Geoffrey Rush a triple crown actor, the first actor who won an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, a SAG and a Critic's Choice award for a single performance, and even like that I feel that he's an underrated actor!!!
+bosentica hahah i know, but just because you had said "triple crown actor" and then went on to mention that he had won an oscar and such& left out a Tony, I thought you were unaware of his Tony win. For whatever reason, haha. My mistake.
I mentioned the Oscar to make clear that he was the first to won that price, along with the BAFTA, the Golden Globe, the SAG and the Critic's Choice for the same performance. Look, here's more information: www.gutenberg.us/articles/List_of_actors_who_won_the_Academy,_BAFTA,_Golden_Globe,_SAG,_and_Critic's_Choice_Award_for_a_single_performance
He will always be Hector Barbossa for me . I love all his movies and he brings magic to all his roles but I believe the reason why he's so good as Barbossa is because he actually was a pirate in a past life
An incredibly naturally gifted actor.. just watch The King's Speech for a glimpse of his beaming talent. Colin Firth wouldn't have even been nominated for an Oscar had it not been for the wonderful acting support of Geoffrey.
Colin Firth would have been nominated either way because his performance was simply brilliant. Geoffrey was amazing in it too but to say that Colin wouldn't have been nominated without him is absolutely undermining Colin's wonderful and beautiful acting.
All those nominees were great, but Geoffrey Rush really shined (no pun intended) in his performance, an award well-deserved! I also quite liked Ralph Fiennes and Billy Bob Thornton in The English Patient and Sling Blade, '96 was an awesome year for movies.
This is a bittersweet moment for me because I adore Ralph Fiennes and I would have loved to see him win for the English Patient but I'm happy for Geoffrey Rush who I also love as an actor. I haven't seen shine but I loved him in Quills and The King's speech
Awesome moment for every Australian. I thought Ralph Fiennes would win that prize before I saw the SHINE. This is really a good movie and Geoffrey did so incredible by acting David Helfgott. I've seen a short video about the real David Helfgott after I saw the shine, but I thought that person is the actor who was imitating Geoffrey! BTW, this movie makes me know and love the Rachmaninoff Piano concerto No.3 and No.2.
Had the privilege of seeing a wonderful classic play on Broadway called EXIT THE KING in 2009. It starred SUSAN SARANDON (in a RARE stage role) and GEOFFREY RUSH who was simply mesmerizing and electric in the title role and he went on to win the Best Actor in a Play TONY award for that performance. Never realized she presented him with an Oscar 15 years earlier for an equally great performance in SHINE. The hardest roles for an actor to play credibly are drunks and handicapped people. GEOFFREY RUSH can do both magnificently.
Great year for this category. I'd only add Mel Gibson in "Ransom" and Matthew McConaughey in "A Time to Kill" but Rush deserved this Oscar. No debate here
There's no way in hell Geoffrey Rush deserved the award for SHINE. The kid who played the younger David carried that entire movie and character. Then, 30 minutes to the end, Geoffrey comes in and gets placed as the Best Actor Nominee/Winner. AND he didn't even thank the kid.
Brilliant actor who so deserved this honor! I remember seeing this movie in the theater and saying to the person I was with that Rush should start composing his speech for when he won the Oscar for this role.
to be honest, i'd never heard of this actor and therefore i haven't seen the film he won the oscar for, but i do want to say that Ralph Fiennes was absolutely stunning in the English patient. not only the character he portrayed was fascinating, but also did he an exceptional job. i cannot even thing about the process he went through and the whole make up - transformation journey. nothing but respect for him.
That was a tough category as all of those actors did an outstanding job in their individual movie roles. Rush did an excellent job portraying David Helfgott in "Shine".
I was always impressed by how well Tom Cruise took losing this Oscar. After all, I seem to recall that he was the favorite going into the Oscars. I'm not a fan of his, but I was struck by his class. If he was faking it, then he really did deserve that Oscar.
Just watched the movie and i gotta say that even though i haven't seen the rest of the nominated movies, I was completely overwhelmed by Geoffrey's performance in Shine!!! Well Done indeed
Thanks for posting this. This was the first time I'd ever heard of Geoffrey Rush, and his speech and the preceding movie clip (not included) made a lasting impression on me. Now I finally remember why I was watching so closely--because I was originally rooting for Ralph Fiennes. Geoffrey definitely deserved the win (and at least few others as well). Here's to the next one!
Tom Cruise was mesmerizing in Jerry Maguire, robbed beyond belief. Rush is fantastic and should have won for Quills, better performance and less competition.
Have 28 years passed by so quickly from when I 1st saw this on tv... Great movies...all of them.. Well deserved Oscar for Geoffrey Rush that year in 1996. Shine and The Kings Speech were fantastic movies !
Jared Wignall ewan was great, this was a tough year. The nomination was stacked with great films and great performances, but I have to say Geoffrey rush put forth the best with shine, and completely deserved to win after eating shit as a nobody actor in australia for over a decade. The producers of this film did not want to give rush the part and the director had to basically threaten to quit the project unless rush was offered the part. Against insurmountable odds rush gave the performance of a career, shut up all the critics, and did it all with style grace and humility. So like, you can have your opinion and I'll have mine.
Kevin As much as I sympathise with Rush, it’s not about who deserves it the most, a lot of actors and actresses do. It’s about who gives the best performances and in my opinion that was Ewan. But as Sick Boy would say “that means fuck all, it’s a sympathy vote”.
Tom Cruise was great in Magnolia and should have won, whatever year that was. But you can see the look on the other nominees faces here, they are ok with Rush winning. Shine is still an underrated film that not many people watch these days.
In my opinion, Rush should have gotten nominated for Frida (2002) in the Best Supporting Actor category and in Pirates of the Caribbean (2003). He was incredible in both films. Of course, he's great in everything.
I SO disagree with the comments about the "slim pickin's" that year. Fiennes and Woody were great! But Geoffrey Rush was AMAZING as was the film. Recently saw this on cable several times.. over and over... the mark of a truly great film, when you can see something repeatedly and always make a new discovery. EVERY time I see the scene of his humble comeback toward the end and Rush sobs during the applause, I sob with him. What a victory for Helfgott..and for the BRILLIANT G. Rush! LOVE IT!
back when they made so many good movies, it was hard to choose a winner. nowadays, the movies nominated are about the only ones that deserve some attention.
He was great, but Geoffrey also learnt some really hard piano pieces so that he could pull of a realistic performance. Its not easy learning a David Helfgott piece.
Oook ... Rush was reaaally good ..!! But Thornton was *unbelievable*, his performance as Karl Childers was *stunning*, he was *great* !! As far as I'm concerned Billy Bob Thornton deserved it more than Rush !!! "I rest my Case, umm hmm" !!!
All the performances that year were great, but Geoffrey was amazing as David Helfgott. I'm surprised I was able to understand what he was saying considering how fast he spoke.
he is just great no more no less. in all his movies. Oh you play that Symphony No. 3 is killing me. This is too much to handle from the great Rachmaninov.
No politics. No message-pushing. Only a man accepting his award and thanking the people that helped him to achieve it. Oh yea, and back then Oscar rating numbers were like 30 times what they score nowadays. I wonder why....
@@sliat1981 That's false. He deserved it. Jerry Maguire was a dynamic character: He was desperate,sad,positive,love-struck and a little crazy. Cruise did a great job of embodying him. Great perfromance.
As an Australian I naturally love Geoffrey Rush, pretty much anything he touches turns to gold. But after seeing The English Patient just last night, I'm sorry but this was Ralph Fiennes oscar.
My favorite line from him is “It sure is a funky old house ain’t it.” I love that from Geoffrey. If you guys are wondering that’s from House on Haunted Hill.
Geoffrey Rush a triple crown actor, the first actor who won an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, a SAG and a Critic's Choice award for a single performance, and even like that I feel that he's an underrated actor!!!
bosentica and a tony, just recently
nicole That's what a Triple Crown actor means: An actor who had won an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony.

Most recently Julianne Moore, J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette have achieved that.
I can not imagine pirates of the Caribbean without this actor
They have to bring him back (we never saw him die anyway), you're right it will feel like a hole in the franchise.
He will always be Hector Barbossa for me . I love all his movies and he brings magic to all his roles but I believe the reason why he's so good as Barbossa is because he actually was a pirate in a past life
