Fun Fact: The troll masks in this movie were repainted props from the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns From Outer Space.

Unpopular opinion: if Jim Varney was alive and well today and had never left us due to cancer, I strongly believe he could have played Revolver Ocelot in a live-action moive adaptation of _Metal Gear Solid_ . He'd probably have to wear lifts and padded clothing, but I strongly feel like he could have made it work.

"I never knew when to quit. Just ask my fourth grade teacher."
Fun Fact: The one of two highest rated Ernest (Jim Varney) movies alongside Earnest Saves Christmas (1988).
Casting Notes Fact: Eartha Kitt auditioned for the role of Old Lady Hackmore. The casting director for this film would later cast The Emperor's New Groove (2000) and Eartha voiced the character of Yzma in that film as a favor to the casting director.
Action Star Fact: Barkley, the dog that appeared in the film as Rimshot, performed all of his humanlike functions, such as driving a car and operating a garbage compactor, with the aid of his trainer. Scenes in which the animal appeared to be in danger, such as when he was under attack from a sword-wielding troll, were achieved using harmless props and careful editing.
Prop Connection Fact: The pizzas seen being thrown at the bullies who try to attack the kids' tree house are re-used props from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze (1991). Both movies had the same prop master, Doug White. The Chiodo Brothers are also credited with special effects for this film, they made Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988). Some of the trolls in the finale were repurposed Klowns. Also, the same spinning Klown death effect was used for the troll deaths.

I thought Ernest goes to Jail was pretty good too.

I had heard that _Ernest Scared Stupid_ wasn't the draw that Touchstone (Disney) was hoping it would be, and stopped doing Ernest movies altogether because of that alleged reason.

Grandma Ernest is still my fav lol. Him trying to escape from prison like that always cracked me up.

No joke: my twin brother and I called milk “miak” for like 10 years after we watched this as kids in the 90’s. Our dad even got in on it, my brother and I were huge milk drinkers and from then on dad would always ask us if we wanted a glass of “miak”

This is still to this day one of my fave movies! The intro is amazing, it didn’t need to go that hard but it did. Jim and Eartha just kill their roles! You can tell Eartha had fun.

I completely agree! The energy in that intro is unmatched, and both Jim and Eartha truly brought their characters to life. It’s a classic for a reason!

Ernest movies really are fun to watch, especially the early ones. If you get a chance, you should watch Ernest Saves Christmas during the holidays.

No, things changed completely for me right when the '80s ended, and I didn't really get to see that much back then that I would have wanted to, including this.

I always wanted to see a movie starring Ernest, Pee Wee Herman, Elvira, Weird Al and Mr. Bean.

The closest I got was the parody biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starring Harry Potter, there's a scene where Al meets Pee Wee and Elvira, unfortunately not played by Paul or Cassandra.

@ll7868: That would have been one of the greatest media crossovers of all time. Hell, Ernest P. Worell was more or less a hillbilly version of Pee-Wee Herman to begin with.

The trick to watching an Ernest movie, if you're not a child, is weed and/or alcohol.

Showdown, I am SO disappointed in you for not 'Shopping your head onto Ernest's body, LOL. Anyway, nice review. As a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio that has grown up through the early 1980s, I can tell you that Ernest was kind of a big deal in advertising for local and major companies in the eastern Midwest and upper South at the time (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana). Ernest used to plug milk and dairy products for a company called Trauth back then in my region specifically. Out of the four Ernest movies produced by Touchstone Pictures (aka Disney), I'd say that _Ernest Goes To Camp_ was my personal favorite despite how mean-spirited the movie generally was to him. I hope you have plans on reviewing _Ernest Goes to Jail_ in the near future, because that movie is absolutely bonkers, quite possibly equal to or even greater in being bonkers than the canonical first Ernest movie, _Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam_ (1986). Keep up the good work.

There's a zombie movie from South Korea called ALIVE! that's pretty good but there aren't many reactions to it. There's a lot of good movies and tv shows from S. Korea, their horror and action genres are outstanding. Last night I watched the action movie Uprising set in the 1500s about a former slave who leads a civilian militia during a Japanese invasion, it's got some amazing sword fights, I highly recommend. Uprising just released on October 11, 2024 on Netflix.
