I think I'm going to miss the ease of split screen ease of use, but I think I only really use split screen a fraction of the time. I do just get the feeling that pixel is just a better supported phone. I love my duo 2,but I always feel like Microsoft's step child
I really don't think people understand just how much Microsoft invested in the software front on Duo, especially considering that Android still sees it as one large screen. Even though its "one screen" Microsoft's launcher knows to split that down the middle, and depending on which side you tap on an application it will just open it on that side. Yeah, it does sound simple on paper, yet why is every company aside from Microsoft getting this wrong?
Good video, Shane. Microsoft really hit a homerun as far as multi-tasking goes with the Duo 2. Hopefully they'll have Duo 3 operate the exact same way. Duo looks so much easier and simpler to multi-task on compared to the Pixel. I was surprised! Keep the comparison videos coming and thanks again.
MS, already patent a single foldable screen. You can SEARCH it and you'll see the patent. So, hopefully they'll put it all together and release another phone.@@CAPUT-rh2cm
I just got my Pixel Fold. You can disable android gestures and have the "old" school Android navigation (3 buttons). This allows you to go into multi tasking much easier as your app drawer can be always present, click on one app, open draw, drag second app. 3 steps total. Surface duo has 2 steps if your apps are on the home screen but 3 steps if the app is not. So it's just as fast.
looking forward to getting the Pixel Fold. Still use my Duo 1 for work, but stopped using my fold 3 as my daily personal. Switched to S23 Ultra. The cover screen isn't good enough. I have not seen the side by side comparision between the cover screen on the Pixel Fold and the Duo folded until now. I actually like the size of the Duo, but was impressed about how the Pixel Fold's cover screen is smaller, but at the same time feels like the right size. Please keep these types of videos coming!! Most other reviewers will review it once and move on, unlike you Shane.
The Surface Duo (1) for me is the best tablet that exists. It does multitasking soo well. It is like a mini two screen laptop. I use this thing soo much on the plane as I have to travel quite a lot. I look at my email, some downloaded documents, etc. I can also do a day without my laptop due to the versatility of the Duo. Same use case as people use a tablet for. My fold4 is the perfect true phone for me. Concerning the Google Fold, I would miss the pen input. That is exactly what I miss on my MacBook compared to my Surface Go3. If Microsoft would build a Duo wit a slightly bigger screens which runs Windows 11 would be perfect. I also know a nice name for this one, Suface Neo? ;)
I love my Duo 2, I just wish it had a screen on the outside. Doesn't even have to be a big one like on the Pixel Fold, just a small one good enough for music, navigation, or notifications and my SD2 would be perfect.
Problem is it has a split in the two screens so you can't watch a large video screen. Also the camera sucks if you try to use it as your phone. I use a surface Duo one as my phone and I love it but it isn't without drawback.
Great video as always! I think the real muscle memory we have to remember to forget if switching to Pixel fold from Duo is to not bend the phone backward! hehe
Hmm (sighs) 😞 so here we go..... If only Microsoft would grow a pair and actually stick with the duo for once and not just update but truly keep refining and devolping thier phone products. I am so sick of Microsoft abandoning amazing potential products like the duo and dumping on their actual customers again & again! I have no interest in the pixel even though it looks good etc, as I do though love my duo 2 and love the multitasking and the use of the pen, plus I prefer the wider screen ratio. I am not fussed about the screen not being on the front, as for me its less distracting. Okay rant over 😂
Great job Shane (as always). One issue I wish you would add to this, however, is lack of pen support on the Pixel Fold. With the dual screens, being able to write your notes (or annotate a doc/pdf) on one screen while referencing the other is the epitome of multi-tasking. Microsoft nailed this, and it is so sad to see that disappearing...
Great video Shane. Moved over from my Duo to Pixel Fold on Tuesday and completely concur with everything you say. My wish list for the Pixel Fold would include an App Pair function and the keyboard just under the app you are typing on, not across the full screen
As a Duo 2 owner, I'm worried for when it will come the time to replace my phone, I don't think I'll ever get the same multitasking experience and the luxury of using a pen on glass on the inside screen without any worry (i press the pen a lot when I write something)
Thanks for the video! I tell you, Microsoft has really missed an opportunity, I mean Samsung has released 4 going on 5 iterations of their phone and now Google has jumped in to the sandbox and yet the Duo is still differentiated from both. I still have my Duo 1 with the hopes of a Duo 2 at some point in the future and I love what the Duo does well. Android 13 on Duo is an interesting concept, hopefully it will see the light of day!
Definitely how I feel with my Pixel Fold too, not as good as Duo in multitasking, but much better in every other way, honestly the thing I miss the most is app pairing even though I actually only ever setup a single pairing, Google Maps + TH-cam Music, but I used it quite often as that was my driving configuration so it was nice to drop my phone in the dock, hit that pairing and I'm good to go, vs manually having to do it every time with the Fold, though I hear app pairing is supposedly going to be pair of Android 14 so here's hoping that's true. Aside from that, being able to open apps in full screen on the inner display without the break in the middle is really great and something I've been doing a ton, I actually rarely use the cover display and just open it up to get the large screen, and the separately configurable auto rotation for outer screen and inner screen is absolutely amazing, wish I had that on Duo.
Great and helpful video, thanks!! My Pixel Fold is still unboxed here and I don't see any reason why I should switch from the SD2 to the PF other than the better camera.
Nah I prefer my two separate screens. Especially since they are both made of glass instead of plastic. What would make my Duo 2 better is if there was a screen on the outside for notifications or for quick things such as playing music or checking navigation. I much prefer having a far more durable device than I would ever experience with a plastic folding screen. Especially since even the Galaxy Fold screens have been known to start showing cracks after just 6 months of use.
I love how you give the eg of walking the dog. I love my surface duo 2 I bought mainly for my business. I really want the pixel to replace my other phone. Two foldables i crazy i know. Thanks for your review- your reviews are my fave.
Double tap the split screen divider to swap the position of the apps! Thank you Shane! This was driving me crazy that I couldn't find a way to do this.
Man... the section of your video from @4:50 just kind of makes me sad. I think Surface Duo may have broken me for all other phones ay. I never open the phone thinking "All right what am I going to start multitasking now". It's more like I will just open an app as per normal, but then remember I needed to check something in an email so that instantly pops open on the other screen, I see what I needed then I'm right back to the other one. Oh, now I wanted to see if any new video got posted from that TH-cam channel I follow? Quickly swipe that first app over to the other screen and TH-cam is now instantly open on the first screen - check it, then I'm back to the first app again. It's seamless and natural. There is no intentionality around multitasking, it just happens. I think only people who have used Duo 2 could possibly understand this feeling. Even though I love so much about how the Pixel Fold looks, I just know I would never actually split screen apps. The inside screen would just become a larger screen, that's it. Like, maybe very occasionally if I needed to be copying or referencing text from one app to another I would go through the intentionality of forcing them both open but it would never just happen naturally I don't think. Then again, I haven't used it so maybe I'm completely wrong. Would love if you could do a follow up video a few weeks down the line and explain how much you felt you used multitasking on the big screen ^_^ As always thanks for your great coverage!!
I agree the duo is great - all it really needed was a cover screen and the ability to take a call without opening it - basically the fold with the duo screen format would be perfect.
Do we know why Google opted for this needlessly complex way to multitask? They have the splitted launcher screens, like the Duo. After opening one app they could allow us to swipe it to one "screen" and display the launcher on the other side. Allowing you to pick your second app, just like on Duo.
Multitasking walking the dog that's why i have a Samsung 46mm smartwatch with duo2, i use that for quick messages, a quick Google assistant command, it is my duo front screen essentially. Works great.
I've gotten really good at opening the duo since making it my daily driver 😂 gonna have to make a short or something! I'm honestly getting more and more tempted to just continue using the Sd2...
Great video Shane. Thanks. I am. One week into a duo two and finding my habits are adapting to the dual screen thing. I came from a fold 3 and never used mutilpe windows on that. I'm finding this duo in a dock on my desk has replaced my email windows on my pc. The overall experience so far is really good. Thanks for your work.
You don't have to open it to answer calls. You can have a smart watch show you the notifications and to answer calls via Bluetooth. I never have to take my Duo 2 out of my pocket unless I need to look at email or want to watch a video.
Great video as always...It looks like I am going to have to wait on the Duo 3 for a bit longer and hope they release one...the Pixel Fold isn't the answer for me...
If the Microsoft Surface Duo 3 would look like a pixel fold but emulate the duo's way of working in the inner screen, that will act like a dual screen.... and only go to 'tablet' screen mode if and when the user maximizes an app (Like a game or streaming app) to fullscreen them selfs? They would have the very best of both worlds!
9:58 Can the Pixel Fold not do a floating window over the side-by-side windows? I do that with Google Maps or TH-cam. It takes the "drawing over windows" setup.
Hi Shane, thank you so much for everything you do for us with reference to surface duo and the entire foldable phones ecosystem. I have been following your videos for a bit and I'm very grateful. I have installed Pixel OS on by SD1 & I really really am convinced that surface duo is way better compared to the pixel phone when it come to multitasking. For the main fact that SD by default put apps in separate screens why the Pixel fold immediately puts them in full screen and you are forced to start creating spilts screens. This kills multitasking express
Good comparison , Missing 1 thing that I hate about my Fold, I hate when multitasking and I swipes down to read a notification it covers both screens, I don't know about you but I don't change setting every time I look at my notification
Great video and comparison [that no-one else is doing!]. I like the $350 I paid for SD1, so the Pixel is a tough sell! It is clear some things were ‘borrowed’ from SD. No one else is saying this but the aspect ratio, the hinge etc. Google has improved some areas but I am happy with the lack of external screen and I didn’t buy the SD for its sub-par cameras.
Great video Shane. An in depth comparison and pleasantly surprised that Duo is still the multi-tasking king. I think the Pixel Fold would be an instant purchase for me if Surface Duo did not exist. I can see it improving over time as it develops. For me, the Duo just makes sense in the way it operates plus a proper aspect ratio making the Duo a power users dream device. I had already gone out and bought a new Duo 1 so I now have a pair of the "Dynamic Duo's" 😀
Thanks for the vid. I'm looking for a foldable phone since the royole flexpay😁. But... I think the foldable phones, right now, are a solution searching a problem. Normally we don t do multitasking. I would love to see good allcreen apps. And for now they are not taking advantage of it 😊
The form factor looks good but the functionality in book mode looks like a daily nuesance. Maybe not as bad as Duo 1 in phone mode constantly wanting to switch screens, but that was a lot of button pushing on the Google phone. I'd be interested to know how well it works in laptop mode with an app on top and keyboard on bottom. That's how I'm typing on Duo now and it works great. Still, my main concern is spending a fortune on a phone only to have the middle of the foldable screen go bad over time and I don't think anyone knows right now how that will perform over an extended time.
I don't think anyone is buying the pixel fold as a "duo pro". It's a crappy situation to have to give up some of the benefits of duo, but those of us who were there from the start, we've been jumping back and forth from duo to zfold, due to issues duo has. But there's issues with the zfold too that just bother me so much. The pixel fold to me is the lovechild of the duo and zfold and gives me the best of both worlds, while still sacrificing some of what made the parent devices so great. But pixel fold has potential to solve so many of the issues I have between zfold and duo and that's the main reason I'm going to Main the pixel fold. Also.... please do the kindle review .. and go into depth on how that hinge works. I know I keep going on and on asking, but you are my go to for these videos, and I look forward to your explanations over anyone else's. Thanks Shane. Keep up the great work.
I apologize if I missed it somewhere but has it been said already. Which folding phone has the longest lease with Google or whoever so the software does not keep getting updated to where it just makes the phone stop working correctly? that's the fold I want to purchase.
I often use my Duo 2 in Tentmode or Laptopmode... watching Netflix/TH-cam and browse the Web. How you got this on the Pixel Fold? Is there any Mode like the Tentmode on Duo?
Both work pretty much as you would expect. I'm going from cover display to tablet display it doesn't switch over until it's opened well past 90°. Just open it up a little less than 90 and set it down like a tent.
I have both. For multitasking Surface Duo 2 is the best phone in the World!!!! But The pixel fold is the best Foldable phone!!! It gives you an incredible user experience, and is the best choice for someone who had a surface Duo!!!
5:15 Beother, that's not the exact same, Shane! You're still awesome! But you definitely did NOT have 2 apps on PF from the desktop you could have launched. Really added additional steps there, making the Duo look even that much B.A.
I have the surface duo 2 it's my dream size for a fold phone it's perfect i was looking forward to upgrading to the pixel fold until I realised it was way smaller than the duo 😢
This is the exact video I needed. Thanks, Shane! I wanted SD to work out but never made the jump due to the jank at launch of SD. Are you happy with the physical aspects of PF? Does it feel like a downgrade with the plastic interior screen on PF?
I can say from my experience (I have OG Duo, and now daily an Oppo Find N2) I do feel so much less secure with a plastic screen. I loved using the surface pen on my Duo and it felt nice because the screens were glass. Now, I have to use a very soft fiber tipped universal pen for my Find N2 just out of fear of scratching the plastic. Even then, I still managed to scratch it lmao. That's just my niche experience, because I'm sure not many care for a stylus.
Thanks for the comparison Shane! Definitely Pixel fold gives a better out of pocket one handed experience compared to duo 2. Did I notice the twitter app opening up in some weird size initially? I'm not a tiktok user, but I wonder what does Pixel Fold do when it encounters those wider videos? Is it cut off compared to Duo or do you then get the same black borders but at the top and bottom. Not that It matters much really, for me personally, I'm not sure the Fold does enough of what I care about to pull these old eyes from the larger dual screen. I suspect, it will be Microsoft themselves that forces me to give up the Duo and not some other device.
Nah. Gonna wait for what or if MS brings next. all these flagship phones wether iPhone Pro Max or S23 Ultra, you are going to need two hands, so why do we expect a even larger phone/ Phablet to be something to use one handed? The thinness of the device doesnt feel any thinner than the surface. Surface has bigger screens. Sure the Pixel Fold performs better, BUT it should. Its newer. For me i gonna bear and deal with the surface taking a second or two longer to load. If MS doesnt deliver something better or unique then I wil seriously consider the Google Fold foe sure. Thanks for the info Shane.
I know it sounds trivial, but the round icons are killing me. I hate them, so for now I have zero icons on the home screen. On Duo you can very quickly launch apps on whichever display you choose. Google made this task unnecessarily complicated, if they get rid of the "pick other app" dependency, it will make my life much better.
I wonder if it would be possible to install the duo launcher on the pixel. Or if someone could drop an offshoot of it for the multitasking capabilities
@@scaryifliteral Oh. That's kind of disappointing. I will stick with my Duo then. I'm not professional but mainly use my phone to read or draw. Duo is a nice form factor for both of these.
I have to say I got the pixel fold to try having a galaxy ultra as my main phone and duo 2 as my business phone wanted to see if it was able to get me away from the duo and well it didn't. I ended up giving it to my brother and my business phone became an oppo find n2 I got shipped overseas and the small footprint of the oppo is just way better. The pixel wasn't bad but the ui I wasn't a fan of.
Hello my friend, can you ask a Hello my friend, can you ask a question? Microsoft Duo 2 x Sansung Fold 5. Which would be better? Both have similar value.
Kind of depressing watching the video. I realize nothing will equal the experience I'm getting with my duo not even if MS decided to release a follow up since that would most likely be single screen. Thanks for the amazing content as always.
Is'nt This The Same For Every Phone That Comes OUT!! 3 Days in & it's the BEST Thing Since Slice Bread & Back Pockets....It's An Ok Device it does what of them do the same...I'm Trying To Figure Out Why I Bought It...
@@scaryifliteral I did & I enjoy your vids I didn't want the pixel I wanted the oppo for size but oppo you needed to do a few things to get Google Services...I have Duo duo 2 z fold & z fold 4 & now this Pixel I don't talk on none of them I use them for apps no social media...until these foldable can beat dex they will have a duo 1 is unique & still heads....
The first comparison you've done about "multi-tasking" on the real world... If you keep your duo folded in phone mode, you can do the same thing you've explained with the fold. The rest seemed fair enough. Thanks for your hard work
The idea of having duo and phone mode in my pocket is not something I enjoy thinking about. For one, it's going to be pressed against its own camera bump and for two, you've got screen on either side. Too exposed.
When talking multitasking the surface duo is a two screen device while the pixel is a single screen device. For me that's hands down the beauty of the pixel. It's a single screen device that handles multitasking incredibly similar to a that cumbersome, often ugly experience of the duo. Going back to a single app or home screen is a massive disappointment on the duo. Its a reminder of the two screen implementation which just feels super dated in 2023. The fold just feels in time while the duo feels so windows xp 😊
you've gone so far into left field with the pixel (which you didn't like on day one by the way). Why are you not comparing it to the new Razr? Thats the real Duo competition for multitasking in the world.
Nonsensical comment. I stated Duo is still better at multitasking. How is that me going "too far into left field" with Pixel Fold? Seems like a pretty honest, measured take. As for me not liking it day one, you're just wrong there lol. Been covering the rumors of this thing with extreme excitement for years. Go watch my live stream. I'm excited. Razr is in no way similar to Duo, btw. Totally different phone for a totally different use case.
@@scaryifliteral the duo actually has a real purpose in its hardware, same with the new Razr, your just a fanboy who will like anything. The thing is no different that the fold. It's the same software. How is the razr any different to the pixel? Besides size and shape
Shane isn't a fanboy. The Razr phone only has a single screen on the outside and inside. The Duo phones have two on the inside. You can use each screen individually or with both running two different apps. You cannot do that with any of the Razr phones.
@@kingzach74 uh yes he is. The Razr + like the Duo 2 is a game changer. Multitasking multiple apps in android has existed for a decade. The Pixel Fold is just a preview of what the Duo community say will be a stepback in the Duo 3. The Razr + is the new foldable king. Way out in left field because he needed it and forgot to look around lol.
Nice video once again! I've had the Surface Duo 2 as well, which I sold to finance my Pixel Fold. One thing the Pixel Fold has over the Duo 2, in terms of multitasking, is that you can have several splits that you can go back and forth between. I just tested it out and in Recent Apps I have 3 splits. I don't remember the Duo 2 being able to do that. It will be nice once Android 14 releases when they optimize more features for the Fold, including the supposed app pairs feature.
Duo 2 is better I tried both phones, my friend has the pixel fold, it heats up, duo 2 has the bigger screens and behaves more better for multitasking, I tought u were duo for life Shaun lol jk buddy,
I can go on camera and say that the pixel fold is better than surface Duo at literally everything except multitasking and people will still call me a surface shill. Yesterday I got multiple comments from people calling me a pixel sheep as well. You want to know the truth? It's just hard for people with one brain cell to comprehend somebody coming to their own conclusions and having their own opinions.

Multitasking walking the dog that's why i have a Samsung 46mm smartwatch with duo2, i use that for quick messages, a quick Google assistant command, it is my duo front screen essentially. Works great.
Boy, still going to pocket the OG Duo as a secondary device. And hold out hope Microsoft or someone will improve on the split screen design.
What dock are you using if you don't mind me asking?
got rid of ht duo2 because I hated opening the thing just to answer phone calls or quickly look at notifications
You don't have to open it to answer calls. You can have a smart watch show you the notifications and to answer calls via Bluetooth. I never have to take my Duo 2 out of my pocket unless I need to look at email or want to watch a video.
@@kingzach74 yes but now I need a second device to solve that problem
Great video as always...It looks like I am going to have to wait on the Duo 3 for a bit longer and hope they release one...the Pixel Fold isn't the answer for me...
Shane.....they will have to pry my SD2 out of my cold dead hands.....but nice work as usual.
Thanks, I do think there will be sometimes to use two apps on the front thanks for showing that. Enjoy your real world usages so very helpful.
Shane, keep up the good work.
Glad I subscribed to your channel
I'm still using the surface duo one no problems with cameras they actually got better thanks to software updates
i feel like you're the only person I'd listen to for this comparison!
Good comparison , Missing 1 thing that I hate about my Fold, I hate when multitasking and I swipes down to read a notification it covers both screens, I don't know about you but I don't change setting every time I look at my notification
And the winner is: LG V60/Velvet with Dual Screen case when it comes to multitasking because you can swap the sides of 2 apps too 😁
Great video and comparison [that no-one else is doing!].
12:01 Is the video image stabilization issues with SD2 fixed, so the P.Fold doesn't just punk the SD2?
Great video Shane. An in depth comparison and pleasantly surprised that Duo is still the multi-tasking king. I think the Pixel Fold would be an instant purchase for me if Surface Duo did not exist. I can see it improving over time as it develops. For me, the Duo just makes sense in the way it operates plus a proper aspect ratio making the Duo a power users dream device. I had already gone out and bought a new Duo 1 so I now have a pair of the "Dynamic Duo's" 😀
In my opinion Microsoft should become a Android OEM having a single screen slab a dual screen device and a single foldable device like a z-fold
Thank you for the comparison.
Also.... please do the kindle review
.. and go into depth on how that hinge works. I know I keep going on and on asking, but you are my go to for these videos, and I look forward to your explanations over anyone else's.
Thanks Shane. Keep up the great work.
*Omg here comes surface duo with a steel chair!*
The 2 in 1 race is heating up
3:22 scenario is spot on haha It's not single hand friendly in a ton of situations.
@@scaryifliteral ok. Thx for your reply 😊👍
Have you tried the microsoft launcher on the fold yet? Curious to know what it works like.
Looks like stretched on Microsoft Launcher
Interestingly, it doesn't let me split screen Pokémon GO. I can't run two instances of it like I can on Surface Duo or even a Z Fold.
After two days use, this is 100% my take away as well. While there is much to like about the Pixel Fold, it is falling short for how I multitask.
Well done. Still think the Duo 2 is best. Wish they would come up with the Duo 3.
great review, exactly what I've been ĺooking for. 👌👌👌
I'm using the Quick Cursor app to help to reach the far edge.
I wonder if it would be possible to install the duo launcher on the pixel. Or if someone could drop an offshoot of it for the multitasking capabilities
The stuff that makes Duo do what it does is not contained in the launcher. The launcher directs the implementation but isn't the implement itself.
@@scaryifliteral I guess it's wishful thinking then! Android developers are amazingly capable though.
Does the Duo 1 still work on ATT since they shut down 4G ?
Thanks
Does the Pixel Fold support digital pens? Think this will be my deciding factor.
It does not
@@scaryifliteral Oh.
There's no way you actually watched this video
Its an easier way to start multiple app without long pressing
How hot does the fold get
Watching on my DUO 1. I'm good.
Yo sigo prefiriendo Surface duo. Es una lastima que en surface duo 2 pusieran esas camaras afuera y se perdiera esa figura estilizada del Surface duo.
I think I'll just stick with my Surface Duo 2 for now.
you've gone so far into left field with the pixel (which you didn't like on day one by the way).
Way out in left field because he needed it and forgot to look around lol.
hey question does the hinge on the pixel fold resemble the duo? looks like google ripped off the duos hinge.
you can have two plus a floating windiow
I want either one
Thanks!
Thanks for the super!
Surface Duo is best for emulation because of 4:3 aspect ratio.
U can play two games on duo at same time
Yes
Pixel Fold is what the Duo 3 will be
Z fold is the best for multitasking
Asthetically, the pixel n' pretty much any brand takes it over Microsoft but that's the only àrea I think Microsoft lacks in tho
Samsung does multitasking really well
When you bring the z fold into frame, I want to vomit 😂😂
Can you find a way to run duo 2 on pixel fold?
Anything beats the surface duo. Those bluetooth issues, software bugs, and constant freezing is next level
While those glitches suck, they only just happened to me for the first time with the two most recent updates...v.v
Duo 2 is better I tried both phones, my friend has the pixel fold, it heats up, duo 2 has the bigger screens and behaves more better for multitasking, I tought u were duo for life Shaun lol jk buddy,
Duo gets just as hot as the Fold in my experience. It's Shane, btw.
the Pixel looks like a brick
such a surface shill its sad lol
I can go on camera and say that the pixel fold is better than surface Duo at literally everything except multitasking and people will still call me a surface shill. Yesterday I got multiple comments from people calling me a pixel sheep as well.
You want to know the truth? It's just hard for people with one brain cell to comprehend somebody coming to their own conclusions and having their own opinions.
😂😂😂 eat that Mr one brain cell man! 😂
Keep doing good work Shane 👍🏼
