I almost never comment on video's, especially these types. But man, this was beautiful. This is one of my favorite films, and I love that you took the time to make this. Bravo.
It's also been one of my favorites as well and making this video only solidified that for me. I felt giddy making it just out of admiration for how deftly and subtly Cianfrance crafted it. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
When this movie ended I just sat through the whole of the credits in complete silence. I just sat there and thought "that's... Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life"
I watched this movie on youtube at about one in the morning, never heard of it and I knew nothing about it but I knew Gosling and that was enough to get me to get me to check it out. Didn't sleep that night, never really planned to, but the next day there was this inescapable feeling hanging over me and this movie just wouldn't leave my head. Beautifully understated and unique and just all around gorgeous, and this video finally helped me figure out at least one of the components as to why it had such a profound impact on me
Watched it for first time this week 11/2020) and same. It stayed in my head especially the next day. It’s been several days & I can’t get it out of my head. Never looked up video essays of films until now.
Cianfrance is one of the most underlooked & underrated director I've come across. I've loved his work ever since I first saw this film all those years back now. Blue Valentine is one of my all-time favourite films for example. Oh, and that score to Place Beyond The Pines is hauntingly beautiful too.
this movie touched me so much because of my passed away father, he was so passionate with motorcycle , and while i was growing up i started to fall in love with motocycles something that i never had feelings for some times you cant run away from what is in you, you will Always have something in common from your parentes no matter what it takes its in your blood
I relate to this post so much, my farther passed when I was young but he to loved motorcycles and sports, no matter how hard you try some things are simply in your blood to do, loving sports and motorcycles is one of those things I share with my farther and you with yours
My father was an absolute garbage, he passed away so many years, i don't blame him, he was orphan from ww2 in France. I try my best not to follow his steps, but sometimes it's so hard, got some addcition, life can be so meaningless for me. I don't have children yet, so afraid to let this legacy on shoulders. but hope is the key, i find lights when i travel with my back pack and no plan ... maybe one day, everything is gonna be alright .
I watched this while I was still pretty much in awe from the film and the ending of your video put me over the edge. Awesome work. I really enjoyed it and it made me respect the film even more.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed all of the parallels! Cianfrance did the same thing a bit more explicitly in Blue Valentine to great affect. Fantastic film, fantastic filmmaker.
I love that you're talking about a lesser known film and would love to see more of that. Classics are all well and good, but there are already so many essays about them. I think it's important to recognize contemporary artistry and innovation, so I appreciate this. Great job and keep up the good work.
Thanks! I have a special place in my heart for the lesser known films that come out each year, movies that aren't trying to be anything crazy, but accomplish what they're trying to do so well.
I cried so much through the last 50 minutes of this film. I’ve been wanting to watch it ever since I saw it come out but never got around to it. I’m glad I finally watched it. Amazing film and this video is amazing as well! Thank you!
I think some of the best films are not necessarily the perfect ones but the ones which touch on a beauty and are original. The place beyond the pines is flawed but painfully beautiful.
Fantastic analysis, very entertaining. One other thing about this movie that struck me as very profound was the symbolism of the chain smoking. Avery kills Luke, but the ghost of him lives on in his son AJ who is seen smoking in several points in the film, and there was even dialogue and scenes specific there to let you know he smoked cigarettes. namely the scene where they smoked pot in the storm sewer, and when AJ sees Jason get dropped at school off by his mom and dad. I know Jason, too, did smoke cigarettes but it was much more pronounced in AJ. I know it seems like I'm reaching, but that is how I interpreted it. I feel like this could also be seen as a sort of echo. The man he killed is echoed in his own son.
Really good job man, i watched the film at least 5 times, and only just now i noticed they were eating ice cream at the same spot, i also loved the way you adressed the opening and last scene.
My natural temperament has a weird sense of saudade. This is maybe why I like this movie. The way the movie’s designed, you feel through and know this is all it is and then it’s gone, on ways that’ll never meet. And the presence of this man’s character takes an irreplaceable value in your life’s timeline and it stays (Nobody, nobody replaces it, it remains perfectly intact as it is in your head, timeless!). You know and feel this from where it started to the end. And that just creates this aura/value/ image of this person that becomes so elevated from others. The alpha like presence people preach about, is actually how people felt about Luke’s character, this is what that saudade stricken irreplaceable valuable presence is with him ( which some confuse with superficial infatuation). See how extra I acted up there, this is how stemmed the value becomes over time. AND IT REMAINS UNTOUCHED UNTIL DEATH. Even when the admirer realizes the logic behind it. IT’S THAT ODDLY SPECIAL. And now I shut up
The message i took from it is that all the shit that happened was no ones fault. Luke only robbed banks to provide for his son Avery only shot luke because luke had a gun himself Lukes son only becomes bad because he has no dad Avery son only becomes bad because his dad was never around either Avery was never around for his son because he felt guilty about shooting luke All this happens at the pines. The end of the film is not just him leaving the pines physically but also metaphorically because the pines represent all the dark and suffering.
Luke certainly had a choice. He had a choice not to assault her ex-lovers boyfriend. He had a choice in respecting the wishes of others and staying away. Not to suggest those choices were easy. This film is aptly rated. It is not underrated. It is an ‘okay’ drama with some interesting elements. But at the end of the day, this film wasn’t thought-provoking because it didn’t invoke anything about co-parenting and fatherlessness that most people don’t already know. It certainly didn’t help that Luke, an actual degenerate, is framed with an incredibly disproportionate amount of sentimental value. Saying no one had a choice in this film is fantasy. Each character had a choice. This a story of flawed people. But they had agency.
Honestly I see Romina as the true antagonist who caused all the events to unfold because of her complete selfishness and lack of concern for Luke and the relationship between her son and his father.
Absolutely perfect video man! Just watched this movie last night and then watching this helped hammer home the feelings I had from the film. The first how do they connect the father and son "like this" is truly a perfect example.
1:20-1:30 was such a hard hitting experience for me, very prompt attempt at simplifying how we are the product of our parents. Beautiful movie, man. Thanks for passing your knowledge on cinemas. Kudos!!
I love these types of thoughts into films. Subliminal messaging in film is so powerful. Great vid, subscribes. PS Sicario has beautifully crafted mise en scène.
Great analysis. I was very touched by the film, these echo effects show generational relationships, passing on of the same spirit, which is human life. Beautiful story.
Some fun facts about this movie: The Place Beyond the pines literally means Schenectady. Which is where the movie takes place and was filmed in Schenectady NY. I live about 20 minutes away from Schenectady NY. A lot of times this movie feels like art imitating real life and vice versa. After watching the movie, I feel like it's still going. Sure under different circumstances and no lines but you get the idea. I feel as if my life is very similar to this movie sometimes.
Wow, your deconstruction was beautiful and extremely well put together. I love this film and you've truly hammered home what Derek Cianfrance was expressing, thank you
I'm glad to see someone make a video about this great film. Derek Cianfrance was actually one of my uncle's film students his name was Phil Solomon if you Google him he comes right up, he was an art film maker himself and very well known in those circles, he passed away last year. Trey Parker and Matt Stone were also his students at University if Colorado. It was at his memorial I got to meet Derek he is a down to earth nice person. last night theres a HBO miniseries that started made by Cianfrance called I Know This Much is True starring Mark Ruffalo and my mom my uncle's sister got to be an extra in and got to hang out with Mark for a day and she said hes one of the nicest people she ever met. After Derek told him about my uncle's passing this big movie star walked over to my mom a complete stranger and hugged her and told her he was sorry for her loss. I'm not sure what episode it is but it's when one if Mark's characters he plays twins is in a theater seeing the play Charlotte's Web and she is sitting next to him. Anyway I got off subject I love this movie and anyone reading this check out that miniseries it's no doubt going to win awards.
When I watched this movie originally, I thought it was okay, but didn't really understand it. I thought it was going to be like "Drive" on motorcycles, which it wasn't at all. But this video gives me a whole new perspective and now I want to go back and watch it over again. Great job, man. Keep it going.
Thanks! I'm glad I helped you gain new perspective, that's my whole goal with my videos. Definitely watch it again, it gets better on repeat viewings I think.
This was a really touching video. Brought up those same cathartic emotions i felt while watching the film last night. I love your videos like this, like the one on persona! Very nice:)
You know what's the most impressive thing? If you take the three acts and flip them meaning you start with the last and end with the first. It still tells the same story and will be equally compelling and interesting
ryan gosling is so underrated. i mean he is very famous but oftentimes not a lot of people notice how really really good of an actor is he, look at him in the place beyond the pines, blue valentine....
Thank you for this brilliant insight into this film. I needed this. Because I saw it while watching the movie... but not completely clearly, and now, I do.
I watched this one when it was new back in 2013, at 14 years old. Thought it was better than people were giving it credit for back then. I was in my favorite retro video game store / movie spot yesterday, saw it on the shelf, instantly remembered this gem and knew I had to buy and watch it as an adult 💯
The movie was amazing. The entire story line... and now hearing you sum up its meaning gave it a brighter light as to what i was understanding and feeling. Beautifully done. Beautiful Art.
This was incredible. My favorite film that inspired me to go out and make movies. Thank you for reminding me just how incredible this film is, and opening my eyes even more to beauty of it.
Never noticed the dual beginning/ending similarities along with the cage metaphor. One of my favorite films and an underrated masterpiece. This video solidifies that fact. Thank you sir I will have another and another and another.
found your channel from your most recent video on david lynch and twin peaks, its crazy how nearly everything you've based video essays on is stuff i love. i haven't yet watched all of your uploads, but this is definitely your best out of the ones i've seen. you've made me appreciate this film ten times more now.
Great video on the movie which I can’t stop thinking about. In Croatia, the title they chose translates to “Sins of the Father” which I also find very fitting.
Thank you so much for that video. I had noticed a lot of these comparisons but this videos shows a deeper connection between Luke and Jason. This is even more painful. That movie is a masterpiece.
This’ll just be one of those brilliant movies that fell through the cracks and will be lost on everyone except weirdos who maybe want to watch the entire back catalog of a particular director or actor or those who just kinda stumble across it and discover what a fucking masterpiece it is
dont fear, this film will be found and taught in film schools of the future. Just like JS Bach was rediscovered after his death. when the era we live in is gone except the history books, films like this and Moonlight will live on because of the beauty and horror they show. a more tactile look into what it was like for some in this era of time.
So I watched this movie 11/2020, this week & I haven’t been able to get it out of my head! So much that I’m at a point of watching video essays about it & reading up on the director etc, which is not something I’ve ever done. I enjoyed your review very much! I think your interpretation resonated more with my own of the movie with the only exception is I didn’t think think Jason was going to ride off to freedom at the end; to me, he was riding to a similar fate (not necessarily as morbid, but broken) as his dad. I really loved your interpretation of the ice cream dad vs step dad & how the comment “didn’t hit the mark” re: Luke being his father. Watching this made my chest tight again lol & I feel pain each time I see the comparison of Luke riding his motorcycle & Jason riding his bike on the roadway. I’m familiar with those roadways so maybe that added to me feeling that as well. Okay this post has become too long! Thanks again for the review!
I saw this film earlier this week, and can't stop thinking about it. It is indeed underrated, and although the storyline is a biit cheesy/forced at times, it affected me powerfully. I had noticed some of these echoes myself throughout the film, but you pointed out some others, which I found interesting. Thanks for taking the time to make a video about this fine film. Subbed! :P
Hey Thomas , I have a much greater appreciation for this movie after watching your video. I felt kind of left out, not being able to understand y people liked this movie so much. I watched the movie again after watching your video and it had a much more deeper impact on me. Thanks a lot. Subscribed.
This comparison is very smart and delightful! Nowadays it doesn't bother me if the film is underrated. I think these films are deserved for those who really appreciate beautiful stories as in this case.
Thanks Thomas for this, I really enjoyed your thoughts and ideas in this video essay. Loved Place Beyond the Pines and this shed some new interesting light into my perception of the film.
appreciate/thanks! keep up your work like this (or better of course) this type of visual echoes (or mirroring perhaps) also makes that feeling that everything (or at least a large part of scenes) looks somehow familiar. and so this effect appears in a way that the viewer might assume that the story (plot) is "sort of" predictable; meanwhile it's not so predictable. these two aspects work in a parallel, but no too (overly) coherent. basically I mean this in a positive way (of course) and in short it adds somewhat "mindfuck" aspect (although not as usually this term is used, but in general this method works like a "cognitive shaking" or [not malicious] "misleading").
Haven't seen this movie since it released but it was fantastic. Your content makes me want to watch it again. Also I highly recommend the Broken Circle Breakdown(2012) if you haven't seen it yet. Another emotional rollercoaster of a film
This movie was horrifically underrated
It sure was
Im real fucking glad and I hope it stays that way. Its like our little secret gem for all those among us who knows about the movie heheh
So many shitty movies are popular and this one that is so good is almost unknown
Now it's popular and solely because incels have idolized Ryan Gosling. Big shame.
Was it? I remember seeing it just because of all the praise it was getting.
Miguel Angel Tamayo yea man, its such a great film
Just wanted to echo what the other person said. Thanks for this, and well done.
Agreed
When this movie ended I just sat through the whole of the credits in complete silence. I just sat there and thought "that's... Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life"

The comparison between the first and last scenes, literally made my jaw drop. Criminally underrated this movie.
I think Gosling can play a very good Kurt Cobain.
i'm definitely open to seeing that
Hell yeah
Absolutely.
I can see it.
Definitely 1 of the most underrated movies of this decade
Cianfrance is one of the most underlooked & underrated director I've come across. I've loved his work ever since I first saw this film all those years back now. That was beatifull to read, hope you many good years as one rider to another.
The director really got into my head and I couldn't ever understand why. Thanks for explaining, you genius!
Everybody always says Jason breaks the cycle and is free. He ran from his issues and broke his parents hearts
I love that you're talking about a lesser known film and would love to see more of that. Classics are all well and good, but there are already so many essays about them. I think it's important to recognize contemporary artistry and innovation, so I appreciate this. Great job and keep up the good work.

My man, this video is great. “You’re calling him back!”
I randomly downloaded this movie and had an unexplainable effect on me for 2 days. Truly a subtle masterpiece.
I cried so much through the last 50 minutes of this film. I’ve been wanting to watch it ever since I saw it come out but never got around to it. I’m glad I finally watched it. Amazing film and this video is amazing as well! Thank you!
Jeez I got chills when you said.
“To the place beyond the pines”
I think some of the best films are not necessarily the perfect ones but the ones which touch on a beauty and are original. The place beyond the pines is flawed but painfully beautiful.
me and my ex watched this back in 2014. and we were in tears and tears..something about this movie that is simply haunting

I hope Derek Cianfrance watches this. Great video.
I like the way you talk about the movie. Is amazing.
Incredibly powerful movie, very realistic acting and directing. Love it, so well made

And now I shut up
Finally a modern movie that has the balls to tell a story in order
Dude you're filling "Every Frame A Painting" shaped hole in my life. Your work is awesome.
The message i took from it is that all the shit that happened was no ones fault.
Luke only robbed banks to provide for his son
Avery only shot luke because luke had a gun himself
Lukes son only becomes bad because he has no dad
Avery son only becomes bad because his dad was never around either
Avery was never around for his son because he felt guilty about shooting luke
All this happens at the pines. The end of the film is not just him leaving the pines physically but also metaphorically because the pines represent all the dark and suffering.
Deep

This is and always will be my favorite movie but what you did there at the end man i never caught that one holy shit that was beautiful
I love these types of thoughts into films. Subliminal messaging in film is so powerful. Great vid, subscribes. PS Sicario has beautifully crafted mise en scène.
Man that ending. Fantastic.
Great analysis. I was very touched by the film, these echo effects show generational relationships, passing on of the same spirit, which is human life. Beautiful story.
One of the best movies ever..
Some fun facts about this movie:
The Place Beyond the pines literally means Schenectady. Which is where the movie takes place and was filmed in Schenectady NY.
I live about 20 minutes away from Schenectady NY. A lot of times this movie feels like art imitating real life and vice versa. After watching the movie, I feel like it's still going. Wow, your deconstruction was beautiful and extremely well put together. I love this film and you've truly hammered home what Derek Cianfrance was expressing, thank you
Remember my friend inviting me to the theater to watch this, had no idea what is was about,
Ended up being my favorite movie
Well done! Thank you.
Such a strong opening. I was encapsulated from the start of the video.
this is great, well done
When I watched this movie originally, I thought it was okay, but didn't really understand it. I thought it was going to be like "Drive" on motorcycles, which it wasn't at all. This was a really touching video. Brought up those same cathartic emotions i felt while watching the film last night. I love your videos like this, like the one on persona! Very nice:)
One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. All kinds of emotions. Epic👍🏿
Criminally underrated film.
Bruh that conclusion was gas, you musta gotten straight As in English classes lol
You know what's the most impressive thing? If you take the three acts and flip them meaning you start with the last and end with the first. It still tells the same story and will be equally compelling and interesting
Holy shit Cianfrance is a fucking genius. What an underrated movie.
ryan gosling is so underrated. i mean he is very famous but oftentimes not a lot of people notice how really really good of an actor is he, look at him in the place beyond the pines, blue valentine....
Thank you for this brilliant insight into this film. I needed this. Because I saw it while watching the movie... but not completely clearly, and now, I do.
This movie was a joy to watch as a motorcycle rider, beautifull homage to riding 🙏
I watched this one when it was new back in 2013, at 14 years old. Thought it was better than people were giving it credit for back then. I was in my favorite retro video game store / movie spot yesterday, saw it on the shelf, instantly remembered this gem and knew I had to buy and watch it as an adult 💯
This film is one of the most powerful dramas I've seen in years. Really well done.
The movie was amazing. The entire story line... and now hearing you sum up its meaning gave it a brighter light as to what i was understanding and feeling. Beautifully done. Beautiful Art.
Okay. You like Derek Cianfrance? You're my new favorite video essay guy and I also just subbed to your podcast.
Thanks! Cianfrance is definitely one of my top directors.
Great Analysis Thomas, i almost cried at the end.
Luke's legacy lives on with his son
Dude what. How have I been sleeping on your channel for so long? Good shit
The ending gave me goosebumps man. Great fucking job
found your channel from your most recent video on david lynch and twin peaks, its crazy how nearly everything you've based video essays on is stuff i love. i haven't yet watched all of your uploads, but this is definitely your best out of the ones i've seen. you've made me appreciate this film ten times more now.
this was one of the best breakdowns to a film ive ever seen! wonderfully done!
Thanks!
Great video on the movie which I can’t stop thinking about.
In Croatia, the title they chose translates to “Sins of the Father” which I also find very fitting.
So so so underrated.
Thank you so much for that video. I had noticed a lot of these comparisons but this videos shows a deeper connection between Luke and Jason. This is even more painful. That movie is a masterpiece.
Beautiful man.
Thanks :)
This movie is outstandingly beautiful. Your insight is on point. Loved the video. ❤

It didnt fall thru the cracks. Its known n loved. What u want is hypo popularity n adoration.
@@gomezgomez7759 would love for a film as good as this one to be extremely popular and influential. Raises the bar. Cream rises to the top
Just watched it. Already one of my favs.
Favorite movie of all time and I've seen hundreds.
this was so good. the end comparison of the cage and freedom made me relive the sadness of the film all over gg
This video made me appreciate the film a lot more. I knew there was more to it than I could understand after my first viewing, thanks!
Awesome video dude, I remember watching this movie earlier this year and instantly thinking it was amazing and totally underrated
One of my favourite films, and you've helped me understand it further. Thank you. You have a great narrative voice. Keep going.
The film feels poorly made and unfocused upon first viewing...but you have a need to watch it again. Then you realize why. It is haunting. Amazing.
Subbed! :P
Haven't even seen this movie yet, but after watching multible video essays about it i believe its already my favorite movie.
This movie was brilliant from beginning to end and this analysis was great
Hey Thomas , I have a much greater appreciation for this movie after watching your video. I felt kind of left out, not being able to understand y people liked this movie so much. I watched the movie again after watching your video and it had a much more deeper impact on me. Thanks a lot. Subscribed.
Mate.. you slowly ate that filmwith cutlery.
The soundtrack is also awesome, very underrated film.
This comparison is very smart and delightful!
Nowadays it doesn't bother me if the film is underrated. I think these films are deserved for those who really appreciate beautiful stories as in this case.
This is amazing! Makes me want to watch the movie again.
Beautiful analysis and review man, love it!
Thanks Thomas for this, I really enjoyed your thoughts and ideas in this video essay. Loved Place Beyond the Pines and this shed some new interesting light into my perception of the film.
Thank you!
Love your videos. This one made me appreciate this film much more
this movie is amazing honestly
appreciate/thanks! keep up your work like this (or better of course)
this type of visual echoes (or mirroring perhaps) also makes that feeling that everything (or at least a large part of scenes) looks somehow familiar. and so this effect appears in a way that the viewer might assume that the story (plot) is "sort of" predictable; meanwhile it's not so predictable. these two aspects work in a parallel, but no too (overly) coherent. basically I mean this in a positive way (of course) and in short it adds somewhat "mindfuck" aspect (although not as usually this term is used, but in general this method works like a "cognitive shaking" or [not malicious] "misleading").
Really apprexiate the video. Such an a brilliant film
This movie made me cry 😢
Haven't seen this movie since it released but it was fantastic. Your content makes me want to watch it again. Also I highly recommend the Broken Circle Breakdown(2012) if you haven't seen it yet. Another emotional rollercoaster of a film
Ooh, I've heard of that one but I've never watched it. I'll check it out!
Great video! thank you for this.
You're welcome :)
