    I remember gunnery with the German army. I had a hell of time shooting a controlled burst while the German soldiers could squeeze off single rounds. They laughed at me and said it was even adjusted to the low rate of fire for us. The quick change barrel is a idea that 100 years later we still can’t seem to master.

      @jamison884 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@chrissmith7669 M249 and G3 on a bipod are both LMGs and don't change barrels, but the medium MG version of the MG3 and the US equivalent is the M240 which fires the same 7.62x51 NATO round and also has very quick barrel changes at about 10 seconds. The M240 is now issued to a majority of infantry units in the US armed forces, ideally with a tripod mount for better firing stability.
      The X250 is set to replace the M249 for the US Army (and the X5 is set to replace the M4), which used the new .277 SIG Fury round at 80k psi chamber pressure (and hybrid steel/brass ammunition casing) for higher accuracy, less bullet drop, and therefore a greater effective range for both the X250 and X5. The newly designed modular NGSW-Optic system with integrated ballistic computer and the weather sensors required for those computations, and a suppressor. This means the plan is for all US Army infantry to have suppressors, along with that new high-tech modular optic, which also has a reflex red-dot sight if I recall correctly as a backup device, and integrated infrared/visible laser so a PEQ laser unit is no longer required to be forward mounted.
      If all goes well with this initial ~30k weapon order and initial integration, it will be issued to all front-line troops ASAP. If it gets to that point and they become the M5 and M250, the .277 will likely undergo NATO certification, contracts open up for NATO allies to transition over, and I imagine the USMC will likely replace their M249 limited inventory, as they switched to a hybrid model of the M27 full-auto/semi-auto 5.56 NATO built by HK using the short-stroke gas piston system rather than direct impingement. The same suppressed M27 rifle was first issued to the old SAW gunners, but they expanded that to all USMC riflemen more recently due to better performance over the M4. The reason it's a bit mixed between issuing some M249s still, is the choice of the NCOs and officers for their weapons composition based on the machine, as the M27 is limited to 30-round magazines with 50/100 being explored. It has a heavy barrel and great accuracy at range over the M249 even on full auto. They still have the M240s for medium MGs.

    1976 in Germany. Training with a partnership unit in the snow. We laid our poncho out in the snow and embarrassed ourselves when we couldn't fire short bursts. We turn around and see an older guy in a long gray overcoat come up to the table to be issued a weapon and ammo. The German troops stood at attention and gave him the weapon and a 25 round belt. He grabbed two more belts and went to a firing point. Threw the gun in the snow and laid down. Linked his belts together and began firing in three round bursts. He shot the shit out of the 25 meter target. Cleared the weapon, stood up and threw it over his shoulder and walked back to the table and turned it in without saying a word. I was in awe and asked the German NCO who was running the range about what we'd just seen. He said, yah he's pretty good. But then he had a lot of practice at Stalingrad.

Bcs thats not what an MG stands for, back in the day, the rule was ; if an MG shoots, get to freaking cover or youre dead, it was a symbol to actually "spam". the MG5 isnt that at all, the MG42 was the master of it, MG3 was good at it aswell but not as effectivly

    I feel like you people can't appreciate how cool the manufacturer's name is:
    the company's name is Rheinmetall.
    Metall is metal, obviously.
    And Rhein is the river Rhein/Rhine.
    BUT
    "Rhein" sounds exactly like the German word "rein", which means pure.
    So the company name sounds like "PURE METAL!"
    And that just makes me giggle every time I hear it.
    I feel like a bunch of metalheads should jump out of a corner growling every time someone utters that company name.

      @@Number-py1bs yes and no.
      Yes that it isn't a translation of that phrase. I just meant that the term "Reinmetall" sounds awesome in German and would translate into the two words pure + metal in English which is even more awesome.
      And I don't know anyone who'd say "Das is so Metal!" :D
      But sometimes we use the word as "Medl" :D and just make fun of it...
      MEDDL!!!
      As a German metalhead I'd use words like "true", "Das is so true!"...
      Oh, and funny sidenote: If you pronounce the German phrase "is leer!" (= is empty/it's empty) very quickly it sounds like "s'leer" which sounds like "Slayer"...
      So once the cups of beer run dry you'll start hearing the German metalheads scream "SLAYER!!!!"

    The simple Explanation which i gave my US, British, Frensh, Polish and Norwegian Comrades while experience the MG3 for the first Time was:
    On most MG's, you aim roughtly and squeeze the Trigger to hope the RPM do the hitting/Surpressing.
    On German MG's, you aim for Effect, squeeze the Trigger carefully and the RPM will do everything you want if you aimed right.

      The problem I always had with it was that I can put a 7rd burst into a tight pattern with an M240 but I need to make 2 or 3 bursts with the same amount of ammo and precision. The weapon is treated almost like a rifle. Firing longer strings, should you find targets of opportunity grouped, makes it hard to control without the soft mount and using the bipod only. On the soft mount its magical. But then a lot of GPMG's are light that. That fast fire rate has a purpose and it was proven in WWII, but the downsides are also pretty extreme. This is why most western GPMG's have much lower firing rates. Sure we can crank an M240 up to 900rpm, but why if its not mounted on anything?

    I have fired one of those, during my military service In Norway. We also had a turkish produced replica. I think you could get modified mg3 with Even higher fire rates, they used lighter parts inside. We never had those. The replica from Turkey was shit and the 5200 Guns was sent back after 4 years, In 97 i think. The german mg3's worked flawless and was a Joy to fire. Part of the kit was a glove to handle the barrels, which had to be replaced to cool after a few hundred shots. The barrel can be switched In seconds. You would normally carry at least 1 spare barrel. New mg3/mg42 was delivered with 1200 rounds/minute, and after 3000 rounds they was reduced to around 900, by drilling up the gas opening from 10 to 11.6. This was done to reduce ammo consumption and wear. The turkish weapons was delivered New with 11.6 gas opening, which meant that they never reached the "break-in" state, unless you fired 10000+ rounds.

    Since most don't know, or get confused by this: mg3 is not MG 42, it is not even made by the same blueprint.
    Yes, some MG42 was re-stamped and they where reworked to fit 7.62 nato and rebuilt to lower rate of fire, to be able to control it better, and replacing critical parts as part of the recoil operation, as in work with higher pressure, yep you read that correct, as 7.62 operates at a higher PSI than 7.92x57.
    However if anything, the MG42 papers where "lost" during the final phase of the war, and so they took/bought back a bunch of them to Germany and backwards engineered it and from that, the MG 3 was born.
    Slightly lower rate of fire and in the end different caliber.
    The inner mechanics of this weapon is sensitive and it requires skilled operators(This mechanic is also what alters, or if you want, increases the rate of fire, it can go much higher, but it can also decide to blow up in your face if you do that), as it shots at an average 20 rounds per second , that makes it 1200 rounds per min.
    And that saw sound is not the mic that is bad, it shoots so fast, that you cant hear a single bang, it is just one bang replaced by another etc.
    But as you also saw, at 20-30 meters, these guys had major issues hitting anything with it, this is because of the high rate of fire.
    Even for a skilled gunner, this weapon is hard to control in long bursts, when on bipod (like in the clip) If tripod(you have seen mg 42 in those, that design did not change) or vehicle mounted, anything that moves up to 800 meters with a gunner that knows his shit...is going to have a really, really bad day of multiple holes in the wrong places..
    However with that said, this is a bad gun for todays war, too heavy, rate of fire is too high (less is more) and it cannot be well operated with just 1 man, it requires 2 man minimum to actually be effective at anything.
    Other MG systems, even older ones, could be single operated and effective so, don't buy into the movie stuff about it, yes it is fearsome, but any fucking mg shooting at you with 800 rounds per minute or higher is going to make your day a very bad one..Remember rate of fire means jack shit if you cant hit anything, so lower RPM is a guarantee that even a fresh G.I can hit something. That weapon require allot of training to master, or to even hit regularly with it, when used in a combat role.

    • @AmazingLetsGo
      @AmazingLetsGo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lower fire rate means more controll of the gun and there for mor accuracy.

    That has got to be the sickest sounding single-barrel MG I’ve ever heard.

    0:48 he is Not Holding it right... He has to Press the Stock of the MG into his Shoulder with his left Hand to not suffer any injuries from the recoil. Just saying this as a German soldier.

      I noticed the same thing, but you have to make allowance's for the American's as they think that every time they get hold of a weapon; they are going to a gunfight at the OK corral??

      I very much doubt that there will be any serious injury from firing this gun. If you dont pull it in you shoulder correctly it may leave a bruise, but not more.

      @@hanfpeter2822 ever shot it? Do you have any experience in shooting guns? I doubt so. If you are not heavy build it can be serious when the wooden Stock Hammers against your bone.

    Even by today's standards, the MG42 is a reliable BEAST that has stood the test of time.

    • @bugfisch7012
      @bugfisch7012 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, reliability is basicly it's main issue - thats why they took MG34s for tanks. It was the better weapon. The MG42 was just cheap. Designed for mass production - wich changed a lot of things and is the true point in it. You finally could build every squad around a MG as the central point. Wich is still German infantery Doctrin today.
