Thanks for doing a video on the Ruby!! I have one on the way and I am so excited to use it! I also play a silver sky and I am LOVING the way it sounds in this video. great job dude!
Awesome! You’re welcome. It’s a super cool pedal, but it’s definitely the most “dense” as far as settings and learning curve of their three amp sim pedals. The manual was my best friend for this video lol. Super versatile pedal/sim, though. Appreciate your support!
I had the dream for about a year I liked it, but I do wish it did have a headphone jack. I was trying to go stereo and I got the ruby as well and then I realize how much the Ruby is fits my style more but it sounds so real and so damn good and warm.
I have the Ruby and was going to buy the Dream and run in stereo with 2 Fender Tone Master cabs. I love the Ruby too. Maybe I’ll learn from your experience and save some money 😂
I’ve been dragging around a 40kg AC30 for years. I absolutely love that amp. Over the years, I’ve strayed off the path of VOX every now and then. I’ve tried a Marshall JCM2000 combo, (nope) and Orange AD30 head and 4x12 and that was an awesome beast but waaaay too big! I tried a couple of Fenders and they were great but none of them “feel” like my VOX to play. My local music store lent me one of these for a weekend and I plugged it into a Fender Tone Master FR12 and honestly, it’s so close to my old VOX in tone and feel, it’s actually amazing! Now my beautiful old vox, scars and all, sits in the corner of my studio and I’m carrying that lightweight Fender cab and this pedal to gigs. My back is a lot happier and I’m still struggling to get my head around how they have managed to shrink my 40kg amp into something that fits in my pocket! It’s a great time to be a working musician!
That’s so awesome to hear. I’m not an AC30 guy (Deluxe Reverbs for me), so it’s cool to hear they nailed it with the Ruby! They really did a great job on the Dream and Woodrow too. Cool to hear it works with that Fender Cab too! I’ve been wondering about that pairing.
@ I love Deluxe Reverbs too. I’ve been thinking of getting the Dream as well and another speaker and running them together in stereo. I reckon that would be a great combo :)
Hi Tom! ALL your Videos are SO informative! I'm torn between the Ruby and the Dream as the only "Amp" I'll have on my Pedalboard (going into an Apollo Interface), so what are the pros and cons of each of them as a Pedal Platform?
First off, thanks so much for watching. Glad they are helpful! So, it’s honestly a matter of taste between the two amps they are modeling. The Deluxe Reverb and the AC30. For me personally, I love the Fender sound, so the Dream 65 won out for me. However, the Ruby is probably more versatile with the different types of sounds you can coax out of it. It’s definitely more complex, in my eyes, than the Dream. If you’re still torn and just can’t decide, the Strymon Irridium models a Deluxe Reverb, AC30, and a Marshall Plexi…so you can get the best of all worlds. It’s more limited with onboard customization and some features, but I honestly think it takes pedals better than both the Ruby and Dream. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, though! If you’re so inclined, I’ve got affiliate links for all of them that support the channel. Thanks so much and let me know if you have any other questions!
GREAT DEMO MAN!!! I have the woodrow and the ruby; both amazing, truly. I am running them thru the clean channel on my Fender Delue. I am not a big tech guy, so asking for help... Is this a bad thing? should I use an FRFR like LIne 6 instead? Sounds cool, but want optimum... LOL Cheers and Thanks mate. Great work; gonna watch the others...
Thanks! I don’t think it’s a bad thing to run them into an actual amp, it’s just going to change the character of the tone you’re getting. For example, if you run the pedals direct to a powered speaker/PA or recording interface, you’re getting the amp, cab, speaker, mic emulation. If you turn off the speaker/cab emulation, then you’re just sending the front end/reverb/fx the Ruby/Woodruff has to your actual amp. It’s not wrong either way! Just experiment and see what sounds good. I’ve actually the about getting a Woodrow just for the overdriven tones. They are insanely good. I wouldn’t really use it as an amp sim, like I would use the Dream 65. Hopefully that makes sense.
@@TomButwin Awesome! Thanks so much for the info and education. I do dig the sound through the Deluxe cleanside, but gonna try a Line 6 as well, I think, just to see/hear options... Good advice there too... This new tech is blowing my mind but it's given me something to really get into and enjoy. Baby steps, eh! LOL I am starting a wee late in life and from the 80's scene. I truly appreciate your detail and common speak for those of us late to the game. LOL I have tried to watch many of these and yours is hands down the best. I like that you did a vid per pedal as well. Im a fan and will be watching/learning. THANK SO MUCH!! Cheers and Bless ya mate. GREAT WORK!!
Appreciate it! I come from the pedal/amp traditional world, so this stuff is definitely “new” to me too. I opted to build a board around a pedal based amp sim because I wanted to keep my pedals, but also be able to go direct. A Helix or Fractal would have been cheaper, but a total different interface to learn…which I opted out of lol. Let me know if you have any other questions! I’m learning too
If someone already saved a preset on the right button, are you still able to turn the bass and treble knobs to see if the speaker LED blinks or not to see what channel they used??
Glad you enjoyed! UA gets around this creatively by stating any mentions of trademarks are just references to the gear they studied to create these pedals. Similar situation for the Fender inspired UAFX pedals as well. Pays to have smart attorneys!
@@TomButwin hi thanks for your quick reply. Sure i understand was Just a question whether uad have worked with VOX on this Like they did on with fender on the uad Plugin, in this way i would feel Mode at ease playing this Pedal😚 thanks again.
Thanks for the video bud, I just got this pedal , you probably explained it already, just one question when the LED turns green in the speaker selection, what is the difference red and green? thanks
In general, these pedals aren’t meant to go into another guitar amp. They serve as “the amp” and would go direct into a PA, audio interface, or some kind of a flat response powered speaker. However, there are no rules! Experiment. It might not sound exactly like an AC30 if you plug into a Deluxe, but there might be some cool tones in there!
Full disclosure, I didn’t test any pedals into the Ruby. I did test pedals into the Dream ‘65, though. I’d say it was pretty true to the vibrato channel on the real Deluxe Reverb, so my guess is the Ruby is somewhere close. Not the easiest thing to do, but the best way is to test it with your existing board/setup. I did so with the Dream and Strymon Irridium. I ultimately settled on the Strymon, but both were great.
I think that the knobs work backwards because the ac30 have them like that, facing the other way( sorry for the bad englsh, im from chile, southamerica)😂
Dude one question So I was told I can connect this pedal to a real tube amp and I did but I’m getting too much saturation ( my amp is a fender blues IV) so no inputs for send and return loop effect so the pedal is connected directly to the amp, universal audio said I just need to turn the speaker off but I’m not getting a great sound, my amp settings are in clean just not sure if this works or if this method is not good for this pedal
I think they’re right you need to turn off the speaker emulation. However, I think all of these UAFX amp sim pedals really shine when they are used to replace an actual amplifier in a DI situation. Just my opinion.
1. Everything you’re hearing is direct. The SM7 is off every time I play and I’m monitoring through in ears (look closely and you’ll see them). So, no live audio in the room as I was filming. 2. Go to 09:11 of the video. That’s the room reverb you’re hearing…from the pedal itself.
@@TomButwin Touche' - but I still can't hear how the amp portion of the pedal sounds, because I'm hearing the reverb. If I want to use the pedal for recording, for example, I'm never gonna use their room models. I'll use Altiverb or a 480L or something. Thanks for clearing it up tho.
I realize you’re a “Fender guy”, but demoing a Top Boost simulator with a Strat-like single coil guitar is somewhat redundant. That said, thanks for posting.

Does anyone know how to get U2 sound?
Daniel Lanois.
Add a delay set to about 400 milliseconds with lots of repeats. That will get you in the ballpark.
How would this sound when used on an Amp like a fender deluxe. Will it sound close to a Vox AC 30?

It’s so subtle that I don’t think it warrants its price tag.
The Woodrow and Dream (and newer additions to the line) are Dimitri more exciting to me.
Prob the only thing that sounds realistic of an ac30. No other modeller can ever get it right
UAFX are tough to beat.

A strat into the Ruby is one of my favourite sounds
