Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! The performance here is from 1982 when Billy was promoting his The Nylon Curtain album.
He had recently recovered from a motorcycle accident at the time after a car had run into him, resulting in a broken wrist on one hand and broken thumb on the other, where he had to have the bone removed from the tip and needed it taped up to support it, which is why he was shaking out his hand at times.
Richie Cannata played saxophone on the studio recording of this song, but he had left Billy's band by the time of this concert and was replaced by Mark Rivera who was the newbie band member here, but is now the only one from this performance who is still in Billy's band.
Great history lesson. I've been do diving in Billy this weekend and this is new info. I grew up in him and like Italian restaurant I'm picking up on an old friend🎶

Billy is the greatest natural resource Long Island ever had. It makes me proud to be a Long Islander. If you are, you know that you were brought up on Billy right from the womb. He's incredible.

An amazing song that really evokes meeting an old friend in “our Italian restaurant” and then reminiscing about their younger days and news about the people who were once important in their lives. An amazingly evocative song.

He is a master storyteller. This album is one of my all time favorites. Such great instrumentation! I highly recommend checking out his stuff. A real artist and musician. 👌🏼

I saw Billy Joel live and he knows how to throw a concert.
This show was from 1982. A few months before he had a horrific motorcycle accident that crushed his thumb on his left hand and destroyed his wrist on his right. That’s why his hand was cramping up. The sax player in the video is Mark Rivera (Richie played on the album and left the band in 81). 40 years later and Mark is still his sax player. Saw them in January. Great as ever. I saw them earlier this month in Orlando. It’s hard to fathom how someone can give such an awesome performance at 72 years old

I’ve had tickets to see Billy Joel since 2019, but it kept getting postponed due to Covid! Hopefully this summer it will happen! Next to Queen, Billy Joel is my next favorite!

I laughed when you said that about BJ. He IS the piano man! He literally wrote the song, "Piano Man" about his life; it was one of his first hits. You should check it out! If you like the sax so much you'll get a lot of it from this guy. May I recommend, "New York State of Mind."

Great reaction! A few notes... you mentioned Billy shaking his hands... He actually had a really bad motorcycle accident earlier in the year where he badly injured his wrists and hands... he was still recovering when he finished recording and ultimately touring The Nylon Curtain album there in 1982.

Dereck!!! Where's this going? What's next? Brilliant comments. There are a LOT of Billy Joel pieces I call "pieces," because calling them songs is almost insulting. He does a lot of this where he's not afraid to put together what might be three songs for another writer. And the thing is he not only wrote the music, but he wrote the lyrics, sings the song like that's all he does, and he plays the piano better than other artists who are considered good piano players. I don't know anyone who outplays Joel.

Try and find some footage of the Billy Joel-Elton John shows (The Face to Face tour). Pretty insane.

🤗 1973/4-1979/80 I went to ALOT of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs on "The Island" 😉 and I bet 1/2 the audience had memories of him being the entertainment aka "The Piano Man everyone hired" for their kids. 🤔 That also explains some of the lines in his song 'Only The Good Die Young'! 😂 I knew ALOT of those "Catholic Girls" he talks about. By 1982 after The Stranger Album Tour & SNL + American Bandstand performances, it was no more Local Clubs on the Island, Grad Parties or Bar/Bat Mitzvahs for the Piano Man. 🤷🏿♀️ Same with Bruce Springsteen on the real Jersey Shore he be singing about. 😒 Not that fake MTV crap. After 'Dancing in The Dark', no more Local Jersey Juke Joints. 😁 Glad you enjoy Billy. ☺️🐰
