  • Just a very quick video showing how this simple rocket ignition module works.
    Here is an already made inexpensive single cue ignition system: amzn.to/3ikYZ3c
    My module is 4 years old and no longer made, but here is a similar one I found. goo.gl/Zcncy2 (just keep in mind these are a pain in the billiards to program and dont come with instructions. So a multimeter is a necessity).

    As far as motor igniters go, I have launched many rockets using a simple strike-anywhere wooden match. You simply wrap a fine wire around the head of the match a couple of times and connect it to your ignition system same as you would any other igniter. For most of the hobby motors, the match head is a friction fit and blows back out as soon as the engine ignites. I've never had a failure using this method.

    Aside from this silly comment I must thank you for introducing me to home made rockets, I have had a great time both making them (using the recipe for the fuel from one of your previous video ) and testing nozzle designs which I simply make on a wood lath, so again a big thanks from me and all the people that enjoy your great content!

    @3:09 - the transmitter isn't powerful, but it is 433MHz and it is (public) programmable code.
    I presume you assume nobody else is using the same code you are, or use a much stronger transmitter. - coded yes, though they are limited! Rx circuit doesn't care who transmits, as long as it receives what it is programmed to trigger, it triggers ;ø)
    For the price, wouldn't it be sensible to use 2 or more in series - each with their own code and frequency. This should increase your safety, so somebody else isn't triggering your blast cap by accident while you're near the lift-off site and/or looking straight down the rocket.
    Thanks for providing such informative stuff, it is always interesting to watch - I learn a lot. Best of luck in 2019 :-)

      That would definitely be a great option for increased safety. I've been using three of these units in several different applications for about 5 years now with zero false flags (meaning from some other 433MHz transmitter).

      @@ElementalMaker - now with TH-cam, and your videos - you could have inspired a lot of new-comers, and they're using the same equipment you've linked to, and probably using yourself.
      I have also heard that not all electronics work perfectly, it seems to fail randomly ;-) A series connection is a good thing (2 hand job, if one fails the other keeps going - and you're not exploding all over quite yet)
      Besides, the 'famous last words': I have never before. I respect fireworks and rockets, for a good reason.

      Very good point, just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it wont. Just in case - I always use long ematch leads and never set up the rocket motors hot, always setup the motor/ematch first, and then turn on the unit just so I at least have some distance. Any energetic composition is absolutely demanding of respect.

      The right fuses can be great. American made visco is a tremendously safe product with consistent burn rates and I'd never hesitate to use it. Others on the market can be questionable

    Great video, as always.
    By the way, you could get the continuity check feature pretty easily on your homemade unit:
    Just connect an LED and series resistor across the switch. (I'd recommend 4.7k or 10k to keep the test current low. Modern high-efficiency LEDs might work with a 47k resistor, keeping test current even lower.)

    Has for the oscillating issue, have you tried to use a transistor to juice up and then with résistance and capacitor to aligne your signal in a way more "dc effect" instead of oscillating more ac signal?

    I was making a remote control igniter for fireworks, I used 32 swg nichrome wire supplied with 4volts power. The nichrome wire was heating but not glowing up.. What could be the reason?

    To those that use fuses, I've used visco fuse (purchased at sportsman's Warehouse or Cabellas) wrapped in aluminium duct tape so as to light the center of the propellant. Works great!! Just bend the fuse a little so it stays in the engine as you light it with a propane torch. About 2-3 inches long with 1/8th" exposed at both ends.

    If the relay have a "open contact" you should be able to put a LED+resistor (maybe the e-fuse have enough resistance so you can delete the resistor) with a simple 1.5V battery it can light up the led trough the e-fuse but don not activate the ignition.
    This "mode" have multiple purposes, e-fuse continuity test, Ready/Armed warning and successful e-fuse ignition. The rocket might not ignite but you can be sure the e-fuse metal is melted.

      @@ElementalMaker Thanks my dude. In Spain the chemicals for sugar rockets are ilegal, hard to find or super expensive (probably the rocket itself is ilegal to produce and fly), so you can fulfill my DIY rocket cravings ;)

    Been watching your videos the last couple of days and I'll admit, at first I almost unsubscribed because I felt like you were ripping off AvE by trying to imitate him. But after watching quite a few of your videos, I'm glad I didn't and I apologize for jumping to conclusions. Although, from your moments, speech pattern, and style of videos I can tell that you do imitate him, it's not in a bad way.     Two things (if you watch comments this far back)
    Firstly, to reduce the oscillation you could maybe use two PP9's in parallel?
    Secondly, do you have a link for your commercially made controller?
    I do kind of like the smaller one. It opens the pathway to possibly having the ignition system on board.

    Sweet! I love your videos. Freezing my Kahuna's off here in the West. You're progressing faster than I am in rockets. My Alpha 1Que fire system you recommended doesn't work. Not enough juice. Works for Estes ignitors but not "our" nit tro sell u lose ones. I've been hunting for a better solution. This may be it for awhile. Hope the guy below emails me his plans with his arduino ignition system.

    You could avoid the oscillating problem by just using two battery connectors and batteries, one on IN+/IN- and one on COM/NO - that way the current draw and voltage sag on the battery feeding the match doesn't brown out the one feeding the coil.

    Great idea! If you have trouble with less than fresh batteries, voltage probably isn’t your problem. Why not attach a second battery in parallel (same polarity to the circuit board as the original) to the first?
    This ensures that there will be a full 9 volts available for a much longer time and ample CURRENT to heat up the wire at the flashy end.

      That's certainly a good option. I just prefer the simplicity of just using a single battery. Using a few 18650's in series would surely work a treat as well.

    Nice. Now the next step is to print a housing for that system. You could potentially increase range by changing the antenna on the relay circuit board. Possibly grasping at straws here lol

    So I tried wiring two 9v in parallel and I checked the in(-) and the no with a multimeter (while pressing the button of course) and there’s around 8.5v going through it. But then when I try to connect an igniter, it starts buzzing and there’s only like .15v going through it and I have no clue how to fix this. It might be the way the relay is set up but idk

    What voltage does the relay work on? I was thinking about 2 or 3 18650 lithium batteries for power. They will deliver a lot of power.

    *ElementalMaker* Excellent video! I invent things constantly, just had an idea: a copper plug (about 2x15mm, made to fit in motor tightly) with a copper 15 mm square on the outside end that is painted black. The idea being to aim a high power 1 watt or above laser for ignition from a distance. Alternately a small piece of VISCO fuse with a painted black alligator clip on it. If the laser was aimed correctly and the intracasies worked out, I wonder if this would work? Anyway, great videos-I follow and like all of them.

      Cody of Cody's Lab ignites things in his vacuum chamber with a laser from the outside, IIRC just a sprinkle of black powder is enough.

      Just be very careful working with confined BP... the frequency this operates at is public and there could potentially be a false trigger. The odds are quite low but it is a possibility to keep in mind. I use it for rockets because they are not intended to explode. High quality American visco fuse may be your safest bet.

    At the moment i'm building my own simple fire unit, it has 6 channels for 6 igniters, you may could put 2 igniters in each channel, but i have to test it. It uses bluetooth to connect to a smartphone or another bluetooth module as fire controller.
    Parts List:
    Small plastic box from conrad electronic
    6 channel audio clip(these red/black ones you know what i mean)
    HC08 Bluetooth Module
    Attiny85
    SN7459(?) shift register
    6x Irlz44n mosfet (china fakes, cause getting real ones cheap on ebay is quite difficult)
    A 5V linear regulator (i think its an 7405)
    Some leds, a pushbutton, resistor and some wires
    You can programm different fire modes in the arduino, so it could also work for steppers, and with the button and the leds it has a ematch tester for every channel. I give a feedback if it works, because today i received the bluetooth modules and im still coding and testing with the tiny and the module

      And: the prototype isnt even completed and i'm already thinking on much improvements for more channels, better functions, professional made pcbs (im using perfboard or how its called), maybe a display and the possibility to connect multiple firing systems to one controller

    Idk if anyone’s going to see this since this videos two years old but I’ve been trying to do this and whenever I connect the igniter/e match to the relay and press the button it just starts clicking and nothing happens

      You need a stronger power source, try two of whatever batteries you're using in parallel

    I built a similar one but I used ultracaps to keep the battery voltage up. Stick 10F in there and it wont sag.

      The place I got them from is long out of business, but you can still find similar ones online. Just search for single cue wireless igniter.

      That little guy is just a simple relay. The bard itself has a microcontroller on it and a button that lets you program what mode it is in. I basically just randomly pressed the button till it went into momentary switch mode.

    I agree, electric are a lot more reliable. I would take a match strap some copper wire on it, then hook it up to a broken extension cord to ignite my solid fuel for testing.

    made one using a small atv battery, a remote fob system off a chinese go kart and a standard 5 pin 30 amp relay, whats nice is you can use it to turn on/off any 12 volt device up to 30 amps. also it didnt cost a dime because it was all shit just laying around.

      @@ElementalMaker way better, and more wireless than my system lol. My electrical igniter is just 2 wires that I adapted to attach single broken Christmas lights onto and I just break the glass and sprinkle in some 3Zn+S "flash powder" that ignites when the filaments heat up
