  • Gear up for another intense chapter in our restoration saga with the Harman Kardon CD401. We've clocked another 8 intensive hours in an effort to breathe new life into this perplexing deck. Deciphering the CD401's mysteries and returning it to its former glory has proven to be no small feat.
    In this Video:
🔩Technical Restorations: Immerse yourself in this laborious journey where we replaced capacitors in the playback and record amplifiers, working to correct playback response for improved performance.
💡 Capacitor Chaos: Delve into the intricacy of rectifying an anomalously layered capacitor configuration found in every electrolytic capacitor of this deck.
🎛 Tuning Troubles: Witness our struggle to tweak the record amplifier, and the bias generator - a seemingly unending battle.
🏳 Partial Victory: While we were able to fix recording for type I tapes, recording for type II and IV remained unsolved, leading to an agreed halt in the restoration process with the owner.
Continuing this challenging restoration journey has been a demanding but intriguing endeavor. Despite some wins, the Harman Kardon CD401 remains partially restored and will continue to tease our electrical problem-solving skills.

Just was looking at the market charts and realized that it is actually market charts and not the deck frequency response, but looks pretty similar 🤣

There is something broken with equalization. Could the mechanical selector switches on the front be faulty? It seems that it doesn't equalize/bias for tapes other than normal.

I have one idea, will check, but this not equalization

Bias frequency off? Or bias waveform distorted?

@@Nakamichi_Service_UK Agree, tape decks require candle lights :)

@@hifirulezzz Modern lighting is TERRIBLE with electronic noise. Makes me want to go back to outlawed incandescent lamps for my shop.
