They have different strengths foe sure. Solely based on sound the Dream and Ruby are unbelievable. The nail the tone, character and dynamics of the real thing. The ACS1 is pretty hard to beat in terms of functionality. Having the chance to use two amps at the same time is really neat and in a live band situation it's going to be hard to tell the difference. But I wouldn't use them for recording, while I would do that with the Dream or Ruby. It's a lot to consider when choosing one over the other. But yeah, think of how much of a gamechanger UA will be in a home recording situation. You can get that shure 57 mic'd amp sound in your flat without bothering the neighbours?! Crazy.

Great review guys! I tried both the UA Ruby '63 and Dream '65 and felt they were the most convincing modelled amp tones I've tried to date, so authentic and truly amp-like - great pedals! Personally though and having owned a Helix I feel UAs amp modelling is the next level in this type of technology, it's easy to dial-in and sounds extremely close to the the amp circuit it's designed after. But, the Dream is only a Fender '65 DLXR amp model with Tremolo and Spring Reverb...the HX Stomp is many things. You should really consider what your exact pedalboard needs are and then design your tone(s)/effects the way that works best for you. I hope this helps!

I don’t think so. UAD has such a different philosophy to the whole “modeling” idea. They are digitally recreating the entire circuit of the hardware they emulate, and using r&d that’s partially funded by their partnerships with scholarly institutional research. Strymon afaik is just trying to make the best sounding digital pedals they can. It would be hard for them to compete with uad’s ethos without taking a totally new approach to their mission statement of their company.

The ACS1 can also run 2 amps in stereo the Dream can’t so if you sold the ACS1 to buy a Dream you lose half the capability. I use the Walrus live with my pedal board in front and it can sound huge, I’ve never experienced it sounding smaller I think you need to spend more time with it I also use aftermarket IR’s so maybe that’s a factor. Mostly I use a tube amp but some gigs are either limited space or the volume needs to be easily controlled so I went for the Walrus. No complaints from me and I’m a long time tube amp guy.

Can I run the stereo fx out of my stereo reverb into the Dream then stereo out the dream to a mixer. My Katana is also direct out to mixer as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You could do this, yes. I've run a very similar rig myself and the soundguy loved it. Sounded huge. Only thing you would want to do is run a dry split (with a mute to the dry amp / Katana). We make "Isolator TX" for this purpose. Then you run through your wet effects as normal - Dream (stereo is fine, yes) - Mixer. Now FOH and monitors can mix wet and dry independently! Big win for everyone. Does that make sense?

We essentially set gain, kept the EQ's fairly equal - although adjust them slightly to suit - and that's it. We could have done EQ after the fact (in post) but with a treated amp (like the mic'd amps these are emulating) seems a bit unfair but an argument could be made either way. We tried to do as little as possible to ALL amp and cab sims and let them speak for themselves as much as we could... But I see your point. We went for "If your headphones were plugged into the pedal for practice - what would you hear... This is close to that approach. Not sure if I'm completely making sense...hopefully.

For amp / cab sims... it's arguably less of an issue not having an FX loop since you can place them right after dry effects. But I do see your point if you wanted control over pre and post wet effects... I have used Shure SE215, 315s, and Beyerdynamic DT 770’s (250 ohm). I once used a set of over ear Sennheiser’s but I don’t know the model. Never used any conventional headphones, always monitoring headphones.
The master volume does need to be high but the volume was loud enough for my liking with all these options. The 770s being my favourite.
I’ve only done this when I needed to practice in a pinch. Using a proper interface is obviously preferable. As is using speakers.

I was disappointed you didn’t spend more time trying to get the pedals in their sweet spot with the same tone . You can get the Iridium to sound a lot better than this comparing it to the dream .

Totally agree... We could have spent more time on each pedal. It was tricky... we were trying NOT to get used to each pedal before the video so it would be harder to blindly pick each one (not used to them as much this way) but there definitely are improvements to make to the approach next time. Thanks for watching!

The test is a little obsolete since the V2 firmware update on the ACS1 came out late 2023. The ACS1 was just ok until then but it has completely changed the pedal. UA has done a fantastic job, but people shouldn’t be making any decisions on the ACS1 based on this shootout anymore.

  • @gregsteffey1266
    @gregsteffey1266 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for doing this. I have an ACS 1 and was considering a Ruby. But may look into the Dream now. My reason to change would be if I can delete a drive pedal from my board. I actually run my ACS1 clean and always have 1 drive on. If the UA pedals have a 1st stage drive I like I could see changing it out. Otherwise I am happy with the ACS 1 when I don’t have an amp as an option.

I didn't see the answers of the blind test, but I'm sure 1-Acs, 2-Dream and 3-Iridium. 2 is the easiest because it's the only one of this pedals that breaks much earlier and like that. It was probably at noon btw. 3 is the Iridium, much less scooped than the others, because you actually need to turn the Mid knob all the way down to get a Blackface sound. It's on the manual, but nobody seems to know and do that. And 1 is Acs, I know very little about it, but sounded very good to my ears.

I recently sold my iridium to a friend, not because I didn’t like it, but so I could try the ACS1. UA sounds good, but I really like the option of different types of amps and wanted to try different amps left and right, and I definitely couldn’t afford 2 units. Additionally I need the headphone amp. This is absolutely 100% my only practicing tool. Someone suggested getting a 1/4” to 1/8” adapter. In my experience that doesn’t work. In the Iridium (haven’t confirmed with the ACS1) the headphone amp is an actual component that can amplify the sound for headphones. This is why it uses higher amperage while running with headphones. Trying to go out the standard ports with an adapter sounds very poor. I admit I could be doing it wrong. Anyway, on the fender test, I almost thought the UA was the iridium because of the amount of gain. The Vox I really had no idea between the three. I have to say though, on the Iridium and Fender I really loved the sounds I had on mine way more than what was played here. These seemed way more dark and muddy than how I set my pedals. I’m sure it was difficult to try to match but both of those pedals can be set to sound way nicer in my opinion. The dream sounded really nice, but I’m not planning on moving my ACS1 anytime soon.

I still prefer running amps whenever possible as well, but in ears are definitely one of the big perks to it... means I can put my amp in an iso room and crank it. Running an amp on stage (quietly) really is tricky with getting as much out of it as possible.

@@GoodwoodAudio I'd be willing to try in ears at my current church. The regular sound man has a degree from Full sail and has a solid understanding of sound. I use the 4 cable method with an HX FX, and my amp has a footswitch with an 8-pin din. My base tones all come from the preamp of the Mark V. Thankfully, I don't have to crank it to get a decent tone. That is a lot of cabling to run into an iso room off stage. It might be better to run a reactive load and IRs. It would be nice to not be concerned with my volume. When I play bass, it's easier to worship. My only concerns are hitting the right note and following the kick drum.
I want to start a more hard rock worship team that does special events. I'm praying the right people will come along. There are not a lot of Christian musicians in the small town I live in.

Even when the Walrus Audio pedal came out, most people favoured the Iridium. Now the UAFX line comes out and all of a sudden the Iridium is crap? I feel like a lot of the flat character you are hearing on the Iridium in this demo is down to simply tweaking the eq.

    • @GoodwoodAudio

fair. I don't think the Iridium is crap by any means... it's just when you hear it against the UA stuff, it highlights how much more life / feel the UA pedals have. I like the sound of the Dream, but consider its options utterly woeful. Primarily, I play bass and am using the Ampeg SGT- DI. Apart from two extra blendable inputs, and a headphone out - which are all great for practice, or can be used to run your own in ears from, I can run four different 1/4” outputs, one completely dry, one with the pre-amp but no IR and one with optional IR. It also has an XLR output with the option to run IR or not.
For instance, if playing a gig that is being recorded, I can send the amped as well as a dry signal to the board and still be able to run an FRFR, a slaved amp, or my own IEM on stage.
The Dream/Ruby allow the user to send one signal to the desk and then put up with whatever signal the desk sends back through whatever monitors the place has (if they have any).

I know it's been a year, but why didn't you guys throw the Woodrow in the mix/test? Do you have a separate review on that, or did you not prefer it at all? Thnx, Brent

honestly... didn't have one to test! We only had these two in the shop at the time. Still have never had a woodrow on a setup or had one come through for videos!

Great Vid guys! Thanks for putting this together, any thoughts and rehashing this video with the 2.0 ACS1 update. They say it radically changed the tone and feel of the pedal

Ive heard that as well. I haven't spent any real time with the 2.0 update though... But I've only heard good things so far!

What about the Orange Terror Stamp? It actually has a tube preamp inside it…. Has effects loop and cab sim and speaker out…

good question. I dont have much experience with it...have tried it quickly and it wasn't for me, but to be fair I didn't go that in depth with it.

Was only interested in the Vox compare, guessed correctly. Have seen a sort of tribal thing in against UA. I've loved Strymon all along but would go with the Ruby Direct In with my Rickenbacker 325cv64. Would love to see a UA Ampeg w/Jensens and UA Hiwatt w/Fanes. The Fender I don't know. I once rented a Twin Reverb w/Altecs over one w/JBLs. I owned 3 Fender Showman heads with 15" Altecs but I didn't have much of an impression at the time.

Nice. Ya, Ruby is pretty good. Curious if UA will expand this line...
