      @@kyannandmat You might teach this old buddy a thing or two. I'm also on quarter acre. 🙂if I could have goats or sheep I'd be happy! We're limited per town to chickens, no roosters. Most people think they need huge area, what I saw you do is amazing. Hoping to see more content!

      She has little prisoners in her yard. It is inexcusable. Educate yourself. Humans have no business "growing meat". Number one, it is cruel. Number two, it is unnecessary. Number three, look at YOUR teeth, length of intestine, and nails. Your teeth are just about identical to chimpanzee´s teeth. They are frugavores. Your intestines are four times too long to be eating meat which is why humans get colon cancer in correlation with the amount of corpses that they eat. Your nails are not claws. Now stop using/abusing animals. No excuse for that cruelty. Look at those little things in small cages desperate to get out. Shameful. @@kyannandmat

    You are so right it is not about fear it is about being healthier. I am 54 and after several big health problems my doctor gave me the best advice ever. She said eat the way your grandmother use to and as much as possible stop eating can food and it really made a difference. Glad I found your channel ❤😊

    Thank you so much for sharing! I have big homesteading dreams but I know that it’s going to take time; but seeing what we can do in a smaller space is really inspiring. I always feel a little offended when I watch people that have 5 acres and they call it a “small” homestead but I have to remember that size depends on the availability you have. But I’m so excited to see y’all’s homestead continue to thrive!

    • @kyannandmat
      @kyannandmat  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely, I totally understand that mindset of being discouraged by someone else's "small" homestead being 5 acres. But also love what you pointed out about size being relative on what each person has available to them. Cheering you on in your homesteading dreams and love seeing others making it work on a small space!!

    I love that you are showing us FROM THE START. You have a wonderful yard with LOTS of great things going on. You and your family are so smart to start your journey now despite not having the exact amount of land you one day desire. Very inspiring. I know you are not going to be at your place super long but I do encourage you to check out the no till methods of gardening. You will LOVE not only the amount of water you save and the FANTASTIC quality of soil that it produces over time but also the lack of WEEDS you will have to deal with. I recommend going to Paul Gaustchi Back to Eden gardening video. This will help to jump start you. You sound alot like me. Once you get an idea you jump in feet first. Also for some homesteading skills, Homesteading Family channel is amazing as well as Melissa K Norris, Huw Richards, MI Gardener, James Prigioni, and well...I could go on. My husband and I have been on this adventure for a few years now and have learned so much. All my best!! Keep up the great work.

    I'm so jealous. We have a quarter acre and can't have any livestock. We are trying to move but it's been hard to find a house for 7 people on land that isn't super expensive. We just looked at a place that's on an acre and I was happy and making plans of what I could maybe do with it. I just looked up the city ordinance and found out I can't. On that acre I can only have 1 beehive and 8 chickens that's it.I want to plant fruit trees and bushes. I wanted 30 chickens with roosters to raise for eggs and meat. I wanted turkey, and goats for milk and soap, and pigs and 2 or 3 beehives. I just want to cry. I feel like we just can't get out from under government restrictions. We have to have over 5 acres to not have limitations. I thought we could supplement some income with this but not if I can't get most of it.

      The rules and regulations can be SO frustrating and disheartening. I feel similarly to you, although we can have a bit more than you here, it feels like there are lots of rules to get around and we aren't in the position currently to buy a larger property. I'm really focusing on expanding my garden and food production this year while we're waiting to be able to have more animals and livestock in the future. I'm so sorry you're in a tough spot as well and praying that the Lord would open doors and opportunities for you. I'm trying to be content in finding joy in the things we are able to do and learning as much as possible in some of the less "exciting" or shiny parts of homesteading like gardening, food processing, setting up our home to run well to support all of the "outside" homestead activities we hope to do in the future. Sending hugs!!

    I bought an abandoned farm with 30 acres (15 of wood and 15 of pasture) end of September 2021 , we moved there in January 2022 ... so I am as new in my homestead as you and wow! How much we learned in various domains (garden, animals). I am so impressed by your setup on a 1/4 acre ! Having goat there is totally surprising me! Just happened to run across your video. I just sold my 4 goats due to health issues. I found keeping their barn and pen clean was really hard for me. They had 2 huge electric fences hooked together that they were in during the day. We have 5 acres with about half woods and half yard. Keeping your chickens with the goats helps a lot with parasites. Our goats were Nigerian mixed with mini nubian. Super cute! The smallest one was the one that figured out how to jump the 4 foot pen fencing. It wasn't a big deal because he just ended up in the electric fence area.

    • @kyannandmat
      @kyannandmat  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I honestly didn't even realize that keeping the chickens with the goats helped with parasites, but we had no parasite issues while we had the goats so that's super interesting! We had to rehome our goats about 6 months ago due to a few things until we get a larger property so I totally understand how hard it is to have to let go of something you love.

    KyAnn how exciting for you and your family to start your new lifestyle adventure! I imagine that you’ve heard of these channels on TH-cam before, but just in case you haven’t these are people who’s channels you should definitely follow and videos you should watch to learn things from the beginning to success. First and foremost I would say would be roots and refuge farm. Roots And Refuge Farm is run by Jess and Jeremiah Sowards and I think you will learn quite a lot from her she’s probably not a great deal older than you are and she started the way you did. Also I would say whispering willows farm, that would be Jill and Nathan. They actually upgraded their farm by purchasing Jessica & Jerimiah‘s farm when they upgraded theirs and moved to another state to much larger piece of property and expanded tremendously. Another good one to watch and learn from, not just gardening and farming/building a homestead, but this channel is called acre homestead, and that couple is Becky and Josh. Becky has only been gardening for I think it’s three years now but she jumped in head first and went very large in her backyard, now they’ve just purchased a larger property and she is starting right now going to be building a new homestead in the new property from scratch. She’s a good person to watch, she also does a great deal of from scratch cooking and meal preps and freezer meals and the kind of things that I would imagine a young busy mom could benefit from. Another one is a channel called Mary’s nest. Mary, teaches not only from scratch cooking but how to make literally everything from scratch. You mentioned butter and Mary can show you how to make it not just butter but cream cheese, sour cream, yogurt, various different types of cheeses, home remedies, and all types of baking additives etc.
    Your channel popped up on my feed out of nowhere, and it’s refreshing to see someone new starting in the beginning and I know you’ll be successful at it!
    Oh by the way, you may want to move all the pallets away from the fence because the goats will climb on the pallets and jump over the fence very easily. Don’t put anything in front of your fence that they can climb on they will do it and they will jump. I would imagine the easiest thing to do to stop them from getting out of your gates would be to buy tea posts and other pieces of chicken wire or that type of rolled wired fencing and simply extend the height of your fence all the way around your property by at least 3 feet or more. That might make it a little more difficult for them to get over the fence but definitely do not stack anything next to the fence like those pallets that’s the easiest way for goats to jump out!

      Hi, Sherrie! Wow, this comment encouraged me so much! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave it!! First of all, the fact that it popped up randomly for you is so encouraging since we are just starting out and definitely are growing from the ground up. I'm so glad that you found us and took the time to watch our video!
      Jess Sowards and Jill are two of my all time faves!! I've binged all of their content in the last year and absolutely LOVE them and everything they are doing + teaching. I have watched a few of Acre Farm's videos but I need to check it out more! And I haven't heard of Mary's Nest yet so I'm excited to check that out! Thank you so much for the recommendations!
      And thank you for the advice on the fencing and goats as well-I really appreciate it! We have only had a goat escape our yard once so we are in the process of fixing that small area of fence. We haven't ever had them escape around the pallets but never say never! I probably should work on moving those just in case, I appreciate the heads up. Our goats really haven't been the typical escape artists that people always complain about, which I'm so grateful for! But definitely better to avoid problems early if possible so I really appreciate all your kind advice! Thank you so much again for your kind comment! So excited to have you here! ❤️

      I love that so much! Definitely enough space! We ideally would really like to rotationally graze our goats so long term, we definitely would like more space to be able to do things like that. But, if you're willing to bring hay in, you can totally keep a few dairy goats on that size land and they can lead a super happy life! We love having our goats here! Best of luck with your homestead!! Thanks so much for watching!

      Hi! Totally valid question! From my experience, towns are SO different in their rules and regulations so it totally depends on where you live and even what area of the city/town you live in. I have a dear friend that isn't allowed to have even chickens at her house, but literally across the street, she would be allowed to have them! So wild.

    Outstanding work so far, you got the basics covered, it's definitely time to move on to a larger property where you have more options and hopefully can get a rooster. If you don't mind me asking, have you started to offer any products for sale or do you plan to?

      @kyannandmat  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for this encouraging comment!! We definitely hope to get a larger property soon as we can afford it and dream of doing so much more. :)
      We personally are not trying to sell any farm products currently. We’re actually focusing on building up some income streams online teaching others and building community that hopefully will be a benefit in the long term for our family personally as well as lots of others who can learn and grow along with us. Just to be transparent about our goals as far as income streams for the homestead!
      We did make money selling baby goats when we had our goats, but as we’ve had to sell them currently, we won’t be able to continue that until we get a larger property. That is something we dreamed of having a larger herd to use baby goats to help fund some of our homesteading goals in a financial sense! I forgot to mention that since we’re on pause from that right now.

    Hi KyAnn, you did a great job presenting your small homestead in this video. I didn't realize chickens and goats can manage happily in the same area. That's good information. Planning your yard so your children have areas to play is very important and your ideas were thoughtful. You have done a tremendous amount in a short period of time! Personally, while I enjoy watching homesteads that have 10+ acres, the reality is that most of us will be working with our small suburban yards. You have a winning combination with your backyard farm. May I ask, what state you are in? Mostly so I better understand your climate. Blessings.

Shameful.

    Do you guys have a livestock trailer? How did you get the goats home or transport them when needed? What vet bills are typical in a year? I have chickens and am wanting to branch out to a few goats for milk, soaps etc…BUT don’t know what all is necessary for a few and I’m trying to see if it’s financially possible for us! Thank you in advance if you get the chance to answer I love your channel so much! ❤

    • @kyannandmat
      @kyannandmat  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We do not have a livestock trailer! We have a pickup truck and we have used large dog kennels to transport the goats home (or with the tiny baby goats, we held them in our laps) and that has worked perfectly fine. Or I've also seen lots of people that have SUV's or minivans do the same with dog kennels in the back. As far as vet bills, I'm sure it can vary greatly depending on your goats' health and history, but we have a vet on call for all 4 and have only needed to take 1 goat in so far. She ended up being perfectly fine, we were just being overly cautious and it cost us less than $150 for the visit, testing, etc. So I would say if you have healthy animals and keep up on their care and wellness, the vet bills overall should be pretty minimal!

    How do you guys deal with critters that try to get the chickens at night, or have you run into that before?

    • @kyannandmat
      @kyannandmat  ปีที่แล้ว

      We actually have been VERY lucky and haven't had truly any predator issues at all, to be honest. A few run in's with neighborhood cats, but honestly one has only actually gone after the chickens once and we were able to scare the cat off easily and no issues since. We have lots of possums and raccoons that we see on our street at night, but they don't seem to go near the chickens. I don't know if the goats kind of add a little protection that predators don't want to miss with them or what? Either way, sorry I'm not of much help there!

    • @kyannandmat

      They aren't super loud, but I also wouldn't say they're overly quiet. We have a few goats that are more dramatic and a few that are quieter so I feel like ite evens out. Definitely not louder than neighborhood dogs would be the majority of the time! And we haven't had any issues with neighbors getting upset about the noise!

    How much milk do you get each morning from your momma? Also did u find it hard to adjust to goat milk?

    • @kyannandmat
      @kyannandmat  ปีที่แล้ว

      We are not currently milking her until she kids again this spring, but we were getting about 2 cups a day from her, give or take. To be honest, she didn't produce as much as we were hoping so we are going to see if she produces more after this kidding, but we also will be milking our full Nubian goat for the first time this year as well. It's all such a learning curve! Many Nigerian Dwarf's produce a lot more than that, even with being a miniature goat so she may just be one that didn't end up being as great of a milker as we had hoped.

    • @kyannandmat
      @kyannandmat  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And as far as the goat milk, it was not a hard adjustment at ALL! Literally tastes just like cow's milk. Depending on how you keep them (without a buck around as they tend to be smelly and dirty and that can affect the taste of the milk, interestingly enough) and the kind of goat you get as well as how quick you get the milk cooled down after milking, all of those things go into it and if you do it well, truly can't tell the difference. We've had other family members taste it as well and they agree!
