  • Check out this Amazing Stud Finder! How to find a stud in the wall. How would you like to be able to find a stud in a plaster wall/drywall wall, easily and every time without an expensive stud finder? Let's look at how to find a wall stud using three conventional methods then l'll explain my foolproof method of how to find a stud in the wall without a stud finder. The best method l think, as described in the video is Method 1.

    METHOD 1. THE MOST FOOLPROOF METHOD OUT THERE!!
    Get yourself a magnet. That's it!! Drywall is attached to studs using metal fasteners. The magnet picks up on these metal fasteners giving you the exact position of the stud!! Now that is amazing!
    The best magnets to use are called 'Rare Earth Magnets, otherwise known as Neodymium Magnets'. You can find these in old computer hard drives that you see on peoples nature strips waiting to be picked up on hard rubbish day or you can get yourself one from any electrical supplies store for around ten to 20 dollars depending on the strength and quality. The one that l have is about 25mm (one inch) in diameter and about 4mm (a bit over one-eighth of an inch) thick.
    Method 2:
    Knock on the wall with your hand in a number of spots until the hollow sound becomes solid. Where the sound is solid there is probably a stub or a least a solid object. This method isn't bad but there is a definite room for error, as you can't exactly pinpoint the stud. You get the general area but it's a bit hit and miss and at other times it can be hard trying to differentiate the difference between a hollow and a solid sound. It is free though so that's good!
    Method 3:
    You can use a store-bought stud finder. Once again these are notoriously unreliable unless you buy a very expensive model.
    Method 4:
    Look on your wall for a powerpoint (outlet box). The bracket that holds the powerpoint (outlet box) in place is attached to the side of a stud. What you need to do is remove the powerpoint and have a look inside the hole to find out what side the stud is. From there you can measure the stud intervals which are usually 16 inches on centre (on centre means from the middle of one stud to the middle of the next stud) if you are in America or 450mm on centre for load-bearing walls and 600mm on centre for non-load bearing in countries like Australia. Obviously, these measurements can change from country to country depending on the Building Code for that Country or State but those measurements l gave are a pretty good indication.
    So there you have it. Get yourself a magnet and happy stud hunting.
    BONUS TIP:
    If you find yourself building or renovating your home from scratch, or removed some plasterboard to do some work, take a photo of the stud wall prior to the drywall or plasterboard going up. This will let you know where the studs are at a later date when you need to find one.

    Remember the screw or nail fastener may have just caught the edge of the stud.
    Do the method multiple times to check for consistency of 16" or 24" O.C. horizontally or check the same stud for other screws/nails vertically to see if they are plumb.
    They could be as much as 1.5" off.

    That is absolutely one of THE BEST tips I have come across out here. My guess is there are guys that work out in the field that do not know of this. Very helpful in my old house that doesn't seem to live up to the 16" center rule. Thanks and I did subscribe. My dad used to have a magnetic stud finder. It's cool, but you are relying on the carpenter to have hit the stud dead on center. Also, where two pieces of drywall meet on a stud, the screws/mails will be near the edge.

    • @paulraymond1804
      @paulraymond1804 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Orion Red Good call, and I agree, however I think the magnetic stud finder is very useful in conjunction with a regular stud finder. I am a professional handy man, having wall mounted hundreds of heavy pictures, TVs and clothes dryers. I have a quality Stanley stud finder and even it sometimes gives me weird, anomalytic readings from time to time due to strange, inconsistent densities (ie insulation or otherwise) behind the plaster.
      I will certainly try this technique next time I need a timber stud. Thanks man. Bonza work and I LOVE this video. 😘😂

    I was getting all depressed because I just picked up the drill for the first time in my life in attempt to put up a coat rack. I didn't know anything about studs and proceeded to drill two wonky looking holes...I got through the drywall and then I hit something and the drill just wouldn't go further! So then I realized that I should have read things up before I did anything...and luckily the first thing that I found in a search about hanging anything up was your video! I watched the entire thing, got all excited and picked up some loose magnets that I had on my fridge and they had a *reaction* to one of the holes!! I feel *blessed* lol. This turned out to be a great learning lesson, if I had successfully been able to put up the rack on first attempt I would not have learned anything further! I do have a question - my drill still won't go further..is it because I have to drill harder to get into the wood/stud? I tried another 5 minutes of moderate speed drilling and no advance. What could be behind the drywall? And would a plastic anchor be right for the stud hole? THANK YOU!! Shared your video to my friends and they totally appreciate your tips!!

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day Sandy. It certainly was a learning curve for you :-) The drill could have stopped for a number of reasons and without seeing it it is hard to determine exactly what it could be. You could have brickwork behind the drywall. You could be using the wrong type of drill bit or there may be a metal lintel behind the drywall. How far through the drywall does the drill bit stop? I'm sorry that l can't be more specific but it's really hard to diagnose from where l am. Thanks for the comment. It's much appreciated. Cheers

    • @badtzmarugirl31
      @badtzmarugirl31 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your response! It went only about 5/8 in into the wall, if that makes any sense. Tried with a different drill bit and it worked (deeper hole)! The first drill bit I used was only for making a hole I suppose, the second one was for wood? Sharper...I think it worked because it got through the stud. Also used a different anchor..the drywall hole is a little cracked around the edges of the anchor but everything seems to be pretty sturdy! We'll see..thank you for your tips and for staying in touch!

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sandy Chen Hi Sandy. I'm happy that you got things sorted out. Just a quick side note. If you happen to find a stud, you don't need a wall anchor as you can screw the wall fixture directly into the stud. Wall anchors are generally only used when a stud can't be found…if that makes sense. Cheers

    Now try that in my house. I have a 60 year old house with walls 3 times thicker than normal plaster with some freaky lining that burns out drill bits. Aston Mowing Have you checked your skirting boards for evidence of nail holes. Normally you put at least one nail in the stud through the skirting board. It might be worth a look. Alternatively, if you have a powerpoint on that wall, remove it and slide a tape in behind the wall till it hits or locates a stud. You can then work out your stud spacing from there. Normal stud spacings are around 16 inches which is 450mm in metric. Hope that helps.

    I've been wanting to hang a pegboard in my kitchen, but I've been putting it off because I didn't know how to find the stud without spending money on a stud finder. I'm going to try this method. It makes so much sense and is inexpensive. Thank you.

    Thanks for your comment Blackuyuyi. Much appreciated. 11kg is fairly heavy. If l was you l would try and find at least one timber stud to screw a wall fixing to and then use a Wall Mate for the other fixing. If you cant find a stud l would probably go for a wall toggle for each fixing. Check out my latest video on how to put up a shelf. It shows how to install a wall toggle. Check out the weight loading on the back of the wall mate packet. It varies as to what size of wall mate you use. Cheers

    Ding-dong - I had an old hard drive, took out the magnets and used a piece of cotton to form a pendulum. Swing it gently backwards and forwards and hey-presto, it sticks to the screws. I marked them with masking tap, drill into the stud frame timber and put in some screws. This enabled me to hang a very heavy framed mirror. All thanks to this video. Cheers!
