    ABOUT THE SONG:
I wrote “Death, You Terrible Thing” just weeks after my dad died. It was the first time I had experienced death so up-close and it shook me. The first time I realized - deep in my bones - that death was not a sentimental, “circle of life” moment but a terrible enemy. This song is for anyone who has felt the shocking wrench of death and loss. It's brutally honest about the realities of death and also decidedly defiant in its hope. Here's the deal: Jesus's resurrection shakes its fist at death and - if our hope is in Jesus - we can too. I picture this song as my defiantly hopeful fist in the air.

    LYRICS:
    Written October 2021/ bpm 61
    See 1 Cor 15:25-26, 54-58; John 11:33-35; Isaiah 25:8, Rev 21:4
    Verse 1
I remember the sounds in his hospital room
Saw his heart give out after what he’d been through
I remember the words when they said he was gone
The way we cried, how it felt so wrong
    Chorus
    Oh death, you terrible thing
I know in my bones it’s not the way it’s supposed to be
But oh death, where is your sting?
‘Cause I have a God who knows, who sits and weeps with me
And I have a steady hope that all will be redeemed
    But you’re a terrible thing
    Verse 2
I can see her crying on the bathroom floor
The baby they loved isn’t there anymore
In the ICU, in the highway crash
The chemo drip and the heart attack
In the gone too young, in the getting old
The empty chair, the quiet home
    Oh Lord, how long?
    Chorus
    Oh death, you terrible thing
I know in my bones it’s not the way it’s supposed to be
But oh death, where is your sting?
‘Cause I have a God who knows, who sits and weeps with me
And I have a steady hope that all will be redeemed
    But you’re a terrible thing
    Verse 3
I can see Jesus hanging on that cross
His shallow breathing, his failing heart
I can see him weeping at his friend’s tomb
I know he’s weeping with me too
I can see him rising from the grave
I know he’ll wipe my tears away
    But until then, we wait….
    Chorus
    Oh death, you terrible thing
I know in my bones it’s not the way it’s supposed to be
But oh death, where is your sting?
I have a God who knows, who sits and weeps with me
I have a steady hope that all will be redeemed
    But you’re a terrible thing
    Tag
    You terrible thing

Thank you Caroline! We can relate to every line and phrase, either in our own experiences, or what friends have gone through, or are right now! I’ve shared it with many today and it’s given comfort and hope! Thank you for so poignantly singing such hard thoughts with hope in the One who changes everything! It’s on Repeat today, along with Sarah Kroger’s new song Human! Both songs bring tears and hopeful truths!

A blessed and gracious balance between sorrow and hope. Truly what a lament should be. Thank you for this gift, my sister. God bless you, and may this song reach the hearts in need of it.

Sister, I was just fine before that line about “having a God that sits and weeps with me” hit me like a truck out of nowhere. Ow. Loved the song but ow.
