I was a crowd extra in moneyball. There were enough people to fill 1 section of the stands and they moved us around for different shots. They encouraged us to get up and go to the bathroom or get a drink or something to be more realistic and then gave us instructions on how to react to different plays like the Hatteburg homerun. It was a cool experience.
The upcoming F1 movie did this a lot as well. They had fake F1 cars built, with custom aerodynamics designed by the Mercedes F1 team, on top of the current F2 chassis. They had a fake team follow F1 for a big part of the season with said cars, and at one race had the cars line up on the grid with the real ones. They also had cinema cameras mounted on the actual cars, and are digitally replacing the originals with their team livery for the movie. And they also filmed at the Daytona 24h, with a movie car competiting in the entire race.
They also asked the normal crowd in grandstands to do the crowd shots In Spa about a month ago in between session they provided fake merchandise and flags and asked the crowd to cheer on camera to the win of the fake team
I was an extra in Seabiscuit, part of the crowd in Lexington at Keeneland. The masked blowup extras were novel at the time, and the crew was very proud of how they were pulling this off. The story you told here about the camera / crowd direction was told to us by the casting staff. As the day wrapped I ended up with one of the masks, and still have it. It looks just like the ones you showed: ghastly and comical, but the concept totally works on screen. Great vid, Paul. Thanks for shining some light on all this!

When he first mentioned Fever Pitch I had no idea there was an American version. The original version was a 1997 British film which was based on the English football league of 1989. Arsenal winning the title in 1989 it seems was almost as unlikely to Boston winning the baseball cup.
Giving people credit with such an amazing video essay, that normally are more in the background (pun intended), always makes me smile. They work so hard just so no one recognizes it. Thank you Paul for this and everything else!
I painted backgrounds on an Anime that was set in a stadium. Lots of crowd shots. I painted about 100 detailed background characters and duplicated them randomly to fill the stadium. Another artist worked on a different scene and used a different technique. I felt like mine was more convincing lol
I don't even like sports movies, but your videos are just so... respectful of the industry. There's so much heart and soul and story in the production of the movies themselves that comes out here and there but it's so unusual for it to be highlighted and celebrated and revered the way you do. This brought me to tears more than I think any sports movie has
In 1988 when I was 11 years old the Milwaukee Journal ran a story that was front page news. They are shooting a Baseball Movie at Milwaukee County Stadium starring Charlie Sheen and we could all be in the movie for free if we showed up at the ballpark for shooting. They filmed the climax of the movie with the biggest crowd on the first day of shooting since they knew it would be the day they had the biggest crowd. They packed that stadium with over 30,000 Fans for a chance to appear in the movie. My 2 younger brothers and I all played baseball for our little league at the time and it turned out to of course be "MAJOR LEAGUE" and it's a classic great movie that still stands to this day! Also IMO that movie had the best Crowed EVER For any Sports Movie! "WILD THING... YOU MAKE MY HEART SING!!!"

Great video! Miracle starring Kurt Russell is another interesting sports film. It’s about the 1980 US Olympic hockey team, and it was the acting debut for most of the actors playing hockey players because they were cast primarily for their skating ability. Definitely worth checking out!

Everyone puts the boot into the Star Wars prequels for excessive use of CGI. But there's a lot of model work that is flawless. That brings me to the crowds in the podracing scenes. They uses painted q-tips as the crowd and made them move by blowing air under the stands to jiggle them about. A simple method that works perfectly.
Ironically, I've always thought the game scenes in Jerry Maguire were kind of fake looking. Anyway, it might be a little off-topic, but the scene from Gone With The Wind where they had all the dead and dying soldiers is a real pioneer with mass crowd filming. They had a bunch of extras in costume, but also a bunch of dummies with reticulated limbs, controlled by the extras to give them motion and sell the effect. Looked great, and obviously it's still influential. Great vid.

I actually managed to be an extra for a sports movie while I was in college. (Safety, on Disney+). They filmed the big game for the movie during half time at an actual Clemson football game. It was kinda interesting because they turned on all the old motion graphics for the video boards that they had back in the day and I vaguely remember them changing the paint on the field from the usual to match the look it would have had. Pretty sure they had to do some minor touch ups in post to the stadium since it changed a bit too. The playa were kinda interesting to watch because they would run a full play with stunt men in then as soon as a hit happened everyone would freeze them the lead actor would run in from the side line to replace the stunt man and motion would resume. So that game I don't think they had any paid extras, besides players for the sidelines, everyone else was just at the actual game. I was at the game , but I also got to be an extra for a couple other scenes which was pretty cool so if anyone has a question feel free to ask.

King and fellow writer Sox fan Stewart O'Nan teamed up to write what was more or less a diary of the 2004 season, not knowing when the started the project how that season would turn out. King wrote an entry about throwing the ceremonial first pitch, and the footage of that moment shows up in Fever Pitch.

The 1966 movie Grand Prix strapped 65mm film cameras to real f1 cars, John frankenheimer was doing some crazy shit back then.
