This video is not about the Everest avalanche(as it is titled), but the avalanche in Langtang valley in Langtang national park during the Nepal earthquake 2015.
Same earthquake, different avalanche. Langtang Valley is about 100 miles away from Mt Everest and was much closer to the epicenter. As was Kathmandu, which was almost as close as Langtang, just on the opposite side. It caused avalanches/landslides on all of the mountains and absolutely devastated Kathmandu, with over 8000 deaths in the city alone. Rural villages were hit especially hard as there was no way to even get relief supplies to some of them for days bc the roads were destroyed and impassable. But the worst hit, on ratio alone, was Langtang Village. The earthquake forced 40 million tons of rock, ice, and earth down onto the village. It was home to 400 people and many tea houses. Within seconds, over half of the village was dead and every single home and tea house was swept away. There was literally only 1 building left standing bc it had been under the cliff. These hikers were right past Langtang Village and were extremely lucky bc over 40 backpackers were killed as well. In comparison, the avalanche at Mt Everest killed 19 people, out of the hundreds that were there. But we hear about that more bc a lot of rich people were in danger 🙄

If you find yourself buried in an avalanche make some room to breathe then dribble. The direction your spit goes is down. Now you know which was is up :)
This is lazy journalism from Smithsonian Channel. This had nothing to do with the "Everest Avalanche." Everest is a couple of hundred miles to the east of Langtang Valley, where these people were hiking. Langtang was closer to the epicenter and is where the greatest death toll took place when a huge rock/mud slide and avalanche took out the village and killed some 200 people, if I recall correctly. I hiked Langtang Valley back in March, 1990, before it became more of a popular destination to hike. Back then Langtang Village was only 4 or 5 houses, really a hamlet, not a village, and there were very few tea houses along the way and few hikers. I know exactly where these people were hiking when the earthquake struck. They were still at the beginning of the valley, well before the village. I imagine it was extremely dangerous all along that valley as rocks and avalanches would have been falling all over the area. Fortunately, for them they were spared.
Yellow journalism too. It really sucks how so many of these videos use misleading titles, or thumbnail pictures that have nothing to do with the video to lure one into watching a video that stinks like shit. I agree big fail for Smithsonian Channel. Furthurmore, the asshole videographer did not even finish the bloody interview. BTW excellent recap of your experience with that area.

Is it because I referenced "Dragon Ball Z Kai", and insinuated that I watched the show? If so, then yeah, I stayed up really late on Saturday night and watched Adult Swim's Toonami on Cartoon Network.
Tip if you're in the path of an avalanche. Run adjacent to it not parallel to its direction, if possible pending you can't get out of the way find a sturdy tree or tall rock and get behind and hang on for dear life. And worst case scenario if you're caught in the middle of the avalanche and can't get cover do two things. Brace for it cause it's gonna hit you very hard and secondly kick your legs and swing your arms like you are swimming it will help you stay above the snow.
