I agree with Heit. Mister was never in love with Shug. He loved the forever honeymoon stage they were in. Any kindness he showed towards a woman was just a mask to lure her in. We even see it when he was courting Nettie. The reason he was always able to be his true self with Celie, was because he never had earn her trust. Her stepfather practically pawned her off and told Mister he could do anything he wanted to her. Regardless of who he married, Mister would've been a terrible husband to his wife, but an amazing boyfriend to his sidechick lol!

Albert aka Mr would never have been a good husband to anybody because he didn't have a good example of how a good husband should be. Mr. was a very weak man and he was very controlling. Shug Avery and him would never have worked because Shug Avery was a free spirit

Mr. Didn’t think Celile was worth putting on an act for but Sung would have gotten some level of abuse. She probably wouldn’t had stayed but she definitely would have experienced at some point. This is like a women asking why a man was abusive to his ex and him saying she was ugly lol. So u think ok cool he not go hurt me bc im not ugly only once the honeymoon ends he’s jealous of every man that shows u attention now abuse has began. An abuser will find a reason to be abusive. If Mr. Wasn’t abusive and just a ok person he wouldn’t had hurt celie in anyway even if he didn’t love her.

Mister probably wouldn't have tried to treat Suge like a dog but he couldn't be a good husband to anyone because like Suge said, he's weak. He was a Daddy's boy who couldn't think for himself or stand up to his father. He passed that same disfunction down to Harpo.

Before I start, I also read the book, and that does shape the way I look at this narrative. Having said that, look at the real life example of Chatles and Dianna verses Charles and Camilla. According to Dianna, Di couldn't do anything right. But, Camilla, the woman that he wanted to marry in the 1st place, she can do no wrong. For Mister, Celie represented everything that went wrong in his life and Shug was e erything that could have been. He would have tried to do and be better for Shug because he wanted her. There was no effort in the relationship that he had with Celie because he never really wanted her.

@13:24 Harpo did take on that behavior IMO
His wife just beat his azz, so he couldn’t continue the toxic behavior but had he lost the fight, he would have beat Sophia too and the family trauma would have continued.

  • @knowdaqueen177
    @knowdaqueen177 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

14:04 Harpo basically did take on that behavior from his daddy because it took one convo with Ceily for him to attempt to beat Sophia. He believed it was something he was supposed to do but he physically couldn’t because Sophia could fight back effectively. Harpo was hesitant because he did love Sophia but also Sophia’s prowess challenged his preconceptions of their marriage roles.
When Ceily told him to beat her he realized that you don’t just fall into the role of a dominant husband and submissive wife and in pursuit of that he tried it.
Harpo is exactly what Mister would be if he married Suge. The only difference is Mister had violent tendencies so the moment someone like his dad told him to beat Suge for getting out of line, he would’ve done it successfully.

Remember in the book, years after Celie was gone, and came back and him and Celie became friends, he eventually suggested thst they get remarried the right way because after he got to know her, he loved her and when she said reminded him that she was gay for real, he then proceeded to help keep the men away from her so she didn't have to keep turning them down. Also the book described his as the most sought after eligible bachelor in town. But it appears that wives in his family were meant to acquire for indentured servitude and not love. He would have been a better man if he stood up on his 2 feet and worked his own land and then he could have married who he wanted to. He was lazy on top of everything else

He would've domesticated her, gave her babies, and tried to treat & beat her the way he treated Celie. A lot of dudes like Mister get off on taking the women they can't get down or stopping them. It's a game. It's like unaliving that one boss in a video game, and once he's done, he tosses the video game to the side and moves on to the next video game with an even "bigger" boss.

And what about all those kids Suge and Albert had allegedly? He believed they were his yet there wasn't any talk of him seeing, supporting or claiming him in public because his daddy said no. Anybody who bucked up to him would have sat him down. He had to find someone who was already broken to make him feel like a man. His first wife was so NOT afraid of him that she had another man.

Based on the book and the time frame...I feel like Mister would have abused anyone... we don't like to speak on it but during that time period physical abuse was very prevalent and in a lot of cases seen as normal or expected...If he was with Shug there still would have been abuse they just would have been fighting back and forth like Harpo and Sophia

  • @candace9560

I think it’s scary to believe that a man only will treat someone right only if they like them lol. People who respect people will respect everyone who shows respect. Those who pick and choose who they want to show love to or respect are usually users, abusers, and the act never last. Sung wouldn’t haven’t gotten a better Mr. She would have just gotten a honeymoon faze. Bc if Mr. Was just decent as a human, he wouldn’t had laid a hand on Celie and would have showed her decent kindness even if he didn’t love her. He wasn’t going to love no one properly.

Suge wanted to be a Star more than anything! She left her daughter with her parents and ran off! She would have done Mister the same way! Also Mister kind of saved Celie from having more children by her stepdad! Even tho he treated her the same, in her mind it was an escape from being assaulted by her Dad! But I don’t know 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m just a new subscriber who loves to debate about movies! I love this Channel. ❤ 🎥

Ok shug in my opinion would never have agreed to marry mister and the only way I see them married is if she is forced. (Or he turns into such a simp that he becomes her rowdy… he just might be that insecure but then again insecure men are dangerous) I honestly think she was probably a lesbian or bi or something. Mister wouldn’t make her happy and I think mister would feel that. He would get angry at that simple fact and I don’t think she would be loyal to him. If he comes home to find her with somebody he legit might have tried to kill her or something. Or the spell would have been broken and he would have treated her like how his daddy taught him. (Because notice he treated woopie’s sister good right until she rejected him). Would shug have taken that? No!! And honestly who is to say it didn’t happen like that where they tried to have a relationship and shug saw how insecure he was and decided to back off? Maybe she backed up with enough time to preserve the relationship. A marriage with them would never last.

I think Heit is on to something....Mister and Shug would've played out like Harpo and Sophia to a certain extent... But Mister isn't as strong-willed as Harpo...he would've listened to his daddy vs getting a back bone like Harpo did....I feel like Cheri though...he wouldn't have hit Shug...BUT he was still narcissistic...so he would've tried to change her...all the things he was attracted to in Shug, he would've tried to control and snuff it out.. I think the ab*$e would've changed forms...to mental or emotional ab*$e...I don't think he ab*$ed his first wife... which is why she had enough confidence to have a side piece..I think the ab*$e on Ceily was moreso showing how ppl treated her...her daddy did her the same way but he wasn't as harsh to Nettie...

  • @nyapayton7087

Me personally, I think that Mr would treat Shug like a queen AT FIRST, then eventually his true colors would start to show and he'd eventually start being abusive to her. And Mr DEFINITELY wouldn't be ok with Shug being a showgirl dancing provocatively and sexually all over people in her shows like she tends to do, so I also think he'd try to force her to quit showbiz on top of eventually being abusive towards her, cause if he was abusive towards his first wife and Celie, he'll be abusive towards Shug sooner or later

Cheri is absolutely right about what she said aɓout not letting one another struggle alone being a tell tale sign of love. Over decades, love changes. I've been with my husband for 29 years and its not always a barrel full of monkeys around here so there has to be certain things besides sex and good looks that keeps people invested in sharing their lives together. Stability and reliability are very important to me so I'm with Cheri on that one.

I think he would have try but Shug was a free spirit and more of an Alpha woman. She would not have been the traditional wife that takes care of home. Mister and Shug had three children that was being raised by Shug's parents. Shug wasn't a passive, submissive woman. If Shug and Mister would have marry, Mister would have been like his son Harpo. He couldn't control her and Shug would have ruled the relationship which could explain why he didn't marry her. Also, Mister didn't take care of her when she was sick. He pushed her off on Celie to care for. In the book, Shug resented Mister for slighting her twice. He didn't marry her initially and he didn't marry her after his first wife died. Even though Shug was this bigger-than-life personality and a free spirit, she was also very warm and compassionate. That was how she and Celie grew close. She never experience the type of love and care that Celie showed her from the men that she laid with and she reciprocated. Celie poured into her and she did the same for Celie. Shug never got that from Mister.
Mister was evil and weak. The root of his evil nature come from not knowing himself. His father didn't rear him to be independent, but rather to be subservient to his father's own interests.

Do a video on Squeak. She had a very interesting story in the book that wasn't incorporated in both the 1985 adaptation and the 2023 musical adaptation. She was just Harpo's girl in the film adaptations.

I think would have been a lot like Harpo. Trying to figure out how to control Shug after a while. Shug wanted to sing and part of that would be going on the road. Albert would get jealous of the people she is dealing with. Shug also had other people just she wanted too. Then the quest is "Would they be good for each other in a day-to-day relationship?"

Having a good example is not necessarily a prerequisite for being good at something. Many individuals who lacked a good role model for what a partner should be have still managed to learn and improve through counseling or other forms of guidance. While our parents may provide us with examples, we can also learn from teachers, other family members, and the people in our communities and social circles. Ultimately, familiarity with something can lead to contentment, but it's not the only path to success.

@33:00 min mark...I feel like Cheri is saying that loving your spouse will cause you to care about her happiness in a different way than a husband who doesn't....even through their certain chores, and responsibilities the husband who is truly in love will have more patience, understanding and overall help and respect....but a husband who doesn't love his wife, won't appreciate anything she does...would've never tried to make her load easier or just genuinely cared....there were definitely love matches back then...even with the strict gender roles..

I feel he would always have an inclination to hit on a woman but it'd play out different for each person. Since his life is a mess and he seemed to be looking for a woman to fix it, yet hes stuck with someone he doesn't want and has to "train", just by looking at ceile probably frustrated him. It would've been the same with the sister but they would've had a honeymoon phase and some ups and downs. When he tried to force himself on her and dragged her out the house shows that desire wont stop his violence/temper. But with Shug, she had desire and age on her side. Hed still try to lay hands and there may be some push back because theres some strength with age but shes no sophia, shes a free spirit that knew how to move

He wouldn't have treated suge as bad as he treats celie. Celie was not the woman he wanted or chose to be with. Honestly, harpo is who mister is on the inside. Mister does not treat harpo how mister father treated him that's why he was so different personality wise. He didn't see celie as the love of his life, it was a contract.
Oprah took it until she was tired obviously she kept coming back having kids each time
If suge would have been with mister he wouldn't have all those kids suge was not having that

I definitely think that he would’ve treated Shug a lot better than he treated Celie, but he would not have been a good husband to her at all. He would’ve gotten annoyed, jealous and a whole bunch of other things regarding her appeal to other people. Also I think what attracted Mr. to Shug in the first place was the fact that he could not have her completely

Albert only understood abuse. Shug would have walked all over him. They would had a toxic relationship as two drunken rolling stone musicians. Eventually she would have met someone better and left him OR Albert would have knocked up Shug in a desperate attempt to keep her and she still would have left him a single father. He would have crawled back to his mean ole pappy, worked the land, and found a young girl to marry and abuse.

He courted Nettie is such a childish way and showed how he treats someone he doesn't care about. I wholeheartedly feel that he would've only used Nettie to throw in Shug's face as a new model version.

I don’t believe squeak was like celie at all.Squeak was young hi yellow with good hair attached to a man who was spending money on her. I think squeak is more like shook Avery as she grows up and grows into her own. If another man came along that have more money than Harpo she would be with that man. And I’m not saying that’s a bad thing because women have to do what they have to do at that time black women didn’t have many rights Or protections. And I don’t think Suga Avery what is a feminist I think she put up with the people talking shit about her having those kids Young and then decided to do what she wanted to do with her life because they gonna talk no matter what. And Mr. was a miserable man because his daddy made him miserable taught him to be miserable conditioned him to be miserable he would’ve been miserable regardless of what woman he ended up with until he figured out that hole within himself.
