Amiga version is a nice change for fans that have been playing the arcade version for years but the mega drive version is by far the best version of this game. it looks nicer and closer to the arcade it also has 2 player support which the amiga does not and it also has more levels than the arcade original, the arcade has 50 the mega drive has those 50 plus more bonus levels after the 50, do not listen to anyone saying the amiga version is better, its different and its a nice change but mega drive has the best version of snow bros. a classic game
I used to use dinner money for school to play this in a smokey cafe in the village, this Pacland, Double Dragon and P.O.W. Kind of made school bareable.
Ah, those were the days. Buying a cheap portion of chips (Fries for the American English speakers) for 40 pence then spending the rest on a credit or two on the local chippy arcade game.
When I was a kid, I loved this game in the arcades. One day I had to chose between this one and Duck tales choosing the latter. To this day, I used to regret my decision (specially when I got bored of Duck Tales). Now, after watching this video, I know I chose well. Thanks!
toskar I've thought about playing the remake on the 360 but it was never released in japan and the hard copy is region protected. I did own the US disc but could never play it. I sold it to someone in Japan with a J-Taged 360.
Great video! I used to play a fair bit of the arcade version of Snow Bros back in the day simply because I loved the visual of the rolling snowball, and the jumping animation. The things that captivated my 8-year-old brain back then...
This was Toaplan's best known game before the Zero Wing Internet meme was created. It was even on Nick Arcade. Despite being similar to Bubble Bobble, Toaplan was usually associated with Taito, the Bubble Bobble developer. It even got a sequel that was released around the time Toaplan filed for bankruptcy. All the Toaplan staff started as Orca, but after Toaplan filed for bankruptcy, they caused splinter developers to be established, such as Takumi, Raizing/8ing, Gazelle and the well-known Cave Co. Ltd, while former Cave staff also established Tanoshimasu, who is notable for Aka to Blue.
I'd say that from the former Toaplan Raizing/8ing are my favourite. Cave are also great but they lost the plot in the end with all the lolli girls in their games. It became an embarrassment to play them.
The Mega Drive port is amazing! Faithful graphics, improved audio, added cutscenes and extra levels! :D only problem: it's frigging expensive :/ Amiga version seemed promising for an arcade to Amiga port, too bad it wasn't officialy released. But unlike what you said, it's worse than the Mega Drive port, it doesn't have co-op, it has worse backgrounds and no extras.
I think for an Amiga the Amiga port is better due to the hardware. The best port overall though without taking in hardware limitations is probably the Mega Drive as you mentioned.
I see what you mean but when you compare, you compare the final result without anything else into consideration. But for sure, the Amiga version seems particularly good for an arcade to Amiga port.
I remember at the time drooling over how good the Amiga version looked in the preview sections then nothing. What a shame ocean lost the licence. The Amiga always seemed to handle these type of games really well, Rodlands, rainbow islands, quark, rainbow islands, toki etc..
I have it for the Famicom - kinda. it's actually a 4-in-1 cart for the Dendy famiclone. The games are Bubble Dragon, Eyes Man, Snow Bros., Street Fighter. The cartridge, naturally, is compatible with my Nintendo Famicom.
I probably have the arcade version of this game somewhere. I seem to remember bulk buying my friend's entire arcade board stash, and I know he had this for sure.
Thanks. I think I find my MD import cart and use in a future episode of mine. I remember the GB version sucking when I owned it as a child. I always get this series confused for Bonanza Bros. and/or Buster Bros.
You forgot to mention that the Megadrive version has extra levels, finishing the final boss of Arcade starts a whole new game where the princesses have to save the SnowBro. One element that does not have the version Amiga or other.
+Retro Core Yeah, I was surprised when rescuing the princess from the twin stone faces the king demon catches the brothers and the princess had to rescue them into totally new levels.
Snow bros is really a great game. Like Pang and many other, one screen platformers from late 80 and early 90. This is one of my favorite next to Pang or Super Pang. Ah Joe and Mac Returns & Nightmare in the Dark are great games. To bad the din't release a port of SB on Pc Engine.
+SuperWizball A lot of hit games on the Amiga are scrolling ones. The problem with arcade conversions is that they were handled by teams wich specialized on CPU's (68000/Z80...)and usually worked under tight deadlines. Other devs which specialized under specific hardware and had more confortable timetable (or even lack of specific deadline) usually fared better snd went to great lenghts to get most of the machines. That‘s why so many original games on the Amiga are so wonderful.
One of my favs back in the days and till now. I used to finish this on the arcades and I was sad for not having an amiga port. Later, when i upgraded to an A1200 with a 030 I played it on a nes emulator. Great port on nes too. Amiga version is a late one as the project was abandonded and it was released a few years ago. I finshed that too but there is no a two player mode on the amiga :-(
I got this mixed up with Ice Climbers!. Should get one of those 8BitDo bluetooth pads to play mobile games, there great!!! Any plans to do Ikari Warriors?, think there like 14 ports of it
+BlockABoots My phone is compatable with the Sony PS3 sixaxis pads. I actually have one and all the cables but unfortunatly my phone's batery is dead. I won't work without being connected to the mains or USB. The problem with that is that the PS3 pad also needs to connect to the same port as the power :( I have a new battery on the way. Once that arrives I can put the phone back in to it's cradle attached to the PS3 pad.
I remember playing this game in my Fami-clone console back when I was a kid. Retro Core, do you know Chip Chan Kick (CCK) game on NEC PC-FX? Looking at CCK gameplay in TH-cam, it's almost like Snow Bros, but with cute characters. BTW, Amiga port is pretty impressive!
Also liquid kidz was ported by ocean france and not published for the amiga... Remembered now... Where's the weekly battle of ports? I'm itching for it... Carry on the good work!...
If there is only one version that needs to be on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, then it should be the Japanese-only Mega Drive version.
I agree with you, there are still many early arcade classics that Battle of the Ports did not get to explore and I hope that they will be on the horizon at some point! One issue though is that for quite a few, only 8 bit versions will be available or worse there is no Amiga version! (Pole Position, Xevious, etc.) But given US Gold would have gotten the license and commissioned Tiertex to produce it maybe it is actually a good thing. ;)
The FM display "H" and "I" on 10 and 11 lives, never got past those numbers so can't confirm what's next. Also, i don't know if this is related to my copy, but if you press select you can actually play on some timed mode, reaching the end you have a special stage where you need scale platforms and reach the princess. However, in some of those levels names are "Floor 98" or random numbers and graphics start to freak out, did this happen to someone else?
I played the arcade after knowing that Ocean were porting the game to Amiga. I remember enjoying it and hoping for a good conversion. But alas nothing came and I thought that maybe the license agreement fell through... Only recently I played and loved it. Really good material, and would have been hit release - such a shame it wasn't released! Those Ocean france devs were really keen on quality. I remember reading that they run into trouble, m8st of the times, with the main office in London for not delivering on deadlines. AFAIK only dragon ninja and cabal met the release deadlines (SOME SAY THEY WERE FORCED ON THE DEV TEAM). On a side note for a future episode - Rainbow Islands by Graftgold was being developed for firebird before being aquired by Ocean
Yep... But not having a license didn't seem to be an obstacle for Ocean France, because there was an interview in a french games magazine (probably joystick) where it was discussed and even showed some art sketches for the amiga in pencil... And the game is real as it was being talked about... Maybe Ocean UK said it would get the license and then didn't?!...
Amiga port wins! Finally a win for the Amiga! Snow Bros is an amazing game! I enjoy playing the MD version myself and wondered why it was never brought over to the West. I'm sure that it would have done reasonably well in sales considering how popular Bubble Bobble was back in the day!
+segagenesis1989 That is an odd one when it comes to the Mega Drive port. It's something that would have sold quite well in the west I would have thought.
The android version looks terrible, I hate that soft filer look and if you look in the SBS comparison, they even made the background more basic! Why? It hurts my brain.
OMG This game was... Utterly OVERRATED here in Mexico, and NOT joking in the "overrated" aspect, it was so damn played, even some kindergarten kids could 1CC and hi-score this damn thing, it was THAT popular, not sure about nowadays... The result? Well when I was around 6~12 years old (I'm 19 now) I was an owner of some arcades with CPUs booting directly on mame with romsets, this game (And many of the stupid KoF 2002 hacks, amongside other really odd games) were the order of the day, but because I needed to stay there with my father making sure no one was trying to do vandalism or later the arcades were directly in my "garden" and the sound could be perfectly listened inside, I really freak out at some point of this game, listening (especially) to the 2nd World music really almost make me puke, THAT much I had to tolerate this game, it might sound exagerated, but oh man... I don't wish this kind of pain to anyone NEVER. And then when I grew up, I was absurdly surprise the game was made by Toaplan, at first I even tought it was Taito itself (Never checked out the tittle screen until recently) I was a fan of Tatsujin Oh when I was a kid, almost completing the game and loving the SFX and Music. Still this game is still a classic, I might kinda "hate it" for the exact wrong reasons, but still a classic nonetheless, I remember selling even some Repros of the MD Port because it was considered Arcade Perfect by many over here... Also took me by surprise how damn expensive is the original thing.
Oh, I can understand how seeing something over and over again can cause you to hate it. It happened to me with the music group, Oasis. Man, I can't stand them thanks to listening to them in work for months every day.
@@RetroCore Oasis is not even popular over here, well... Could be said "not the actual bands" are the popular ones. As an example, I LOVE Tears for Fears, but listening to "Everybody wants to rule the World" is the exact same history if not worse than Snow Bros. on me, I can't even listen to that song anymore... So glad you actually understand. KoF 2002 is my another example, and some other odd games like "Ichidant-R" clones (Cannot even remember the game lol) and Neo Bomberman are basically the games I don't want to see anymore, I was at times going to the arcades and put some other random games to listen to the demos (I actually discovered some gems by doing that).
Snow Bros was ported to both NES and GB but not to SNES, why? NES port is good and was released also in North American and Europe by Capcom. Well Toaplan wasn't good at porting their games to GB, so they possibly wouldn't have been able to port their games to SNES. Compile would definitely have done great job with SNES porting. Too bad the Mega Drive port wasn't released world-wide, even though it should have been because it's the best port. MD Snow Bros along with MD Zero Wing have the best Toaplan soundtracks thanks to Cube sound driver. Amiga port was huge surprise. I'm glad Ocean France at least cared about developing games properly, while their UK counterpart didn't at all.
definitely goint to try out that android port. and Yakumo do you not have a bluetooth controller for your android device? if not i high reccoment the Power A Moga Pro Power, works with 975 of games and i used and all the emulators and has a 2200 Mah battery built into it so it charges the phone while you play. www.amazon.com/POWER-MOGA-Pro-Electronic-Games-Game/dp/B00FB5RBJM
+stevacus I do have a controller for the phone. My phone is a Sony Xperia which is compatable with te PS3 Sixaxis controller out of the box. The problem is that the Sixaxis needs to be connected to the phone via the same port at the power cable. Now here is the main reason why I never used the pad. My phone's internal battery is dead. It will only last 5 minutes max before switching off. So, I needed to connect the phone to the wall outlet in order to use it meaning it wasn't possible to also connect the pad :(. I have a new battery on the way. Once that's arrived I'll be covering another Android game which will nedd pad controls in a future BOTP.
That's probably the only Gameboy game Toaplan ever made so its not surprising its not the most amazing Gameboy game. To get the most out of limited hardware the first time someone works on it is not realistic.
I disagree here the MD port is easily the best, 20 new levels, extra music themes, great graphics and arguably better music. The amiga port is good for an Amiga port, but doesn't look near as good as the MD, lacks the extra content, lacks co-op and has some lame new music (boss theme ie)
+Marcel Weber Fair comment. Actually I didn't know the MD had extra levels as I've never completed that version. I don't know why you would think the MD version looks better than the Amiga though. It's pretty rough to be honest.
Retro Core Because it's more faithful to the arcade backgrounds, the Amiga backgrounds are often more simplified and with more basic colors. Same with the enemies, the colors and detail is closer to the arcade often.
+Marcel Weber Actually the shadowed and minimizedbackground helps the focus onthe gameplay. The background graphics add nohing to the game itself, and IMHO works best for this amiga version. Also the gfx style is somehow more coherent on the Amiga. As for the extra levels, as the arcade had not is not really fair to compare those. But overall I would say that both version stand on their own feet for diferent reasons. I refer the amiga you prefer the MD - but both are great!
João Ralha I never had problems with the backgrounds in either the arcade or the MD port so i don't see how simpler backgrounds are better. "The background graphics add nohing to the game" They add more detail and colorfulness as it was intended in the arcade, that's enough by me, same goes to enemy sprites. Amiga port is good, but i don't see how it's better than the MD port in any way, not to mention it still lacks co-op and the changed music isn't as good.
The Amiga Snow Bros version use 64 real colors (it's not half bright). This version has more colors than the MD one. The coin-op as well as the MD versions have very low resolution graphics done made on a PC. I have ripped the whole arcade tile set for this game, and those are horrible !
Hey Yakumo who do you follow in the utube/internet gaming community? retronauts happyconsolegamer alphaomegasin giantbombcast allgengamers retrogamingroundup gamesack please give us a list of who you follow. +larrshin shin I follow only Game Sack from your list. I know of the others but don't follow them. Thanks for the kind words about my arcade videos. Seems everone dose that now but yeah, I was doing it way before it was the thing to do :)
Mane, the Mega Drive port is the best port here with cutscenes, better music, and more levels. However, the only theme I am against is the boss theme, which I find OVERRATED. I literally can’t listen to it for 1 second without thinking of AIDS. It’s literally stuck in my head now thanks to a series called “Stocktales” by Sr Pelo (go check it out if you want). This is all just me though, and y’all can disagree.
I don't know, Mark, but to me the Android port looks like it feels almost like one of those cheap Flash remakes you find online. Alas, not very good. Not smooth.

YOu know what's so funny. I've never played Duck Tales or even enjoyed the show. I guess it was much bigger in the states than it was in the UK.
That I do not know but it was big in Spain (I am spanish).

If you still haven't played duck tales, try the PC port of the remastered version. It's a great game
The Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of this game is virtually superior in every way to the original game!
Definitely not graphically. The colour reduction is quite apparent. Other than that, it's arguably the best version of the game.

Was the Amiga a completed product? I had heard it was incomplete.
+enigma776 As far as I'm aware it's complete. You can play right through to the end. The Outro doesn't work on NTSC systems though.
+Retro Core good to know
The Amiga version is just for one player, and the music is awful.
It's a good port? Yes, but Megadrive wins.
I agree the music on the megadrive version sounds really great, the sound effects still rape your ears but no worse than in any other MD game.
How come the Amiga version was never officially released?
License issue.
OMG amiga music is horrible. MD version is a better port IMO.
OMG butthurt fanboy
@jim_crom Be prepared to retract that statement when you beat both the Mega Drive and Amiga versions.
definitely goint to try out that android port. and Yakumo do you not have a bluetooth controller for your android device? if not i high reccoment the Power A Moga Pro Power, works with 975 of games and i used and all the emulators and has a 2200 Mah battery built into it so it charges the phone while you play.
www.amazon.com/POWER-MOGA-Pro-Electronic-Games-Game/dp/B00FB5RBJM
Why was the Amiga version not released? Was it complete or unfinished? If it's as good as you say it is it would have sold like hot cakes!
Basically Ocean who where publishing it didn't have the rights.
@@RetroCore so Ocean was trying to pull a fast one?
That's probably the only Gameboy game Toaplan ever made so its not surprising its not the most amazing Gameboy game. To get the most out of limited hardware the first time someone works on it is not realistic.
You never did an episode on HellFire...
Yep. Just search Battle of the Ports Hellfire. It will be the top result. It was show 134.
Ah. Didnt see it till that one point.
Retro Core
Because it's more faithful to the arcade backgrounds, the Amiga backgrounds are often more simplified and with more basic colors.
João Ralha
I never had problems with the backgrounds in either the arcade or the MD port so i don't see how simpler backgrounds are better.
"The background graphics add nohing to the game"
They add more detail and colorfulness as it was intended in the arcade, that's enough by me, same goes to enemy sprites.
Hey Yakumo who do you follow in the utube/internet gaming community?
retronauts

alphaomegasin
giantbombcast

retrogamingroundup
gamesack
please give us a list of who you follow.
Nobody did japan arcade gorilla arcade videos back then, I loved your old
format, and I would never tell you how to produce content, but you tapped into
something I never seen before.
A song makes you think of AIDS?
@@RetroCore Kinda like that. It came from some video called Stocktales.
I don't know, Mark, but to me the Android port looks like it feels almost like one of those cheap Flash remakes you find online. Alas, not very good. Not smooth.
Maybe the Android version runs better on some devices more than others?
Mega Drive is the best port (Nintendo Switch is shit).
Lol
Nes win.
