great info mike. u keep it real only put out real proven shit, no fake instagram bs. i appreciate that youve changed how i think about diet and training
@@chrishummer1880 yessir, all i do are box squats. they're really no different from a regular squat form-wise, but they serve two purposes: to give you a depth marker every rep (i usually go 1-2" below parallel), and to prevent you from bouncing at the bottom and using momentum on the way up. unless you want a broken ass bone. lol
Well a lot of things are "doable", but its going to be more stress on the joints than if he was shorter no matter how its accomplished. You may be able to overcome the laws of physics, but they cannot be denied.
@Top Doge that's absolutely incredible. i'm 6'6" like i said and my max is 475lbs lol. which i'm proud of, but still in the realm of normalcy unlike the mountain
I started doing the plates under heels doing squats recently and it's the best thing ever, I never felt anything on my quads from doing normal squats, mostly hamstring, glutes and more lower back pressure, even my knees feel better and now I can feel my quads hurting few days after.
Great video very informative thanks for sharing I'm really struggling to build rear delts would appreciate any advice 💪🏻 Huge respect keep these videos coming
I've been training all my life and have always neglected delts. Been training them lately with a vengeance and for the first time can actually see the rear delt flexed. Still got a long way to go to make it stand out though.
Well of course the little guy is going to have a better form, he's got the lowest center of gravity. Not to mention the advantage of leverage and ROM. I must emphasize however, what Mike said about movement. When my back and shoulder went out I stopped all training and movement. After working out my entire life, I didn't step foot into the gym for 8 years. During that time my back and shoulder continued to deteriorate and the pain got worse. After a long bout of depression, I finally got back into the gym and began to work my shoulder up. I started with 1 plate, and today I'm up to 8. Working out didn't cure me, but at least now I have a lot more mobility, and the pain has subsided significantly. I went from taking pain killers everyday, to when needed. In fact, my shoulder therapy worked so well, I tried it on my knees and now I sometimes forget I have a knee disability. The constant throbbing that used to cripple me is virtually gone. I am forever a believer in movement. If you can't do full reps, do half reps, If you can't do half reps, do quarter reps. Whatever you do, don't ever just quit.
Hello everyone. Could you please add any videos in regards to calf training? I haven't found it in the video list. I think this a weak point for a lot of people, and its develop creates a very well vision of the legs all around. Thank you very much in advance.
the only thing I don’t like is that for the taller guys the hand position is so awkward.. I’m 6’3” with 78” arm with and is is very difficult and uncomfortable to get my hands under the bar and I have to extend them out to touching the plates… The bar Mike used looks much better for a tall man to use, but honestly the only reason I still squat is because I use a safety bar - specifically, Dave Draper’s Top Squat… keeping the arm’s tucked in rather than extended out with my wrists bent at an odd angle really makes a difference
The way Mike is able to move deeply into his range of motion, almost as if he is putting his body in a vulnerable position, and then rep it out, is amazing. Just years of conditioning and making the less stable part of an exercise, into a strength is going to be his contribution to this art.
The more I watch Mike's videos the more I like him, he's actually a good guy giving gold advice. Don't know why I was even on the O'Hern hate train but I'm off now.
Damn! Although I understand he is not natural, my god he is fit!! I could take all the drugs in the world and not be as strong or dedicated as that man! Hats off to him!
I started lifting at 45 yo...nearing 49....lifting (lots of squatting) have improved my health, physique and life immensely. This from a tall, ex-long distance runner and cyclist whos knees were "destroyed". I constantly tell my friends who are bitchin and moaning, "start squatting with good form...your life will improve for the better".
Squatting is the best overall exercise to do, not only for strength but you can actually use squats for cardio by increasing the number of reps you do (20+ reps per set). Forever love squats
Mike would you tell me what putting your heel on a weight would do, I have been seeing this but not once used on any leg days. Just been going with regular and wide squats, so if you can answer it would greatly be appreciated!
Raising the heal changes the moment angle (physics term) of the entire leg so that the kneecap is farther out over the toes. Thus as you a bend your legs at the knees while squatting you have more leverage. The bar on your back is still dropping straight down toward the floor but because you are angled slightly forward with the heal elevated you don't have to sit your butt back quite so far to achieve a hip parallel to knee position. It helps alleviate the problem of people having to round out the lower part of their back at the very bottom of the lift.
I think doing heavy weight is something that should be done every now and then. When squatting and you are heavy. It has to be about the number of squats and limited on the weight.
Some nasty stuff said about him on other vids. He seems like a nice genuine guy with a sense of humour to me. From what I see he also has a good teaching style. Can’t win em all I suppose.
He's teaching him low bar form which forces your chest forward more than high bar. Low bar is easier to leverage the high bar (you can add more back strength into the lift). He's compensating for Little John's extra height which works against him in the squat exercise. High bar isolates the quads more and forces a more erect back posture. So Mike is using low bar to make things easier.
The only thing I would change for Little John is his hand placement on the bar. He has backbent wrists which he will have to unlearn later as the weight increases and starts stressing his wrists and elbows.
Obviously not Mike, but wider (at least shoulder width) is definitely easier on your knees. Key to knee safety is to squat as in this vid, i.e. sit back with knees not going past toes, also break at hips and not knees to initiate squat.
True fact that arthritis isn't an excuse. I have it, Mas Oyama possibly had it, but always maintained to punch the hell out of a makiwara, folks in wheelchair that will never walk still build their upper body to be strong in life, so SKY IS THE LIMIT and absolutely no excuses, EXCEPT if you have an artery problem, then that's different!

if you have poor ankle mobility it helps you get to at or below parallel. I've also seen people use it to target the vmo muscle in the quad

To keep the spine neutral throughout the lift
He's teaching him low bar form which forces your chest forward more than high bar. Low bar is easier to leverage the high bar (you can add more back strength into the lift). He's compensating for Little John's extra height which works against him in the squat exercise.
