  • With friends like Lyndon Johnson, who needs enemies? Hear LBJ talk with "friend" Albert Thomas over a bill concerned with wheat sales to the Soviet Union. Fun fact: Johnson would run for re-election a year later with "that damn fool Humphrey" as his running mate.

I'm from rural Texas. And these tapes capture perfectly how the small town "courthouse politicians" (as my dad called them) conducted business. Direct, up-front, and a combination of threats and cajoling. LBJ was a classic example of these guys. Thanks so much for posting this!

that’s another inference from right wing conspirator nuts. President Kennedy came to Texas to honor his personal good friend Thomas and headlined a dinner the night before he was murdered. Johnson and Thomas were in Texas politics for 25 years together and both adored JFK. Its an insult to repeat such a stupid rumor that a photo shows some type of sinister “ wink” insinuating they were collaborating with murder or glad they were there. The record and facts from eyewitnesses and the record bear nothing of the sort on that plane

That is a pretty spartan assessment of that time in history. Yes LBJ escalated the war effort, thinking the the US would prevail. This was the first proxy war we had participated in and hadn't learn the lesson that you can't win a war for another country if that country lacks the resolve to win. I'm a fan of LBJ, but not for that stupid war. What? Are you joking? I was in the Marines in 1969. Nixon became president in '69 and pulled the 3rd Marine Division out in Nov. of '69 as you know. I was also at Camp Pendleton in April of 1971, and the 1st Marine Division, the last Marine Division in the War came out of Vietnam in April of '71. And that left just one US Division in Vietnam. So in just 2.5 years all the Marine were out----and just one Army Division of the 9 that served in Vietnam were out of the War. Nixon was pulling us out within a year of getting into office. When did you serve to not know that? How is that escalating the War----as you said in your comment. And 3 years after the US pulled our ground troops out-----Saigon fell. Nixon promised to get us out----and he did. Now both Obama and Trump promised to get US troops out of Afghanistan-----and didn't. So I give Nixon a lot of credit for ending the War and getting a truce. We have zero Idea if Humphrey would have gotten us out sooner. Hurphrey could have been like Obama and Trump-----who knows.

I love LBJ. But if the date is to be believed Kennedy wasn’t dead a month. You would think politics wouldn’t yet be up for discussion.

Then you are a civic incompetent or a clown: Head Start, Medicare, Medicaid, and a whole host of improvements to the country and its future under the Great Society for LBJ - historians put him in the top 15 presidents consistently. For Joe Biden - he got us out of a thankless war, launched the largest infrastructure law since the interstate highways were started, began long overdue efforts to start addressing climate change, and created new national monuments. Already Biden is a great president.
