      I think you should deal with this by having a mental hygiene hobby. Maybe some polar opposite like e.g., wood-turning, or something kinda related like e.g., electronics. Just having a familiar place to escape to and catch a break.

    Yeah, burnout (or lack of drive) is insane, especially because of its creeping nature: sometimes, you don't even realize how deep you are into it until you're there. It is one of my least places to be in mentally, and it's so hard to break out of, too, which only tends to make it worse.

  • @isaacrosa584
    @isaacrosa584 4 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    I totally get this. In college (USA) having to balance academics, extracurriculars, volunteering hours, having a social life, paying rent, stressing about the unstable and unreliable job market post-graduation, and to top it off, finding out how you're going to pay for the life-crushing amount of student loans after graduating, would drive anybody to the brink.

    • @isaacrosa584
      @isaacrosa584 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @paula I'm well aware that going into "real life" is very difficult, especially with everything that is happening right now even more so. However, that shouldn't diminish the seriousness of the problems of someone going through a tough time in college. My comment was never meant to compare the problems of people in different stages of life, or stating that COLLEGE STUDENTS have it better or worse than EVERYBODY ELSE. It was meant to highlight the similarity of the "burnout" that Garnt, Joey, and Connor have experienced to that of someone who's burnt out in college, as many of us have been. Also, is a college student not living in real life? Maybe they had to have a full-time job to support themselves because their parents couldn't help them out financially, or a loved one passed away recently, or they've struggled with depression and can't afford proper mental help. THOSE SOUND LIKE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS, but that's just me.

    • @pennyomega7421

      @paula Oh fuck off with that. Life got way fucking easier after graduating and getting a decent job. In school, it's hard to relax because of all the homework and studying you need to do, especially if you add a 30 hr/wk part time job and an internship into the mix. At least with a job, I can compartmentalize and start actually doing my own shit after 6. Way less stressful.

    MY EXPERIENCE:
    This is one of the most “ME” videos I’ve listened to in a while. I’ve done youtube for 6 years (across a few channels) and barely made it anywhere yet I can relate so much to this. The feeling your always wasting your time creeps into your mind all day everyday. Believe me when I say this, I think about youtube nearly all day everyday. Rather it’s about making a video, or the analytics, not having that needed motivation can put you into a shitty spot. You’ll always feel burnt out, frustrated, anxious to release something new.. Any experience in my life these past years has become a commodity because of this “hobby,” which if anything has taken over my life.. I think I just wanted to have a purpose, and that was to entertain people.. make people feel something with my creative visions and ideas. Im happy with some of the things I made but I know that’s time I’ll never get back.. at the very least I’m glad I was able to inspire a few people to do something they love. NEVER take any wonderful moment for granted and make the best of your life experiences while your here :)

    • @4.0.4
      @4.0.4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ there's no guarantee of anything in life. You gotta put your heart into it because you want to, not because analytics will look good. Just judge your work by your own standards. "Would I watch this if someone else did it? Did I improve?" You gotta judge yourself yes, that's not bad. What's bad is letting other people judge you by way of an unpredictable algorithm and numbers on a screen.

    Yeah, part of this is also the issue of intrinsic motivation (doing something because you want to) vs extrinsic motivation (doing something because of a reward for completing the task). If you start off doing something for an intrinsic motivation, then get an extrinsic motivation added on top, it becomes harder to get the same enjoyment out of it if you take away the extrinsic benefits. In their case, that's the voice saying "can I monetize this?" It's really rough.

      For me it's the fast pace of tech in the industry that burns me out. There's always something new popping out and I feel like I'm being left behind. I mean, I do feel motivated to learn something new from time to time but learning some new form of abstraction is a chore these days. A serverless what now? What the hell is a docker container? You mean monolithic code bases are shit now? Luckily I've since calmed my shit down and realized that I don't have to jump in with everything new and learn the things that really matter.

    With SIU, the Creator of Tower of God, I decided to take a break too from reading it. That was when Tower of God was uploaded on WEBTOON. I figured if he is going to take a break, as a reader I should too so I wouldn’t get antsy about waiting for the next chapter. It sucks that other fans harass creators during their time of rest and reflection. I know the rest of the chapters I haven’t read will still be there when I decide to read again. I want to enjoy the work as much as the creator does. There’s too many people who think someone’s creative work is a transaction rather than an sharing and enjoying similar tastes

I don't know what's wrong or how it started, all I want to do right is watching Anime and sleep.

    The interesting thing is.. Even if you're not pressured to upload super regularly, for some.. if you take a break, maybe people will forget about you, perhaps you won't be promoted or maybe you lose motivation. It's like a multiple fold problem. This is kinda especially why it has to be a passion.
    I am not even a content creator but I like to write things for myself and I get ideas and sometimes I just let them drift on by. I feel like my life is just wasted talent at times.

    • @BirdmanDeuce26
      @BirdmanDeuce26 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nature of The Algorithm™ compounds this; even if you have a decently sized subscriber base who are perfectly fine with you taking a break, if your channel itself does not have constantly uploaded content that is being interacted with (commented on, liked and favourited, etc.) you risk losing The Algorithm's™ attention and getting lost in the noise. The notion of _still_ having to make things _even for your vacation_ would be maddening for me!
      I feel you on the "letting ideas drift/wasted talent" sentiment - still struggle with it sometimes. The best advice I got/learned regarding it was to get out of the mindset of feeling an idea "has" to "become" something in order to be valid. Sometimes an idea won't go anywhere beyond your personal enjoyment and that's ok! What's far more important is you're getting something out of it that you can take to the next attempt, where it simply be the pleasure of doing so, or a new insight that will encourage the next one. We shouldn't be judging ourselves on productivity metrics, especially with regard to the creative arts.

    I’d say it’s when the output of your work doesn’t match the input. Like if you put a lot of work and effort into something day after day after day but if the response doesn’t match it, your effort feels pointless. Like with a job where you do a ton of paperwork and schedule appointments that takes so much effort but then at the end of the month, you’re told that you didn’t do enough. It feels like everything you did was pointless and you lose motivation to keep working.

    Burnout, in other words stress. You push your brain to do the exact same task over and over again, until, like with all such cases, your brain just flips you the bird.
    I'd even wager that the term burnout is apt; It's probably a built-in mechanism of neurochemistry to block overly stressed parts of the brain from functioning to stop from frying itself.

    In my country, as far as I know, burnout is seen as just getting tired so everyone is like "Oh yeah, get some sleep and you'll be fine" and it sucks. I was studying for a French exam on my own bc I didn't realise teachers were still sending us homework during quarantine. My French teacher decided it's enough and she forced me to do the school homework as well. I was studying fine but when I had school homework on top of that, I started feeling like I wasn't making any progress so the last month before the exam I literally didn't study at all.
    The bad thing is that I kept feeling guilty for it bc I thought I was just lazy.

  • @WraxTV
    @WraxTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yeah, I'm currently in burnout myself, and have been through it multiple times with multiple hobbies. I'd define it as the feeling that what was once a great feeling upon completion of a task is replaced with a feeling of nothing. That even if the feedback was a million times greater than it was before, it just doesn't matter to you anymore. You no longer enjoy the process, you no longer gain satisfaction from the result - it's just nothing all around.
    Making hobbies into jobs is almost guaranteed to cause burnout. It was unavoidable for me, due to losing my job thanks to "Tha Varus" meaning the only way to make ends meet was to monetize my hobby. Making your hobby into a job doesn't make you love your job, it just makes you hate your hobby. This has the knock on effect of, when you take a break, you just do nothing because you no longer have a hobby, making you feel even worse.

    That is true of any job where you can set your own hours. I find it is hard to take time off because I am constantly spending my day off thinking about how much money I am losing.

    It's called multi tasking if you can do a lot of stuff at the same time it would be in joyable that all depends on your mental growth if it grows faster it won't need to burn out I think I am just a kid so I don't know the same feeling you do but I think you can do more but it's important to in joy things and when your done you go ultra instinct then

    • @Crustee0
      @Crustee0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wtf did i just read lol. Also burnout isnt that simple, dont say things if you dont understand it

    • @heheboibruh46
      @heheboibruh46 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your not open minded you just simply said it's not that simpl with out understand

    • @heheboibruh46
      @heheboibruh46 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I said to enjoy life in there and do a lot of things after words or at that time nvm... You won't understand

    • @Crustee0
      @Crustee0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bruh what not open minded. From your comments you seem to have no idea about youtuber burnout, and just because you say "enjoying things in life" which is factually correct doesnt mean your argument is correct. Your comment suggest that their mental growth somehow isnt fast enough that they have burnout, which is bold assumption. And whats that shit about ultra instinct

    • @Crustee0
      @Crustee0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also dont have first hand experience of their kind of burnout out cause im not a youtuber, but your comment seems rude (about the mental growth thing) and ridiculous (ultra instinct when talking about burnout? Wtf?)
