Love these vids, my dad was a Tank & APC driver in the army in the early 70s. I have a (growing - up to 13 now!) collection of 1:16 RC Taigen Tanks, so they're in my blood. Keep them coming.
It exists as a testament to how cool of stuff we could make, if we weren’t bound by whether or not it would actually be good for the job. Same as the Maus.
Thanks for this video best out there. The British A39 Tortoise was surprisingly reliable and packed a powerful punch to help breech axis defensive positions.
I'm fascinated by the belief systems involved in the development of tanks during World War 2. As Cutland said, the Tortoise was built around outdated ideas held in an almost fanatical fashion by the military men who supported the development of the Tortoise. Something similar can be seen in the US Army of the period, with the development of heavy tanks like the Pershing and experimental versions like the "super Pershing" held up by the devotees of the American tank destroyer doctrine - which had been designed around a misapprehension of the German blitzkrieg. Missteps in military history are often more enlightening to study than the successes.
For those who haven't been to Bovington, treat yourself. The Tortoise in real life is absolutely enormous, it doesn't fully come across in the video. It's amazing it can even move.

The Ordnance QF 32-pounder 96 mm gun was developed from the QF 3.7 inch AA gun.Considering the size and mass of the Tortoise,I'wonder,if it have gone into service, whether it could have been used as a platform for a larger gun ,developed from, say.the QF 4.5-inch Mk IV naval AA gun. Arguments in favour of the 3.7 in gun are a quicker rate of fire than the 4.5 in gun and superior logistics ,in terms of a ready supply of shells However, given the immense difficulty of transporting such a massive vehicle from one location to another, these would have been relatively minor issues.
Hey Mr.Challenger, I was really hoping if you could go to Britain and look at the amazing prototype of the FV4202. It looks amazing and resembles modern battle tanks.

Hello Richard, nice video. You mentioned Churchill tanks having an unreliable engine - was the Meteor ever fitted, or was it just not available because it was so much in demand elsewhere? Also, if the meteor was a non supercharged merlin, why was this engine not used given the enormous power increase if would have given? I guess heat and cooling would be an issue but surely not insurmountable?
SuperBobbster I'm no expert but a bit of engineering knowledge tells me two things- 1. Aircraft engines were very highly tuned, with short lifetimes, like race cars. Down rating allows better reliability for workhorse requirements like ground vehicles. Heat certainly is an issue, as tanks clearly don't have the luxury of 300mph airflow to help cooling. 2. Merlin engine superchargers were, by and large, optimised for maximum efficiency at altitude (say, 3000-6000m).
hey man I Love all of your vid but do you think you can do one with the StuG? I would also love to see some American and French tank as well if possible
I think that, the reason the british had 2 classification of tank one of which is the infantry tank, they still believe trench warfare would've been very common in the battlefield, in that sense, maneuverability and cover is not something common you'd see there so the most important part is to escort infantry to the enemy lines.
