    Those "calipers" are a set of sheet metal radius dividers. They're used for layout to scribe circles etc. Thats why the points are removable (to sharpen or replace when they dull). Due to the way they open, they have a very wide range and you can scribe large circles without having the tool be obnoxiously large like a set of straight dividers would have to be.
    Still made and used today, the brand I use is Malco.

    I have always been a big fan of the Craftsman circle H tools. Your resto/clean up was spot on. Nothing fancy just clean, lubed and ready to be used. I do most of my tools like that.

    I have a 1940s hand vice with the British MOD crows foot or arrow mark. This could have been in one Soldiers kit that landed on the beaches on the big push to take back France. It was apart of there kit to help with small repairs. If one vice could talk

    The last 3/8" ratchet is a speed ratchet. Its the perfect ratchet to tighten oilpan bolts and spark plugs. You can spin them in real quick and with a twist of the wrist set the "torque." I have each of those circle H and the speed ratchet in my collection.

    As soon as I saw that paint on the scale I figured it must be the same brand as a postage scale I have..........I just checked mines a 1964 Hanson Postage Scale, I actually keep it in the pantry and use it all the time......Just looked it up, Hanson 1509-A, looks like they made that 1509 model for many years, I'm finding some from the 40s up into the 80s and it looks like they basically remained the same over all those years.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That scale is a BEAST! Super heavy duty! I was shocked at how rugged it felt, especially since most brass scales feel flimsy to me.... Thanks!!!!!

  • @stephenbridges2791
    @stephenbridges2791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The 2 ratchets are simply outstanding. The screwdriver? I have an old Craftsman common screwdriver that is exactly 24 inches long. I always assumed that they intended for you to use it as a pry bar. If the screw was big enough to need a screwdriver that big, it's unlikely you could get enough torque on it. I could be wrong, but; I never used it for anything other than prying. Nice episode, today.

    I'd [probably drownded the 2 with 50/50 till all the crud ran out, wiped them off and stuck them in the tote. NICE and ready to go. Maybe a wire brushing and the 50/50 helps loosen crud up too. Happy the rest of the week and God Bless!

    Hi John, looks like you had a great Jacktown turnout. I was eyeballing a bunch of stuff from the video. Maybe next year. I guess I saved a bunch of money. Nice restoration today. They both came out really great. I have a 1/2 ratchet with the round selector with the small tail. The tail is broken off but it still works. I don’t have any that old. You certainly have a bunch of 50 /50 mixes. I haven’t tried the grease and MM Oil or the ATF/Acetone mix. I’ll have to give them a try. Thanks for the video.

    ScoutCrafter, I just recently restored my Craftsman 1/2 Circle H ratchet. Yes, it’s built like a tank. On my third reassemble attempt, I discovered that the top and bottom plates are interchangeable and the drive gear can be installed upside-down. Also, it’s interesting that the 1/2 drive has the Craftsman nameplate on the “top” along with the selector switch; while the 3/8 drive has the Craftsman nameplate on the “bottom” along with the selector switch.

    When I first began working on my own things, my father-in-law gave me a Craftsman ratchet that had belonged to his dad for many years. It was basically worn out but he never bothered replacing it because it had scuff marks on the handle (people do use cheaters). I took it to Sears. They noticed the scuff marks but they immediately gave me a replacement anyway for that 30 year old ratchet. I was sold on Craftsman tools.

    You might think I'm ready for the padded room, John but the 'after' pic of the craftsman ratchets (my inner photographer tells me) would look great framed on the wall. In an exhibition of 'industry & innovation' it would make a perfect addition to the 'mechanical hand tools' section. Barmy, right?

      Sometimes the spring pops out or is misplaced when re-assembled. It's amazing how simple some are inside. Check out Rich over at Snap Ring Chronicles and look over some of his ratchet tear-downs, he really gives you the confidence to take one apart without hesitation! I just saw he did the same ratchet! th-cam.com/video/b650Nqk6u_8/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks! I watched Rich's video right after I bought it. I happen to have some steel rivets like the one that holds in the selector lever, I think I will drill it out and make a new spring. I am thinking about bushing the shouldered screw at the pivot, also. Always an honor when you reply John!

    Just imagine how long Monday's and Today's videos would be if ScoutCrafter wasn't on the wagon when it comes to buying more tools;)

    That is a fantastic haul, and obtained for a reasonable price. I really wish I had your eye for zooming in on cool tools. After awhile a show like this overwhelms me. But I still would have liked to attend it. Saw some very nice vises there.

    I hate to correct you, but I believe those would be more accurately described as dividers than calipers. They are quite beautiful and the design is very unusual. I don't know if this is the reason, but I have seen that design used repeatedly in a slightly different tool, a pair of golden mean dividers. Typically these have trammel points on both ends representing a linear ratio. But if you want to apply the golden mean ratio to a radius, it appears that this tool would functionally achieve that. Notice that the fulcrum point changes at every setting. I could not be sure without measuring, but it appears that the arc subscribed by the lower leg, it's ratio to the radius inside the eyeball shaped portion is in fact the golden mean. This would also explain why the arc of the legs is not a steady radius, but in fact a logarithmic changing ratio based on length.

    I grew up around Craftman tools, my dad & his dad always bought Craftman tools but they didn't have the last spin type ratchet wrench you showed. Now I'm on a mission to find one. Awesome video.

    Good job and nice items, John. Of course the centering mechanism on the die-holder is no Gimmick. It makes thread cutting a breeze.

    Hello John, could you please a video about grease types (lithium grease, red, greeen grease etc) and the proper use of them?

    I love those ratchets also. Have a few. The only thing that gets me is the Philips head screws??? What were they thinking?? The first one I saw I thought well that can’t be right. But it was haha. Still great ratchets though.

    I've got a couple of those Craftsman V series ratchets, too. Very short lived line and one of the few tools to have an artistic flair. Many Ford, Pontiac and Oldsmobile V8 owners from this period like them because it is similar to their cars logos.

    Great job on the ratchets!!! Those and that spinner ratchet are really cool. Her brand tools was the originate my holder for the spinner. I have an example in my collection. Clear green handles. I’ll shoot ya a pic.

    That caliper is pretty neat, haven't seen one like that before. And that V style speed ratchet looks interesting. I would like to find one cheap just to try it out.
