    This knife is the most deserving of a Kydex sheath in TOPS' entire line-up.

    Thanks for this video recommendation. Finally made the decision and bought it last year. It is a great fixed blade option for the woods. I've tested it in the humid Indian jungles and Himalayas and it works extremely well. Got a good kydex sheath for it and have carried it on almost every hike since the purchase.

    Aaron, I considered this knife for years but never picked one up for one reason or another. Eventually I forgot about it in the continuous mix of great knife releases. It's fortuitous that you did this review. You put this great bowie back in my crosshairs. In fact I jumped and ordered one to review on my channel and add to my personal collection. Thanks brother.

    One of the best knives TOPS makes. PWB has been my edc for over 4 years. I have very large hands and have no problems with the handle.
    It makes a great camp knife too. From processing firewood to cleaning fish, it won’t let you down.
    But the best thing about it is all the knife envy is creates in everyone else around you.
    Jeff Prather gives a Bowie Seminar in Tucson and it’s well worth the trip. Mumma Bear and I went through it last year.

    I gave my first PWB to a brother, have my replacement finally on the way so I'm watching the thing in action, over a year later from letting it go. Medium hand looking at the neck again, it isn't so narrow, and I ran the old one through the gauntlet. Big hands might feel it but if there's a worry about it performing, don't worry.

    I bought a TOPS Szabo US Combat Knife about 10 years ago (the first knife I'd bought that wasn't a Gerber or Buck type knife), and have been wanting the Prather War Bowie for as long, I'll probably have to get it before I lose the chance (at a reasonable price at least... like the Spyderco Szabo Folder or the Microtech Venomtech...).
    I've been really into Cold Steel XL folders lately, as in my state you can carry anything, as the laws are based on intent, except that any fixed blade knives have to be open carried. Which means if you take it in a car, it has to ride in the trunk, and you can't transport it only for the sake of open carry. You'd have to have a reason, like "I'm taking it to get sharpened" or "I'm bringing it to show a friend" or some such crap. Why it's like this, I don't know, but at least anything else goes!
    Cool video!

    So between the Longhorn Bowie and the Prather War Bowie, what is the best Tops bowie for general do everything mid-weight EDC or survival knife? I love my Silent Hero, but I have always been more of a fan of clip points and am looking for a bowie-style knife in the same general size range to replace it. Tops does such a fantastic job with the 1095 that I decided I need another Tops. I was leaning towards the Longhorn but the Prather has caught my eye as well, recently. I agree Tops needs to start sending everything in quality leather or kydex. Which ever of the two Tops bowies I end up with, it will get aftermarket sheath made for it. Just a shame for Tops to put such well made functional tools in barely function nylon trash.

  • @ssunfish

    Blade and forefinger cutout are no question GREAT, coffin handle/ straight handle, narrow neck not good for XL hands: I'd have to overcome personal reservations. I'm curious how this would pair up with Caleb Musgrave's Dragonfly 4.5!

  • @MK-uc3ow
    @MK-uc3ow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I used the blade over one years but it is no doubt that this is a large knife which has the unusual sharp edge. Not only that, the sharpness sustains for a long time through the heavy use. Only one problem is the original TOPS sheath and its two Velcros are troublesome but Custom Kydex sheath doesn't have the useful porch on it... Hmmm, that causes me a headache...

    • @Dosetsu1
      @Dosetsu1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TOPS can greatly improve their nylon sheaths with just two modifications:
      1. Kydex inserts that hold the knife in place rather than those loose plastic inserts that do nothing for retention.
      2. Snaps in place of or in addition to velcro.

    • @MK-uc3ow
      @MK-uc3ow 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Originally, I don't think all of concepts of TOPS nylon sheath are so bad. Only one concern was two velcros and they are too scratchy and they often bite our cloth or bags. Unfortunately, this blade comes with that nylon sheath but I compromised with it. As we see on this video, the blade itself is so good and the porch on the sheath is so useful. Furthermore, TOPS's products are slightly changing as you described. I'm looking forward to see their future sale.

      Neither of those bucks would stand up to what this Tops does!!! They could if buck would quit putting the effing hollow grind on the blades!!!

    This knife is perfect! What dummy would complain about the narrow part of the handle??? There is always someone complaining about something! Get over it! This knife is just a all around good knife!

    I wonder how this compares to Ontario’s Bowie

      TheMissouriPhantom Tops is lighter, more streamlined. As Aaron demonstrated, this one CAN do survival chores, but is more designed for fighting. Condor bowies are bigger and thicker

      Preston Normile I was referring to his Ontario’s Bowie video.

      One of my Bowies is the Ontario marine raider..
      In my opinion I would go for the Ontario..

    Great knife. Have you done the John Muir trail? What knife would you take if you could do the whole trip? #mailbag
