Easily one of the greatest westerns ever made, it revolutionized cinema and flipped the western genre on its head. The editing was fantastic, especially in Battle of Bloody Porch scene. Its my personal favorite western and its in my top 10 of all time.
One of the best western ever made. The director, the actors, the extras, and the writing were spot on. When you see the movie in 1969, you see it through different eyes. As you age, the movie is seen from a totally different perspective, and gets even better each time. It is almost impossible to gather a group of actors of that caliber again, with a director like Sam at the helm.

saw 'Pay or Die' the other day on YT. and I highly recommend, on YT, film of his cross country trip w/ his son, on his own bus, the sunbum .he loved to travel. it's basically reality TV. rest his soul. despite his size, he had a presence as an actor that draws you in. he can't be ignored. some actors have that, and some don't.
Ernest Borgnine is such a great actor in so many films. But I think his character in the Wild Bunch was probably his best. Both an evil-doing bank robber but also a loyal friend to the Holden character and to the Bunch. Very violent film overall but a modern classic that set up the great films of the 70s to come.
i remember a few years back when my then 17 year old son saw the wild bunch with some of his buddies his first time , he asked me the next day if i remember the movie, i told him Ive seen it about it a dozen times when i was 18 back in 1969 , he said, god dad they made good movies back then

It's not just the infamous final sequence with its 'wild' use of squibs, it's also for its construction of tension, its black humour, its blasé depiction of war, its serious and sombre look at poverty in Mexico, even its depiction of brutality in prisons. It had so much to say for itself. And I think it shows in modern cinema more so than many other Westerns or films of that era, from the likes of Tarrantino, Scorsese, Winding Refn, Martin McDonagh, Park Chan-wook, directors from different countries. I wasn't that into it the first time I watched it, but now I love it very much. It breaks my heart every time I watch it. As mentioned in another video, the film is wistful and full of camaraderie and displays of loyalty.
The Wild Bunch is famous for the final shoot out but to me , the greatness of the film is the chemistry of the cast : William Holden , Ernest Borgnine , Ben Johnson ... but also Robert Ryan as Thornton , he really gives it something as Pike Bishop's ex-partner now on the other side tracking him down.
Ernest Borgnine won an Oscar for best actor in the film Marty. He also appeared in The Dirty Dozen, Bad Day At Black Rock, The Poseidon Adventure, and Willard. He was married to one woman for a long time, and he lived to be 96 years old!
Wild Bunch was a masterpiece of western . Great storyline of never leaving your mates no matter what the odds against you . Knowing time was against you as everything had moved on and then facing huge odds that they knew they wouldn’t beat but despite that they wernt leaving their friend . Brilliant cast and story . Great film !
Peckinpah was known for the slow motion gore. It was his signature. The Getaway and Jr Bonner with McQueen were awesome too. The Wild Bunch is in my top 5 list for Westerns.

Great Flick. I remember seeing it when I was either a junior or senior in high school way back when. It so happens that the family of one of my teachers were the owners of the largest chain of movie theaters and The Wild Bunch was showing at one of their theaters which was just one block from the school. It was just before Xmas break and she decided to treat our class to a showing. Great x mas present.

I wonder what the other four pictures Warner Bros. showed the critics, etc. that week? Probably middle brow entertainment that was forgotten within a month after it's release. Meanwhile, The Wild Bunch is still being discussed 47 years later. So many great scenes! One of my favourite William Holden movies, along with Stalag 17 and Network.

I remember thinking too how bloody the movie was when it came out, you have to remember that my generation and the ones before me, grew up with John Wayne, Gary Cooper, etc; they shot a guy, he fell down, and that was that. Now when I watch THE WILD BUNCH ( for the umpteenth time), I know it for the masterpiece that it is.

An incredible film...one of the all time best westerns...a magnificent ensemble cast and a great story and dialogue....and yes there was violence...not gratuitous violence...but violence that was integral to the overall story....The Bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walter Hill made a film very much inspired by the Wild Bunch, it was Extreme Prejudice and it also had a shootout at the end of the film that was very reminiscent of the battle of bloody porch!
Just watched this film for a class. This actor as well as everything else to do with this film was fantastic. I’m only 22 years old. Truly makes me sad I never got to experience films like this in the theater, brand new. Cause they just don’t happen anymore. No movie TODAY makes me drop my jaw and marvel at what just happened. This movie had THREE of those scenes. Peckinpah is amazing cause he was genuine and genius together.

In my opinion, Ride The High Country with McCrea and Scott and The Wild Bunch were Peckinpah's best films. William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien, et al were sensational. Very unfortunate that Peckinpah's directorial work became increasingly erratic as his drug and alcohol problems increased. Borgnine sounds like a charming and personable man.
Junior Bonner.....superb film,has everything EXCEPT blood haha, but goes to show that Peckinpah's style didn't depend on the famous"bloodletting" Steve McQueen,Robert Preston,...the rest..just a finee,funny, bittersweet look at the life of the rodeo cowboy,the one he has chosen,as well as the one he has left behind...and with the same magical editing as the other films..
My maternal grandfather, a western aficionado, liked to take me to see cowboy pictures with him. Grandfather had to lobby my parents to let me see The Wild Bunch (1969) with him for two weeks. I thought that the movie was pretty marvelous at the time. Pretty hard stuff for a thirteen year-old. I was changing schools back in October of 1969. There was a three-day lag or so before I had to report to my new school so on a whim I got up the moxie to walk to the theater in the middle of the day (it was five miles away) and bluff my way in past the film's R-rating. I needn't have worried as there was no hassle and I saw the movie again.
One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when William Holden’s character and Ernie’s are in an argument that’s getting more and more heated. Holden was defending Ryan’s character working for the railroad in tracking them down. Ryan’s men had shot Edmond O’brian. Ernie yelled “damn Deke Thornton to hell!” Holden replied “he gave his word.” Ernie immediately shot back loudly and with menace “that doesn’t count. It’s who you give it to!” Holden is taken aback by the challenge and they are looking at each other like it was a deal breaker to their friendship and partnership. I think I remember Warren Oats making a distracting statement that “we can stay up here kick the hell out of them!” Holden used the interjection to ease tensions with a return to strategic thinking thereby not letting this horrible and quick fight break up the partnership. He sympathized with an old friend’s situation, but didn’t insist on winning an argument so his currant band wouldn’t self destruct. Leadership!
Loved the movie when it came out. Was an out of the box western with all the big actors. I had great gang of guys I hunted dove with for many years, and we started calling our selves the Wild Bunch for fun. Ah, the good ol days.
‘The Wild Bunch’ was really the first movie to show the actual result of being struck by a bullet. Up to then, a gun would be fired, the victim would clutch his abdomen and fall down. Seeing what bullets really did brought a touch of reality to the movies.
I read that it was also the first to use gunshots to match the weapon. Prior to that they were using the canned bang, bang , ricochet sound for every weapon.
The Wild Bunch had a lot of blood flow but it really had a lot of whiskey flow. Earnest was one of several people being honored at a civic event in the 2000's that I attended. At the end of the event, I approached the dais and after congratulating him on the honor he received, I said that I had just rewatched the movie and noticed how much drinking was in the film (of course it wasn't real booze). I jokingly asked Mr. Borgnine if any of that whiskey was real and he emphatically said No. Not a great story but it did happen. I got his autograph at least.
Did anyone ever have a huge-er, bigger, more wonderful smile than Ernest Borgnine? What a great actor and man; missed by all.

I saw the wild bunch as a young teenager. After many viewings I still regard it as THE best Western, genuine masterpiece.

In my opinion, Ride The High Country with McCrea and Scott and The Wild Bunch were Peckinpah's best films. William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien, et al were sensational. Very unfortunate that Peckinpah's directorial work became increasingly erratic as his drug and alcohol problems increased. Borgnine sounds like a charming and personable man.

Junior Bonner.....superb film,has everything EXCEPT blood haha, but goes to show that Peckinpah's style didn't depend on the famous"bloodletting"
Steve McQueen,Robert Preston,...the rest..just a finee,funny, bittersweet look at the life of the rodeo cowboy,the one he has chosen,as well as the one he has left behind...and with the same magical editing as the other films..

My maternal grandfather, a western aficionado, liked to take me to see cowboy pictures with him. Grandfather had to lobby my parents to let me see The Wild Bunch (1969) with him for two weeks. I thought that the movie was pretty marvelous at the time. Pretty hard stuff for a thirteen year-old. I was changing schools back in October of 1969. There was a three-day lag or so before I had to report to my new school so on a whim I got up the moxie to walk to the theater in the middle of the day (it was five miles away) and bluff my way in past the film's R-rating. I needn't have worried as there was no hassle and I saw the movie again.
An argument could be made for The Wild Bunch being the best western ever made. And that’s saying something. A great picture, period.
That was a great Western movie and it opened doors for more realistic movie effects in all genres. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when William Holden’s character and Ernie’s are in an argument that’s getting more and more heated. Holden was defending Ryan’s character working for the railroad in tracking them down. Ryan’s men had shot Edmond O’brian. Ernie yelled “damn Deke Thornton to hell!” Holden replied “he gave his word.” Ernie immediately shot back loudly and with menace “that doesn’t count. It’s who you give it to!” Holden is taken aback by the challenge and they are looking at each other like it was a deal breaker to their friendship and partnership. I think I remember Warren Oats making a distracting statement that “we can stay up here kick the hell out of them!” Holden used the interjection to ease tensions with a return to strategic thinking thereby not letting this horrible and quick fight break up the partnership. He sympathized with an old friend’s situation, but didn’t insist on winning an argument so his currant band wouldn’t self destruct. Leadership!

Loved the movie when it came out. Was an out of the box western with all the big actors. I had great gang of guys I hunted dove with for many years, and we started calling our selves the Wild Bunch for fun. Ah, the good ol days.

‘The Wild Bunch’ was really the first movie to show the actual result of being struck by a bullet.
Up to then, a gun would be fired, the victim would clutch his abdomen and fall down.
Seeing what bullets really did brought a touch of reality to the movies.
I read that it was also the first to use gunshots to match the weapon. Prior to that they were using the canned bang, bang , ricochet sound for every weapon.

The Wild Bunch had a lot of blood flow but it really had a lot of whiskey flow.
Earnest was one of several people being honored at a civic event in the 2000's that I attended. At the end of the event, I approached the dais and after congratulating him on the honor he received, I said that I had just rewatched the movie and noticed how much drinking was in the film (of course it wasn't real booze). I jokingly asked Mr. Borgnine if any of that whiskey was real and he emphatically said No. Not a great story but it did happen. I got his autograph at least.
