In this video I give you a quick overview of the "RepeaterID" a new device designed for the Retevis RT97s GMRS Repeater, the RT97s Ham & DMR repeater and the Midland MXR10 portable GMRS repeater. This device will allow your Retevis repeater to automatically transmit a pre-recorded identification message every 15 minutes for GMRS repeaters or every 10 minutes for ham repeaters, as required by the FCC.

Randy: Excellent. I'm considering assembling my own local area GMRS repeater. If you have 25 watts out of the duplexer that's feeding a reasonable gain antenna that's mounted up at 40-60 feet with even a small relative gain of, say 3 dB (AKA double the power) you now have an ERP of 50 watts. The duplexer loss has just been nullified by the relative antenna gain. That's why a good antenna will net you more bang for the buck than electronics in the shack - DUH! Even 10 watts with a clear view of the coverage area is plenty of power to cover your local community which, I believe, is the intended purpose of GMRS. Keep posting your practical videos. I'm glad your cant' work coax is working. BTW, who needs expensive heliax for a local repeater? Just buy a good antenna.

Got one coming soon. Not much GMRS around my place and use my hopped up 97S as a private repeater but going to give this a try because I'm someone.
I remember Comm. Specialists having a similar unit with 'flying leads', back in the day, albeit theirs was strictly the dots & dashes thing. This is definitely an improvement, with sound recordings.

Nice. there’s a guy that made one a while ago an sells it. His has alittle more functionality, it does ID, date, time, weather, weather alerts and zello/ gmrs live. Cool to see people innovating in the gmrs world
Is that the ID-O-Matic? Saw that but skipped it because it requires computer connection. RepeaterID appears to be standalone
i like the ID that you stored on the device station 51 calling alarm tone from emergency i should do that on my new england GMRS node when it's set to ID every 15 minutes no matter if there was activity or not where it's basically a crontab schedule command to play the ID file at that time

I don’t know if you have already have made a video on this or not, but if not you should make a video comparing different mobile GMRS repeaters and what is unique and different between each one that you showcase in your video. To note by stating you should is not demanding that you do so but just a suggestion since in one of your videos you did state you’re running out of GMRS radios to show case because you’ve covered just about all of the modern ones, but wait what about the vintage ones too before GMRS became cool and popular, and the chicks started digging us GMRS guys, there’s another option for you too.

Welp, I imagine I’ll be buying one of these. I am curious how robust that enclosure is - the cover looked like it popped off pretty easily. This is probably out of reach, but even being water-resistant would be great.

I noticed someone running 2 4' radio antenna mounted on a jeep. When i asked them about it they said it was memphis. What is memphis radio?
Just one correction. That will work on the GMRS repeater RT97S and NOT on the RT97 as it does not have the DB9 port. Your title is misleading.
The “ID Now” button I feel should be accessible from the outside, but it’s a nice tool nonetheless.
Question related to GMRS range - do you have any top recommendations for BAOFENG UV5G Plus antennas? I’m wanting to try an antenna before I try a repeater. Assuming terrain is good. I cannot for the life of me find an opinion on this. My brother lives about 7 miles away with the same radio.
My recommendation is to ask this question on a video about the UV-5GPlus, instead of on a video that has nothing to do with, and is totally unrelated to antennas or the UV5GPlus.

No.
Does it need the USB power while running, or is that port just for the upload?
Yes, it requires power but I believe the shipping production will have a power adapter that connects to the repeater's power plug.
Wonder if it goes silent after the conversation end and last required ID. My station is on solar power. Thanks...
It's one of the switch options, the support section of the website mentions one of the dip switches setting whether the device will ID during repeater inactivity.

Why does the RT97 cost more the RT97S if the 97S is a new model?
If I get one of these, and I am looking at them... my inner ham is going to want me to mod it to put the ID module inside the case. I would not want any dongles floppin' about.

Doctor Randy, your videos are completely Awesomeness (a real word in the Republic of Texas), I got tired of trying to decipher the other guyses physics trigonometry laced explanations like thermodynamics, if you ever need to leave the granola state, move to The Republic of Texas, Texas needs more ex-pats from the granola state (although good people no blue types of people) there are many people like you that have escaped the now blue place you live in
Why does a repeater need to broadcast a call sign? Where does one get said call sign for a repeater?
Here in the US a repeater, whether ham or GMRS, is considered a station by the FCC and has to identify every so often when it is on the air. For the ham side it is every 10 minutes and for the GMRS side I cannot remember if it is 10 minutes or 15 minutes. Anyone with a ham license or a GMRS license can set up their own repeater using their callsign. Pretty much all GMRS repeaters here in the US are tied to an individual callsign. The majority of ham repeaters here in the US are tied to a club callsign because they are operated by a ham radio club.

Most people disagree, but for those that insist you can just record the morse-code ID and put it on this because Retevis has made it clear they have no interest in accommodating this feature, no matter how strongly you think they should.
