I have seen many documentaries on the subject of Europe and Greece, this is one of the best. Very well researched so much so that the presenter subjected many of the bureaucrats to uncomfortable questions.
Extraordinary insights on the happenings. Countries pledged, people pledged, nothing for self, stark naked..... Oh God... The game the bureaucrats play. Thanks for the revelations.
Another absolutely outstanding documentary and superb journalism! I could not agree more with the fact that people ruling in Brussels take decisions causing a huge negative impact on people living so detached from them, as Portugal, Greece, Ireland and other countries. The picture is getting clearer as the years go by. Capitalism and private owning end goal is net income at the bottom of the Income Statement. Problem is this profit is being diverted to shareholders. It is deeply aggravating, and 5 years after the release of this doc, we see what is happening, not only in the Eurozone but in the US itself, governments becoming the large corporations' puppies, huge bailouts at the taxpayer expense. Wealthier individuals are getting richer everyday, since the pandemic started, in the US itself billionaires increased their wealth in huge proportions, conversely unemployment is on the rise and the middle class is getting annihilated. Democracy is being slowly eliminated, governments should stand for the people not for private banks and not for irresponsible traders which in other words are addicted greedy gamblers. Worse than that, we are now putting A.I. with algorithms to regulate market value. It's absolutely insane, it's 2 completely different economies and realities, fantasy and reality. Say no to fascism!

I'm seeing a great documentary here and then another one about chemtrails... mixing up genuine corruption with conspiracy theories undermines your arguments.
MESSAGE TO THE IMF REPRESENTATIVE IN PORTUGAL: all the state companies operating as monopolies that were sold out provide much, much worse service, pay below minimum wage through various schemes and have much more profit. THIS IS THE MOB.
Excellent material.Although I somewhat miss more information about the accountability of former Greek politicians in letting the crisis get as far as it did and the prevailing sentiment by the European populace at large that by the Greek people, by electing those politicians in office, are at least partly responsible for much of the suffering, I recognize the goal of this documentary to start the trail of the troika at the year 2010. I only wish the capacity of self-reflection by the EU-commission was more developed than it obviously is. The dream of a unified Europe seems to be just that: a dream. Thank you for making and sharing this original research. Investigative journalism at it's best.
ReFractalus If only the european dream started with a politcal union, instead of a financial one..... As for the politcians. Buhahahahahahaetc as if politicians are ever going to be accountable for their mistakes. The last time we held european politcian accountable for their doings on a larger scale were the Nürnberg trials. :D
A lecturer here in Denmark said: Making a joint currency for so different cultures is like going into a hospital, take the temperature of all patients and find the average - and say it goes for all......
Good point. Have you seen "The Secret Bank Bailout", by the same journalist? A good informative read is "Adults in the Room". One should cast one's mind back to the days when the Euro was being constructed. Greece, Spain, Ireland and Portugal did not meet the Euro criteria, but the amount of political pressure put upon the EU and the ECB was so strong because the Euro was seen as a non-starter in the global financial world. Pressure was put on the ECB and the EU Council of Ministers to postpone the launch of the Euro, but excessive hubris struck because the Euro was being literally laughed at around the world, so the launch date could not be changed, instead they decided to change or "doctor" the books and make it look like these countries met the criteria. As a Greek citizen I felt much safer when Konstantopoulou and Varoufakis were still in Parliament. SYRIZA is turning right by the day... I'm not even sure they still have what they call their 'red lines'!
We even have this thinking in the USA. There are pundits who say lowering wages (That already are not enough to sustain a family) is good for the country. Their thinking is, we are going to export our way to Utopia. Problem is, when people can't afford goods and services, the people are lost. Yes, here there is a security net, but they want to get rid of that to. This leads to instability. Though, they've taken this into account. Hence their inaction in New Orleans. Bringing on the ability for troops to police us, and the building of camps to hold folks like me. In Langley, Their motto is "The Truth Shall Set You Free". Though for the unconnected, soon it gets you locked up, or worse. Have A Nice Day :)
A sound body of work by H. Schumann about the criminal acts of the ECB, EG and IMF, under the supervision of the EC, and some of the visible consequences in Europe, especially the devastating actions imposed by the so-called Troika group in Portugal, Greece and Cyprus. Europe can now be officially considered underdeveloped. Bravo EU !
I say Greece must live euro and European union. Then work hard to rebuild it's economy. You can also delete most of your debt because it's a debt in European banks and you have no obligation to pay it if you leave the Eurozone and the European union.
+John Baptist Actually, if the money were marked as refundable, you have no choice even if you leave. But it is also true that some of them should not be given back. Quitting EU will take out some good benefits, like free movement of people-products-capital. It will make their economy shrink even more. The problem is with them being in Euro Zone because euro is good for productive countries. This documentary compares privates business owners with small shops which are doing bad and closing but in economy the small shops are not equal with industry and other self-reliant productive businesses, like automobile industry or food industry.
free movement of people is useful only if someone is seeking job. Greece has a problem with keeping there well educated people inside the country. Greece agricultural economy will benefit if they leave Europe because they will have less competition from the outside. Well if the banks open and Greece is still in the euro they will lose almost all of the capital because the trust is broken and the banks are basicly bankrupt. Sorry for my bad English.
accurate assessment of the EU .. BREXIT was the right decision for us in UK, we are free now .. i feel so sorry for ireland , spain, italy, greece, cyprus .. however, germany is doing fantastically well !
This is really scary, and all it does is retract the worlds economies. The US is in a mess at the moment because their minimum wage is so low that don't have enough people with money to buy the cut price rubbish they buy from China. It basically creates 3 classes, a poverty class (unemployed) that gets handouts, a low income class that pays the taxes needed to provide the handouts for the poverty class and then an elite class that feeds themselves on the rest that dribbles out of the economy. This is the makings of the Russian Bolshevic revolution and dethroning of the kings. The problem is that it will then swing the other way and the elite will be beheaded and we will collapse into a basket case economic situation for an unknown time that will benefit very few. After the global financial crisis they should have just taken all of the bankers out and shot them, then markets would have recovered quicker because people would have faith in the system again. It would have also taught the next generation of greedy bankers that they aren't above everyone else.
Just in case some one thinks Krugman makes sense... His definition of Austerity is less the 100% ownership of the economy by the government. So, keep watching... If you save money you should be thrown in jail. There is no such thing as the Paradox of Thrift, which is simply a code word for the war on savers. People who have savings can engage in politics and threaten to unseat Tax Farmers Party in power.
18:11 Oh my God, Austerity!!! But what the hell is it? Austerity, Austerity this, Austerity that, but no definition of Austerity. Define Austerity!!! And who says that? The man who says that the Fed is the Driver of the US economy and in Sep 2011 wrote in the NYT that balanced budgets lead to fascism. One more thing - not a word about the property tax, which you have to pay because the sun rises, and no other reason. That is the real reason behind homelessness and poverty.
I'm sure Varoufakis has read the great book by Perkins "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by now. If you haven't, read the book, and realise that the whole Greece/Troika story is just a page out of a very well-rehearsed script written by international criminals. This kind of crime against humanity, as Varoufakis correctly puts it, has been going on for decades in the third world.
This one goes to the IMF representative in Portugal. How do you expect a country to become competitive by imposing long term debt and squeeze the population of Portugal? Gehts Nicht mein freund! I tell you what, what you do is to sell credit, the money you print from nothing, from thin air, and you want me to buy your sales pitch? If I was a politician and you happened to be negotiating the future of the Portuguese nation with you, I guarantee you you would have a very different outcome. You need other nations to export your products but you are not the only ones producing cars, and other goods. Point is, other nations also produce same goods, possibly even better than yours, but I have to confess that if one thing that Germany is good at is Marketing its products. All do respect for the German people, I have many German friends, but mugs like you, do not care about no one, you never had to work in your life, and that is the difference between us and you. The world is changing and you have more to be afraid than the rest of the population. Power to the people!!!! We will change the way things are going!
seems most of the greek want to be in the EU , potugal, ireland etc where in resecion why not be greatfull for saving al youre billions of money, set aside your pride greece won t excist anymore without EU help, please be thank full you can stil buy food and any basic items.
What they need to do is stop giving massive amounts of liquidity to big national banks for them to sit on and give extra christmas bonuses to executives. Instead, offer loans as incentive for private companies to invest in 21st century industry/technology. This will give them a good chance to find a niche in the global economy and ensure that they aren't wasting money on beekeeping or something.
I have seen many documentaries on the subject of Europe and Greece, this is one of the best. Very well researched so much so that the presenter subjected many of the bureaucrats to uncomfortable questions.
What a great documentary !! ....What a great journalist!!
Amazing and true documentary here.
Yanis is a thoughtful fan, and honest.
Thank you.
One of the best documentary I have ever seen. You should make another one how is it going now in 2021 and the effects of the covid 19 pandemic.
That was a great documentary.Very well balanced informative and precise.Very well done.
This is again a very good documentary by Harald Schumann!
Great documentary, great to see some real reporting for a change :)
Extraordinary insights on the happenings. Countries pledged, people pledged, nothing for self, stark naked..... Oh God... The game the bureaucrats play. Thanks for the revelations.
Every country should beware...thanks for this
27:00 "They have an ideology: Those who have money live, those without die." ... This may be what it truly boils down to.
Of course .slave until your die .the world has seen it before .
Thank you very much for sharing this documentary. Seems the peoples of Europe have to go on the barricades again. Greetings Denmark.

shocking so so bad I hope humans will rise up against this greedy corporates and bankers .enough
So European Bank Deposits are not insured like they are here in the States by FDIC?

@20:35 what Paul Krugman means, is that banks and debt does not matter
"I am sure it is the interpretation of the reality that is wrong, not the model." as I was once told by a theorist.
So. Now that this new party is in power in Greece, did anything change there for the better?
It's part of the same club so the obvious answer is no.
This is called "internal devaluation". It is the only option available if a country does not have it's own currency.
This is a case for the European Courts!
Its funny to see Krugman talk about unfalsifiable belief systems - he should know.

Not just the greeks the people of the world are being sacrificed for the very few

Because they were all scammed. Things didn't turn out as promised or expected for the debtor states.
