The actor that plays Ernest (Jim Varney) is a trained Shakespearean actor. I've seen him do the soliloquy from Hamlet while in his Ernest costume, the he ended it with Ernest's "Know-what-I-mean?" It was hilarious.
Jim Varney also did a great job playing Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies movie.

Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Goes to Jail and Ernest Scared Stupid are the best of them.
Funny thing is Jim Varney (Ernest) is a classically trained stage actor with a fondness for Shakespeare. His skill at impressions is top tier. Younger audiences will know him as the voice of Slinky Dog from the Toy Story movies, but for those of us that grew up in the 80s, Ernest P. Worrell is his most defining character. Ernest was invented as a fictional character used to sell various products by pitching them to (and subsequently annoying) his friend, Vern. Eventually, he got his own movies and a TV Show very similar to Pee Wee's Playhouse.

  • @psychoween
    @psychoween 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

As others have said, Ernest started as a character by actor Jim Varney, for a series of commercials. The character became so popular, larger commercial clients began using him and Ernest Mania took off. Jim Varney supplied the voice of Slinky Dog in the Toy Story franchise, until his passing. What some people may not know, is that Jim, along with being a comedic actor, was a trained Shakespearean actor as well. Videos can be found of both the Ernest commercials, and Jim preforming Shakespeare, on TH-cam. The unseen first person character of his friend Vern, was from his early commercial days. Ernest was always telling Vern (the camera) about the products he was pitching.

Also, fun fact: Ernest started out as an advertising mascot like Captain Crunch, Mr. Clean, or the Energizer Bunny. It's actually the weirdest and only case of an advertising icon becoming a movie star. He was so popular that when the CEO of Disney, Michael Eisner, went to an Indy 500 car racing event, he took notice of how popular Ernest was. At first, someone in a Mickey Mouse costume came out, but when Ernest came out, he got more applause than Mickey Frickin Mouse. Eisner immediately wanted Jim Varney and his Ernest character for Disney. And that's how the Ernest movies got started.

For the record, since you kept mentioning it, Rudolph isn't actually one of the reindeer. He was invented in the 30s or 40s as an ad campaign for Mongomery Ward. The song came a few years later when they made a book out of him, and it became pop culture. The other reindeer are much older, from the early 1800s or so when the original poem was written.

I've heard it said by others...and I tend to agree. That, regardless of how people feel about this movie in general, the film does have one of the most perfect depictions of Santa Claus. Top 5, easily. He walks around with the magic of the holiday season just rolling off him, so much so, children recognize him anywhere. He never judges anyone in this film. He's kind, warm, and accepting. Maybe he has a naughty list, but it's the sort that must be really hard to get a spot on because of how understanding and forgiving he is. He, more than any other reason, is why this movie feels like Christmas.

Vern is a running gag in Jim Varney's Ernest routine that he had been doing in commercials since 1980. I guess in a sense Vern is supposed to be an avatar for the audience as we are usually placed into his perspective for ads and I believe his Saturday morning show also featured this perspective whenever one of Varney's characters addressed "Vern". I'm pretty sure Jim dialed back addressing Vern once he started doing Ernest films as those were rarely if ever shot in a first person perspective.

Wassailing got Christmas banned for several years. So basically what would happen is a precursor to trick-or-treating done at Christmas time. Young men in the town or village would get together and go door to door singing carols. If you've heard "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", you might remember the bit "Now bring us a figgy pudding / Now bring us a figgy pudding / Now bring us a figgy pudding / And a cup of good cheer". Figgy pudding was a type of dessert like a bread pudding made with figs. The closest common thing we have today in America is probably a cobbler. Meanwhile, the "cup of good cheer" is exactly what you're thinking - booze. Specifically the wassail.
The next line is more telling though... "We won't go until we get some / We won't go until we get some / We won't go until we get some / So bring it out here" And this is why Christmas got banned in the colonies: If you didn't have any alcoholic punch and cake to hand out to your carollers, they would f--- up your house. TP and shaving cream didn't exist yet, so they had to settle for just smashing everything. Rip up bushes, knock over anything standing, break windows, etc.
Christmas back in the 1700s was a lot more punk rock.

Describing Ernest as the blue-collar Pee-Wee is pretty much spot on. He even had a Saturday morning kids' show.
The reason we get a first person view of Vern goes back to Ernest's origin as a character for a series of local and eventually national commercials. He's the reason I still drink Mello Yello to this day.

Ernest started out as a character in a series of TV commercials. Just like the sequence in the film where he barges into his neighbor Vern's home, Ernest would show up at the door, or the window, usually saying "Hey Vern, it's Ernest!" With the distinct implication that Vern wanted nothing to do with him. The character was so popular that they created a children's sketch comedy show around the character. Then they made a series of Ernest movies.
Jim Varney, the actor behind Ernest, was in quite few movies playing other characters. Until his death from lung cancer in 2000, he was the voice of Slinkydog in the Toy Story franchise.

Varney's best-known character is Ernest P. Worrell, who would address the camera as if speaking to a friend, using his trademarked catchphrase "KnoWhutImean, Vern?" In 1980, the first commercial featuring the character advertised an appearance by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders at Beech Bend Park, an amusement park located near Bowling Green, Kentucky.

I love the Earnest movies. But to get a feel for him, you should first watch a compilation of his various national commercials. It is how we were first introduced to him. You should be, too. He is the only character that I am aware of who made a leap from local commercials to hit movies. Albeit probably too many of them. Oddly, only the character made the leap. Jim Varney is only known as this one character. An absolutely hilarious one. Oh. And Vern made the leap, too.

Ernest; Jim Varney is an important Pop Culture icon. As well was one of the few actors allowed to randomly adlib many of his lines to make more impact with his comedy. Jim / Ernest was so important to him, he refused to allow himself to be seen by anyone, especially children seeing him smoking cigarettes. He adored children and their innocence and laughter. If Jim was spotted "out of character" he could switch it on just as fast as Robin Williams could throw out impressions just to have them smile. No matter where he was. Jim stated during the filming of Ernest Scared Stupid, that no matter where he was, no matter if he was known or not, he is Ernest and Ernest is and will always be there for everybody no matter what. Ernest will always be a friend to entire generations. Despite all of his goofiness and shenanigans, Ernest taught one thing to many, sometimes you got to just listen to another person's problems no matter how impossible they may seem to start to make things better.
