I had to cancel a test drive of a Niro yesterday due to health issues. Having videos like this are the next best thing and I don't have to leave my home to check them out. They don't replace the test drive experience but they certainly help the prospective buyer get to know the vehicle better. Hybrid technology has come a long way since it debuted. This is the first hybrid I have ever considered purchasing. So kudos to Kia for bringing hybrid technology to those of us who want it to feel like driving a fossil fuel car without the hybrid compromises of the past.
The Niro has made me a convert to hybrids. It’s also the first Kia I’ve owned, and I’m - so far - favorably impressed. Aging, arthritic knees made my previous low-slung car painful to get into and out of. I bought a 4-wheel-drive car as a replacement with higher seating, similar to the Niro in size, but it got mediocre fuel mileage, and proved difficult to drive in traffic with the manual transmission. I’ve driven manual transmissions for 50 years without problems, but this one had a terrible clutch/throttle dynamic that made it very unpleasant to drive in traffic. I traded it in on a 2018 Niro LX after only 10 weeks. I still wanted a higher seat off the ground, and in this category, the other entry that was similarly-sized had a noisy engine and it, too, got mediocre fuel mileage. So, I decided if I had to have a higher seat, and I was going to have to buy an automatic transmission to get it, I might as well look at hybrid vehicles. I test drove the most common hybrid and didn’t like it - too low for my knees on entry and exit, and frankly, not much fun to drive. The Niro was dramatically different, and felt (still feels) like a slightly slower version of the Mazda3 hatchback I used to have. The LX model I bought is nimble and responsive, comfortable for both in-town errands and long road trips, and even though it’s at the low end of the “luxury” scale, it has a nice mix of features - more than I anticipated. There have been zero maintenance issues. Two significant drawbacks as I come up on 6 months of ownership and driving: First, cold weather (I live in Minnesota) brings a noticeable reduction in fuel mileage (about 20-25%). Mine got 44 mpg on a 2,800-mile trip to the Rockies last summer, and averaged almost 50 mpg around town when it was warm outside, but has dropped from high 40s mpg around town to high 30s mpg around town. Still way better than my previous gas-powered cars in the winter, but a steeper decline than I anticipated. Second: dashboard lighting at night is awful. The cluster in front of the driver is in white light, and very bright, which hampers night vision. Turning the dash lights down on that cluster also turns down the brightness of the red lighting used for other dashboard controls, making them so dim they’re nearly impossible to see, and difficult to use as a result. Those are really my only complaints, and if I live long enough to wear out the Niro, I’ll be inclined to look at hybrids first when it’s time for a replacement vehicle.
Do you still have your Niro? If so can you please tell me if you like it? If so or not please tell me. My wife and I are looking to buy the same make and model
Just bought my brand new 2019 Kia Niro EX (not premium.) But I still love it, and not much difference. When I left the dealer it said I was getting 22 mpg, but that is because cars idle. Now I'm over 54 in less then a week (5 days.) Thank you Peter, for everything. Your videos have helped so much in me getting not just a Niro but a Kia.
It's funny because I often do videos where the fuel economy numbers being displayed on the dash are exceptionally high, and I always point out that dealership cars spend time idling and generally display poor mileage, but your experience is typical. Take it home, drive it, and you'll see. Enjoy your new car!
falling in love with this car...i had a prius C but never felt so safe lol....a small SUV that is also hybrid? dream come true. I wish I could go over there and buy the kia from you guys lol
I just bought a 2018 Niro, after going by the dealership for the sole purpose of getting an appraisal on my trade-in to use in negotiations for a Prius. I went on a test drive, and was sold. The things that sold me on the Niro vs. Prius - Has a cool feature for jump starting your regular battery from the hybrid batteries - At 6'4"..... Headroom! And plenty of it - When seats are folded down, the cargo area is flat - More usable cargo space, as the back is more like a wagon (instead of slanted down) - Overall style - doesn't look like a hybrid. - Display details (speedometer, etc) in a normal position behind the steering wheel - Apple & Android compatibility - Premium wheels as an option - Rear window is solid with good visibility (not broken into two like the Prius) - Back seats have more headroom and legroom I'm getting 52 mpg on the Touring trim, which is rated lower than the other trims at 43/46 mpg. I rarely drive in Sport mode, and am very conscious of using feather light pressure on the gas pedal. Sport mode makes it more like a regular car, with more use of the gas engine, and presumably less mpg.
I didn't think that rear visibility was all that bad. In general cars have changed from years past when rear visibility was better, but aerodynamic efficiency and crash safety was worse. The standard back up camera makes rear visibility less of an issue for many customers.
I live all the way in Canton Ohio I saw a Kia Niro for the first time today and I fell in love with it I was leery because I never heard of one and I do doordash so I drive a lot your video just cleared up all of my hesitation thank you I really do mean that they didn't even have a selection there was two on the line both used and I think I'm more happy with their 2018 then the 2020 they were trying to sell me
I would... but we don't see that model very often. The reality is that the base model is a very low volume car, so we stock the higher trim levels. If we get one in stock, I'll do my best to get a video of it. The other catch, is that if the one we get off the truck is a sold unit, I tend to not do videos of those cars without the owner's permission.
I would agree that this is one of the BEST dealership reviews of a vehicle but if you really want to see the most comprehensive automotive reviews available on-line, check out "Alex on Autos" website. He has reviews on both the Hybrid Niro and the PHEV version. Alex ALSO knows the competition with the Pros & Cons of various vehicles within any given category. His reviews are lengthy but worth the time investment when one is considering spending this much money.
We do videos here based on what we have in stock. We have only ever had one base model in stock. Most of our customers want the mid level to higher trim levels. If we get a base model back in stock, I'll do a video on it.
This is a fantastic video, thanks for showing this really intriguing car. I would like to know how well would 5 people fit in it (3 adults, 1 kid with a seat belt and 1 kid with a booster).
Great question. Usually I don't recommend 5 seater cars if you are always taking 5 people. You could certainly fit 5 people. If fuel economy is your number one concern, I would say, check it out! From personal experience, as kids grow up, sometimes its nice to have just a little more room.
So how reliable is the transmission on these compared to Toyota’s eCVT? I understand they use a 6 speed auto with a dual clutch, mated to an electric motor between the engine.
Question... the 2017 touring interior has blue accents around the vents and is great two tones and blue sticking on the leather seats... does the 2018 touring also have that interior layout? Or is it possible to get that without it being a plug in?
Wondering if you know why the cargo has a max load limit of 130lbs. I saw this in the Car Gurus video review on You Tube amd on another video, both of them from America He said he had never see that before and has sent an inquiry to Kia, but has not heard back yet. Is this weight limit for all Kia Niro`? or Just american models? Thanks
I took a look at a Niro in stock here. The cargo tray itself does have a label that says that it can support 130 lbs, and there is some under floor storage. That panel is supported by the Styrofoam walls of that under floor storage. Personally I wouldn't worry about evenly distributing weight over that panel however if you needed to store something heavier, if you had concerns, you could lift that panel. The car can handle the weight, the panel itself is what has the label.
I'm not sure of that. I would assume that it would be similar to a regular car. The battery is inside the car underneath the rear seat, but there are electrical components around the vehicle and the gasoline engine that can't get flooded. I'm not even sure where to look this up. I'm sorry.
I've had a number of these types of questions lately. It seems like more and more people are looking to camp in their cars. I find these questions difficult to answer. Can you? Yes. Will you be comfortable? I'm not sure how I can judge that. I've gone motorcycle camping, and slept on the ground. My boss would want a hotel to be comfortable. The best thing to do is to stop by your local dealer and see for yourself.
Great video, thank you!!! I own a 2013 Kia Soul+. Hopefully, next year I will be able to give it to my son who is turning 16 this summer and I am looking at the Kia Niro. Though I love your video, one of the aspects that do draw me to the Niro is the integrated technology. Your video and others on TH-cam basically take about Apple compatibility and there are a lot of Android users out here. I'm one of the really weird people out there that use an Android phone, but I have several Apple items also. So, it would be nice to know if like my iPad, iPod, and Samsung Galaxy s8+ will work together over Bluetooth technology. Other than that, great video.
Hi Veronica! To answer your question, all of those devices should work over Bluetooth, but only the Android and Apple cell phones will work with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Here is a link to our CarPlay video: th-cam.com/video/HbQTNcdXoco/w-d-xo.html&t and here is a link to our Android Auto video: th-cam.com/video/I8YnLllFVqo/w-d-xo.html -- I hope this helps!
Great video. Thank you. You mentioned a few times it is a hybrid, but what is the uaage on 100km? I drive daily approx. 25km- will it use only battery or how does the hybrid work? When is the niro phev expected?
So the Hybrid always blends the electric motor and gasoline engine to achieve such great mileage. It is capable of running on purely electric, and a computer decides when that happens. This car never has to be plugged in. If you're looking to run purely on electric for about 25 kms, then the PHEV Niro is the one for you. We expect it out sometime this summer.
Brantford Kia Just saw in a few statistics that it runs approx 5.2l-6.5l per 100km real life use, which is good. Q1. What is the estimated price of the niro phev ballparkish? Q2. These short sighted individuals would rather spend tax payer dollars on rising disaster relief expenses and increased hospital visits due to mounting respiratory incidents caused by prevailing air pollution. Since Ontario has scrapped "Cap & Trade", the rebate program for PHEVs is being killed. As a result, Kia Canada has decided NOT to bring the Niro PHEV to Ontario at all. They can sell all they can make elsewhere in jurisdictions which actually understand the future. I too was awaiting that particular vehicle but after hearing this sad news, I picked up a Hybrid Niro Touring instead on a four year lease. By that time, Ontario will have had another election and there's a good chance this government will be tossed out. Plus the electric vehicle revolution is moving so fast now, there will be all kinds of choices in four years.

Hey Peter, I know for the 2017 model of the Niro there were some recalls. Would you recommend buying a used 2017 Kia Niro under 50k miles? What's the life expectancy of the Electric motor? Thanks :)
Great question, but some of that is going to be impossible for me to answer. Would I recommend buying a 2017 Kia Niro? Absolutely. Consumer reports called the Niro the most reliable vehicle that you can buy in the first year of release. As far as the life expectancy of the electric motor, that's a tougher one to predict. No auto manufacturer list a life expectancy for any aspect of their vehicles. I can tell you that Hybrids as a class are among the most reliable vehicles on the road, and often outperform gasoline vehicles when it comes to reliability. In short, I'd buy a Niro, new or used, as long as you take it to a reputable mechanic to check the usual things that you would check when purchasing any used vehicle. I hope that helps a little bit.
It's probably just a little bit lower than the Sportage, similar to the Soul. The seats are height adjustable so it's worth trying for yourself to see if they work for you.
We're looking at doing that for our videos. There are a lot of great test drive videos online, but less great walkarounds. We have to see if the time it takes to put those videos together will justify the views it will get.
Soooo... you're saying that's a bad thing? I'm kidding. We try to do our best with these videos, some are better than others. Thanks for your feedback.

I want one but I only have $100. Lol
That's a start!
What is the seat height compared to the Sol or Sportage?
It's probably just a little bit lower than the Sportage, similar to the Soul. The seats are height adjustable so it's worth trying for yourself to see if they work for you.
You should drive it!
We're looking at doing that for our videos. There are a lot of great test drive videos online, but less great walkarounds. We have to see if the time it takes to put those videos together will justify the views it will get.
WOW Didn't show the Engine and No test drive, WTF 🤣🤣🤣 Hey Boss this guy no more videos
Want a test drive? Stop by our dealer! You can take one!
I didn't see anything interesting in this video its all about you talking, no interior no walk around or even start up... Just you
Soooo... you're saying that's a bad thing? I'm kidding. We try to do our best with these videos, some are better than others. Thanks for your feedback.
Hi Peter, I sell Kia's. Do you mind if I use your videos?
P.S. I am in the Niagara Region so we are not competing for business
We just sold a car to someone from the Niagara region recently, so feel free to keep using our videos. :)
