Nice! A big burly budget Bowie....and made in USA. I kept waiting for some bad news, but it never came. What a great value. I don't 'need' a chopper, or something big like this, but I may have to get one anyhow.
Been using the same one for 16 years. Used as an axe, hammer, thowing knife (for fun) small jobs, big jobs, cleaned hundreds of fish and hasnt failed once. I bought another a couple years ago. They changed the coating from smooth epoxy to traction. Mine still has some of the original coating above fhe grind. Also added o-rings to the handle
If you had yours that long, then you have the 1095 hc Steel version, that one is 1070 hc Steel with the new style sheath ,a lot of folks like the newer steel choice and the military still has the 1095 version made specifically for them. But the dearly are carrying the 1070 hc version and it is substantially less expensive for the consumer. 📸💰⚔️💰📸
Good job, Your one of the FEW REVIEWERS that gives a reasonable review and not a torture to failure review. I watched many Boobs break good blades on frozen heart of the pine logs and then acted shocked the blades chipped.
I have this knife and love it. To improve the grip even more though try to find some multiple sized thick rubber “O” rings (found in the plumbing section of most hardware stores) and slide them up on to the handle into the slotted rings on the handle. Start and end with the smaller “O” rings and save the larger ones for the slots in the middle of the handle. Trust me, this mod is great for improving both the feel of the grip and for improving the retention of the knife when swinging heavily. Best part is if you don’t like it you can remove them and you only spent a few dollars.
Didn't like o ring idea, stock is better for me. Of course I have a tendency to prefer smooth handles though(far less chance of hot spots). I do not death grip knives when chopping as it fatigues hand to quickly, let the handle do the work and use a small pinky lanyard, fatigue will stay at bay much longer. To each their own though.
Your videos are great. Testing is real world and unbiased. I trust your assessments and this one was no different. I own an older Ontario SP6 -95 that I bought in 1999-2000 and the edge out of the box was not great. I'm glad to hear they've fixed that issue. Keep up the great work.
Your reviews are awesome! I just ordered one along with an ESEE 6. My first Ontario & ESEE. Been debating over birthday knives for weeks and those are the 2 I’m getting.
I’ve been thinking about this one for a time! I’ve had some weird thing against Bowie knives for the longest time. I always felt like they were too cartoonish but after some time my opinion has changed. Loved the video Gideon!
Great to see you have so much fun with this knife. I wanted the sp5 after I saw your review of it, I love bowie knives. I was in Cabelas saw this knife, had a gift card and had to buy it. I really love this knife. Sometimes I just put it on my belt and strap it to my leg just to walk around the house with it, lol.
I'm a big Ontario knife fan. I have 2 of their products and they have not failed me yet, over a 20 year span. They make awesome knives and military knives too.
Additionally on my sheath I ditched the shoelace leg tie and replaced it with paracord in a cobra knot braid, which if you consider by the time that goes around your thigh that is a fair amount of paracord you have at your disposal. Cobra braid has about a 13:1 capacity
Hey Aaron, another fantastic informative video:-) you always cover every aspect of every product that you review and that shows a level of true professionalism that you have for your craft.
I've had mine for over 17 years. Got it from brigade for 75 bux back then and have put it through the ringer. Still tip top after all these years. Can't tell u all Ive used it for. My favorite EDC outside of work
Still love this knife! I have some expesive Bark River Bowies, ESEE and Cold Steel big blades but my SP10 Raider is easy to sharpen, holds its edge well, cuts and chops like a beast! unfortunatly they are now makiing them in 1075 for a higher price. Still a well designed blade though..
I just put my order in, thanks for the review Aaron. I hope that it is a better fit for me than the SP-8. Even with gloves on that thing had some serious vibration on my hands. I ended up giving it to my brother.
I got this knife last year. I love it but like my other Ontario blades, it came fairly dull. I don't have the confidence to sharpen it myself but I have used it a few times. It's a beast of a knife.
Great review 👍...but clearly I have been something wrong because in 60 years of camping all across the USA in every season & weather conditions, I have never ever found any wood that was so wet that I needed to use my knife to baton wood to start a fire...🥺
Aaron, I think Ontario has upped their game on grinding the SP line. I bought an sp5 a couple months ago and I was shocked as to how sharp it was. I was expecting to have to spend time fixing the edge for $40.
Have it, it's a beast, love it. Sharpens like a dream, takes a decent beating, though if you plan to beat on 1095 or 1075 for more than a day or two, you'll want a sharpener handy. OKC is getting a lot right.
Cant wait for mine to arrive. I do almost daily trail work brush clearing etc. Made in the USA sold me on it. Hard to find budget, quality and made in the USA all in one product. I think between that and a Mora Bushcraft Black I'll have it covered.
I won a couple of older Nighthawks, a Sentry, and an Intrepid. Buck makes a great knife. I have been a fan of Ontario for years. I own several in fixed blades and folders (same as Buck). You can't go wrong with either manufacturer (although I prefer the Bucks made in the USA).
For trimming eye pokers and other brush clearing it doesn't replace the machete but It's short enough that I don't have to take it off it's heavy enough that even if I can't see I can swing it around and anything that gets hit by it gets hit by the weight of a hammer and it doesn't have to move super fast to generate a lot of momentum so it replaces the hatchet and then of course there's the spear Factor. And then there's the guy in the gas mask who made a video showing what it took to break it and that inspires confidence so I call it worth its weight and it's in the grab bag
Hey Gidion of Gidion Tactical it's 1070 hc now pal 😎 It's the newer blade steel the 1095 hc is only for the military now and has been that way for about 5 years now. 💰💰⚔️⚔️💰💰⚔️⚔️💰💰
Well sadly, here we are in 2022 and just purchased a new Ontario SP 6 with I'm guessing their new 1075 steel and been trying to put a decent edge on this damn blade for hours. Absolutely unreal how damn steep the grinds are. So sitting here once again trying to bring that relief edge back down so it's at least usable for the stuff I like in my blades. Definitely planning on picking up this sp10 this week so I truly hope the edge is Abit better than the one on this sp6. Thanks for sharing man.
This was a great video. Very educational. I would have overlooked this knife normally because of the price. When they are cheaper I tend to not have faith in the blades sharpness. I will have to subscribe to your videos because you cover everything. Great job man!
I have the sp 10 and sp 8 and out in the wilds i would not swap them for any other knife i dig holes in the ground to make fires in with the sp 8 i cut and shave wood with eiter thats in my hand i have never sharpened them thank you ontario for making them there a life saver...
It's highly functional for sure, but I wish the bottom edge was straight. It appears to have a slight curve from tip to hilt. I've been trying to keep watch on prices. I almost got an SP-8 for $15.00, but the price was changed hours later. Then it was around $35 in December, but it changed too. The SP-53 is holding at $90. I'm glad you mentioned this facet of the knife industry. Between manufacturer and dealers, sometimes they promise a price, but it ends up higher while other models are often reduced and placed on sale regularly.
I bought my SP-10 year's ago, after watching this vid. When you know the origins of the design, you'll understand that this was/is an anti-survival knife. I got mine to fill the tactical role of 'shock and awe' 👹
Just grabbed one of these. Looking for a chopper that could double as a stabber/hacker if things go pear shaped. Didn't see anything better under $50 and this video helped confirm that. Absolute beast. The new 1075 is fine for what it is intended to do. I carry a Fiskars hatchet I got 15 years ago for firewood chopping. This will be strapped to the outside of my pack for path clearing and zombie hacking duties. Happy Halloween. Hope you're enjoying the fall colors wherever you are.
Apparently the company is going under soon so I just picked one up off Amazon. Did more research and it turns out the company was sold and it’s the factory in NYS that’s closing.
Ya have a SP-10! Glad you like it! I like that model too! The new (1075HC redesigned sheath) Ontario Lines are much better on the Fit/Finish even the old Pilots Survival comes sharp! The Sheaths are cool too I prefer them on most of the models as well. Lol, Rocky Mountain Toothpick!
This knife rules, especially at the price. If you're thinking about getting one and flipping through comments, just do it. It sharpens super easy with a ceramic v sharp too, which is a plus.
I have a 1095 SP-10 and another one that I'm not sure if it's 1095 or 1070 but it has the original sheath only different from the one I know is an original is it has the white writing on the side of the Tang and not the stamped writing in the metal of the Tang. SP-10 by Ontario Knife Company is a Classic. 💰💰💰💰⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️💰💰💰💰💰⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️
Great review Aaron. I should have picked one up when they were $39.95 on Amazon a couple years ago! I'm going to get it now though for 60 bucks. You really can't beat this knife for this price. Yes, the sheath is quality, but I just don't like the fabric sheaths. This thing needs leather or kydex. If anyone has a good budget recommendation please reply. Thanks.
I picked one of these up for $40 just before they changed the sheath. I haven’t seen it that low before or since but like you said still a great deal for $60. I wonder if they changed the grind as well because mine sure did come sharp but my BK9 out-performed it in every way. Still a great knife and I love it. It’s just badass. I was chopping some scrap wood and didn’t see a nail; chopped right through it with no damage to the edge 😳
Best thing about this knife is that I sold it for more than i bought it for. The grind is ridiculously thick (just compare it to something resonable like the bk9), hence it doesn't chop nearly as good as it should for the weight it has. And the sheath insert is actually shorter than the blade....
You'll be better off with the testosterone Nancy. Wish I could find a cure for your idiocy, since while I comprehend your original comment completely, you obviously don't. Oh well. I find that many people on TH-cam use words and phrases while having no idea what those words and phrases mean BTW if the testosterone is too skeery for you, maybe you could find a female to do the chopping for you.
so I hear and see comments about the steel grade possibly being 1075 and not 1095 ,I have a older one that I know is 1095, but one more would be nice for the lower price ,would prefer 1095 if possible but but 1070 or 1075 whichever the new steel is will be fine for $40.00 or so.
I almost got this knife a ways back it looks cool decent company but I already had the cold steel recon and 2 kabars so even though the price is great I passed but definitely a cool knife if I could I’d trade a kabar for it though great video knives a beast 👍✌️.
Hello, got a SP-10 yesterday. I find this knife very good, but it don't seem to have the same performances as those you show in your video, especially in carving wood. Could it be less sharpened than yours ? Am I doing it wrong ? Do you know if we have to sharpen the knife with time ? Thanks by advance
This is an awesome knife. It came slightly dull, but I sharpened, and chopped the heck out of a small bunch of large tree branches with ease... It held it's edge beautifully.
Finally someone who can pronounce "Bowie" correctly. 😂 The Sp53 is the best for chopping. Great all around survival knife/machete. I like both the Sp10 and Sp53.
Just ordered one for $65 and I can't wait to Rambo it up with it. Did I need it? Nah. Did I want it? Oh, heck yeah! And besides, every real American needs to own at least one Bowie knife.
So I was interested in getting one of these, Problem is Im god awful at maintaining angles when sharpening. I just use my Lansky turn box for my smaller knives which takes care of that for me however I can't imagine a knife is big as this would work well with that, So my question is what are my options for sharpening a blade like this?
Nice! A big burly budget Bowie....and made in USA. I kept waiting for some bad news, but it never came. What a great value. I don't 'need' a chopper, or something big like this, but I may have to get one anyhow.
Bill Green Yep 👍
No need just waaaaaaant! 😁😆😝

You should do a series or long video comparing and testing the whole Ontario SP line of blades u own . And rank them
Instablaster...
Love Bowie knives. I said something about this knife last night. My wife said looks like a Father's Day knife.
Butch Hill I wish my father liked knives than I’d know what to get him😁.
Butch Hill sweet!
Good luck Brother! I hope you get it.
Butch Hill Did ya get it? Super high value U.S. slab.
Bruce Leroy yes I did!
I’ve absolutely loved my SP 10 for about 15 years now.
Great to see you have so much fun with this knife. I wanted the sp5 after I saw your review of it, I love bowie knives. I was in Cabelas saw this knife, had a gift card and had to buy it. That thing is a beast for $40. Thanks for the review, great job as always!!
This is now 2021 and the SP10 is now better than ever! It's a Great Tool!
I've had one every since they came out! I've put it through all kinds of use and love it!
Love that knife! Bought one for my son and I. We, are very happy campers!!!
I'm a big Ontario knife fan. I have 2 of their products and they have not failed me yet, over a 20 year span. They make awesome knives and military knives too.
I love mine, i use a mora as a companion to the raider bowie for finer detailed tasks.
I have been eyeballing this knife for awhile. Time to get one
Love mine have had it 20 years

This knife checks all the boxes for me
Favorite knife I’ve ever owned. Still using the factory edge and it’s frightening 3 years of heavy use later.
I just put my order in, thanks for the review Aaron. I hope that it is a better fit for me than the SP-8. Even with gloves on that thing had some serious vibration on my hands. I ended up giving it to my brother.
Love this knife so much and with the crazy price I brought two of them, one for my vehicle and one on my military webbing 👍🏻🇦🇺

That's a beastly beast of a knife. A must have for camping and SHTF scenario.💥💯
I just ordered this baby today I can't wait to do my review on and I think it'll make a great camping knife! Thanks for your awesome review!
is yours in 1075 steel?
Just bought one of these. I have the Airforce 499. Love Ontario they have donena great job.
Used my glock 81 knife for about 15 years. Retiring it for now and this has taken it's place as a camping knife for me. It's fucking badass. I love it
Aaron, I think Ontario has upped their game on grinding the SP line. I bought an sp5 a couple months ago and I was shocked as to how sharp it was. I was expecting to have to spend time fixing the edge for $40.
This is the best birthday present ever

Purchased! Thx for the great vid Aaron!

I own an sp5, which is a wonderful bowie knife especially for survival. No guard, but I still love it
I don't think you can go wrong with these Ontario SP line of knives. I'm slowly expanding my collection.
Cant wait for mine to arrive. I do almost daily trail work brush clearing etc. Made in the USA sold me on it. Hard to find budget, quality and made in the USA all in one product. I think between that and a Mora Bushcraft Black I'll have it covered.
One of my favorite knives of all time.
Mike Bankston the buck bowies are pretty good too.

This was a great video. Very educational. I would have overlooked this knife normally because of the price. When they are cheaper I tend to not have faith in the blades sharpness. I will have to subscribe to your videos because you cover everything. Great job man!
Oh yeah! I got this bad boy and it's easily my favorite bowie
Just got one yesterday because of this video. Great knife and at $55 it’s a steal.
Yea, had mine for awhile. Wanna get another cuz 2 of these is way cooler than 1.😎
I have one. Excellent big hunking knife!
Have the Sp8 & 10, both Big Bang for the buck!
You can pay more and not get more!
Will be getting one soon and have informed a friend of mine about the closing of the company for he's a knife collector also
Is yours in 1075 steel?
Came across an SP-10 at a pawnshop and walked out with for $20, minus the sheath. Thinking of ordering some Kydex sheets and making my own sheath.
I have the sp 10 and sp 8 and out in the wilds i would not swap them for any other knife i dig holes in the ground to make fires in with the sp 8 i cut and shave wood with eiter thats in my hand i have never sharpened them thank you ontario for making them there a life saver...

Just picked one up and I am modifying it with a cherry wood handle and removed the baked on finish. The tang is about 5/8s.full length.
Got one. One of my favorite pieces of personal property. Call mine Black Betty.
I bought my SP-10 year's ago, after watching this vid. When you know the origins of the design, you'll understand that this was/is an anti-survival knife. I got mine to fill the tactical role of 'shock and awe' 👹
Love this blade. Great review!
With the new sheath yours is the 1075 hc version Aaron
Ya just heard about that so sad
That black coating comes with a warning ⚠️ when you read the paper work same as essee and other black-coated knife ..looks bang for the money though
As usual! The price went up on Amazon after your review!
This knife rules, especially at the price. If you're thinking about getting one and flipping through comments, just do it. It sharpens super easy with a ceramic v sharp too, which is a plus.
Ontario Sp10 or CS Marauder bowie better for combat/self defense?
I have a 1095 SP-10 and another one that I'm not sure if it's 1095 or 1070 but it has the original sheath only different from the one I know is an original is it has the white writing on the side of the Tang and not the stamped writing in the metal of the Tang.
SP-10 by Ontario Knife Company is a Classic. 💰💰💰💰⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️💰💰💰💰💰⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️
th-cam.com/video/duWpm9xd12U/w-d-xo.html
1095 with ole style sheath ,how cool is that pal.
My wife would say that I need another knife like another hole in my head lolol love that blade!!! Blessings 😇 🇺🇸
Then draw and X on your forehead, and tell her put the hole here!!!
Awesome Ontario bowie knife! 😊👌
Now that they are manufactured using 1075 are they worse off, or is 1075 still ok for a knife like this?
Great review Aaron. I should have picked one up when they were $39.95 on Amazon a couple years ago! I'm going to get it now though for 60 bucks. You really can't beat this knife for this price. Yes, the sheath is quality, but I just don't like the fabric sheaths. This thing needs leather or kydex. If anyone has a good budget recommendation please reply. Thanks.
I like mine but I took a piece of steel wool to the blade and took the bed liner off
Shane Luna sooo how did that go 😆😆😆😆😆
Must have taken forever. I had to use a chisel and sand paper. Still took a few hours to get it purdy.
It's 39.99 now
Best thing about this knife is that I sold it for more than i bought it for. The grind is ridiculously thick (just compare it to something resonable like the bk9), hence it doesn't chop nearly as good as it should for the weight it has. And the sheath insert is actually shorter than the blade....
If you have trouble chopping with this knife maybe you should try some testosterone therapy.
You'll be better off with the testosterone Nancy. Wish I could find a cure for your idiocy, since while I comprehend your original comment completely, you obviously don't. Oh well. I find that many people on TH-cam use words and phrases while having no idea what those words and phrases mean
BTW if the testosterone is too skeery for you, maybe you could find a female to do the chopping for you.
You would be my first choice.
Sorry to disappoint you Shelia, but I prefer women.
Mine wasn't terribly thick came pretty sharp too. Stropped it and now can shave
so I hear and see comments about the steel grade possibly being 1075 and not 1095 ,I have a older one that I know is 1095, but one more would be nice for the lower price ,would prefer 1095 if possible but but 1070 or 1075 whichever the new steel is will be fine for $40.00 or so.
Great review
I almost got this knife a ways back it looks cool decent company but I already had the cold steel recon and 2 kabars so even though the price is great I passed but definitely a cool knife if I could I’d trade a kabar for it though great video knives a beast 👍✌️.
Sold! Mine is on it's way.
They make some good stuff for sure and good prices ..
It's coming along with Katana and Tanto full tang in D2
Wow! That looks sooooo cool!!
I got me a new fathers day present coming from Amazon... I hope it's as nice as it looks in your video... 😁
Thanks Aaron. Great review as always. Much appreciated.
Just ordered one for $65 and I can't wait to Rambo it up with it. Did I need it? Nah. Did I want it? Oh, heck yeah! And besides, every real American needs to own at least one Bowie knife.
Ya I'm getting this one.
Purchased $40 from your amazon link. Good lookin out brother. God Bless you and your family.
nice , not a bowie guy but i dig your straight up good quality review , simple and easy like
a good blade Smith thanks
Thanks Aaron! Buying one now!
I got my Marine Raider in 2007 or 2008 and have the leather/nylon sheath. Could I upgrade to the ambidextrous sheath?
In November 2021 no longer low $40.00s, around $60.00 is the best internet price I've found. Today I paid that at Bass Pro Shop.
Got a Smith and Wesson version of this and love it. Modified it by taking the top of the guard off so I can put my thumb on the back of the blade.
So I was interested in getting one of these, Problem is Im god awful at maintaining angles when sharpening. I just use my Lansky turn box for my smaller knives which takes care of that for me however I can't imagine a knife is big as this would work well with that, So my question is what are my options for sharpening a blade like this?
Is the SP-10 actually full tang? Because I saw a review for the SP-5 of the blade snapping of from inside the handle due to light usage
Great video Aaron thanks!
I have that knife and I love it
2075, not 1095. Thanks again Aaron. Going to pick one up.
Ya my version is 1095 but they have since started making it with 1075
Thanks
