it's too much trouble.

      Ive been doing this work for about a decade now. Personally I don't mind them that much. I've come to the understanding that it makes no difference. Laws don't matter either. Unfortunately for the customer this means they get told. "leave your keys in the ignition, and get in my truck. we can chat latter". The point is I am not wasting anytime. People do not pay attention or care. All of them for various reasons. The only thing I can do is, pay attention and hurry TF up. This means if you see a Roll back truck rolling down the highway and he only has one chain on... Dont say shit... he was hurrying up...

I've seen it all between construction, towing and just everyday driving, now it's mostly trying to get people to focus away from their phone long enough to know their surroundings. But you nailed it on the head, we have a world full of A.D.D. drivers that can't focus on one thing and sure as heck can't multi task. You the tow operator just have to take cautious steps like you do, pull in behind vehicle and get as much set up as possible, pull in front and limit the time you're there. I also carry 2 of the Code 3 rechargeable magnetic white flood lights that also flash color ( single color depending which one you buy, I have 1 red, 1 blue) and set them back behind the dead vehicle on the Fig line blinking at oncoming.. that also helps noticeably. This truck was originally a 2wd dually. I converted it to a single rear wheel 4x4. It still has the dually rear axle, and those tires have a high enough weight rating for everything the wheel lift is rated to tow.

    What all size forks do you have on your truck? I've been looking at getting some for my truck and there are so many different variations. What would you say ate the most common size. This is for medium duty like the box truck you're hauling, that I'm asking about. I had a stake body a few weeks back, and I ended up having to use my sling to tow it, my selfloader wouldn't go far enough up under because the truck had a hitch and the rear wheels were a few feet further then my extension would go, the same with my wheel lift on my truck with sling it wouldn't reach. So I used my sling, but it would've been perfect opportunity to pick up the frame with the forks. It was a solid frame all the way back to the hitch. Thanks in advance

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Just a set of short 3" forks and a set of 10" extensions. You very rarely need forks on a light duty truck, and when you do it's usually just to grab a hitch receiver or another light duty frame, so the 3" is a pretty good size.
