  • In this ocean farming video we learn about floating longline shellfish aquaculture in Santa Barbara California. UC Davis Aquaculture takes a boat ride to look at the underwater seafood farming or aquaculture of oysters and mussels grown offshore by Bernard Friedman, Owner of Santa Barbara Mariculture. Bernard grows Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) seeded to a floating longlines and Japanese oysters aka the Pacific oyster and the Miyagi oyster (Magallana gigas) in suspended lantern baskets on the longlines. Longline Vertical farming is also called 3d ocean farming or vertical ocean aquaculture. Santa Barbara Mariculture is also involved in seaweed farming of Giant bladder kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera). Ocean aquaculture or farming of multiple species of sea food, in the same area is called polyculture or integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA).

Low trophic level aquaculture in my opinion as well is the answer! Great video :)

Recent studies are now showing that mussels are the newest superfood especially as a protein!!!!

Good on you Bernard. I would have joined you if the legislation wasn't impossible to get over as a start-up
