My father bought the Hasbro version of this boomerang for me and my brother back in the late 60's. They were made of hard plastic with sharp edges. Took me about ten minutes of unsupervised throwing to take one in the face that sliced into both my eyebrows so they flopped down into my eyes. Still have the scars 55 years later.
@diyforknuckleheads Dad gave them to us, showed how to throw, and catch, then went inside. It was probably 1967, or 1968. Kids were less protected then.
I had a commercial one that I got on a camp trip when I was a kid. We went to some sort of boomerang making place in country Victoria somewhere. They told us to hold it vertically and flick it with the wrist. Had many times where we were on the ground with our hands over our heads when we lost sight of it and you could hear it coming in. Ended up running over it with the mower one day. Apparently Boomerangs and Honda mowers are natural enemies in the wild. Great job and very nice paint scheme. Thanks for the video.
Boy, we made four winged boomerangs, five winged boomerangs, boomerangs that returned with a menacing whoa-whoa-whoa sound, boomerangs to lift 5 pounds... back in the 80s.
@diyforknuckleheads Never. The 60s were the good old days. We didn't have boomerangs here in Ireland but we did get to watch The Magic Boomerang TV show. And we loved the escapades of Tom and his pal Wombat. Now I'm 70 and I have a 3 blade boomerang like yours. I love your paint job.
Boomerangs being banned reminds me a lot of Yo Yo's getting banned when I was a kid in the 90's. Kids kept getting better and better yoyo's made out of aluminium and titanium, eventually slinging them on the ultra thin strings and launching them across the playground. Few kids got hit in the head pretty hard and bam, banned. But that's what happen when you have a bunch of kids that do shoot the moon and around the world as many times and as fast as they could all recess long.

When I was a kid back in the 1950s and 1960s we made conventionally shaped boomerangs using 5/8" plywood coated with epoxy paint which helped their longevity. They were heavy but flew great. We tried using the boomerangs to hunt pheasants in the local fields but never got any. The big surprise was when the boomerang came streaking toward the flying pheasants they would crash dive into the brush as though the boomerang was a hawk or eagle attacking them.
I think the Aboriginal hunting rangs were basically just heavy sticks and didn't return. Non returning boomerangs work better for hunting because they don't curve. Great video, just a question? While the holes on each arm end are aesthetic, wouldn't it be better to keep that mass on the end to help maintain the spin? Perhaps mone the holes more inward? I don't know, just wondering?
Thanks Robert! As you can see from the vid, the boomerang comes back quite easily even been thrown from an old bloke with a dodgy shoulder 😂 The holes would affect the aerodynamics a little but not enough to stop it from returning 👍🇦🇺

I am American and have a cheap plastic boomerang and for a "toy" sold in a tourist trap its a fully functional boomerang. I even made my shin bleed not getting out of the way fast enough. lol. I should make a nice plywood one. That paint job turned out great.
Love the paint job. In 7th grade we had drafting and shop class and a boomerang was one of the projects. Draw it then make it. They were the traditional 2 blade models about 24” Across.. They flew quite well when clear coated.
Glad you liked it mate. There is a few things you need to consider. First, face the wind and then turn about 45 degrees to it. To throw, hold the boomerang between your thumb and forefinger and release it at around the 2 o'clock point. As you release, flick your wrist to generate extra spin and speed. Like anything, it just takes a little trial and error but you very quickly get the hang of it. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
👍😁....Thanks Krickette! Yeah that was my greatest fear so l had it fully covered in drop sheets 😂 My neighbours were scratching their heads thinking what and the hell is this bloke up to 😂 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
I noticed that you are left-handed, so I guess your leading and trailing profiles will be different from a right-handed boomerang. Years ago, I bought some 1/4" aluminium and made one - a regular V-shaped one - laboriously files to an aerofoil profile. I tried it out in a big park, but it flew more than 100 metres, and didn't come back. I thought it had landed in the back garden of a house on the perimeter of the park - but it turned out that it had flown over the house, and was in the front garden. I took it home and made a couple of big holes in it to lighten it, then covered them with tape to recover the aerofoil profile, and when I tried it again, it was *_fabulous!_* It would fly a long way - 90-100m - and come back to pretty close to where I was standing.

👍😁....Thanks mate! I love the three winged models as they look really cool as they fly through the air 👍😁🇦🇺
Ahahaha awesome entry 😅
Cheers Jesper! Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Very cool! Between this, and a top that can achieve a 30 minute spin, i don't know what to make first!
Hang on, hang on, hang on.....a 30 minute spin!! Gotta check that out 👍 Thanks fir watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
What an absolute work of art! Excellent boomerang too. Thanks for the video mate!
Cheers Michael! Appreciate the feedback mate 👍🇦🇺😁
I just love that paint job, and the simplicity in applying the paint. I think I am going to try the with the body of an electric guitar. Thanks!
Thanks Jim! Glad you liked it mate 👍The guitar body would look awesome!! Let me know how you go with it. Cheers 🇦🇺👍😁
Ok, the paint job makes it officially Rad!
👍😁....Cheers mate!
I was born in the 1900’s too. I’m ancient.
Great paint job.
Oh yeah, the ‘Y’ in DIY could be a boomerang!
😂...We are all gettin' on mate....unfortunately !! Glad you liked the paint job and you're right , the "Y" would look good 👍
I remember having a boomerang like that as a kid. It was kind of flexible and made of a rubbery plastic. Worked really well.
👍👍
Please forgive me for that brief moment where I questioned whether or not you were about to ruin your boomerang with those initial squiggles of paint. I had no idea of the awesomeness that was to come! I have never made or used a boomerang..... that is until probably a short time from now Awesome project, cant wait to give it a whirl (heh) !!! ❤️
😂....Don't worry Mary, l was initially questioning my decision to paint it as well! Good luck with yours. Just remember that you have Left Handed Boomerangs as well as Right Handed Boomerangs. The one l made was for a left hander. If in doubt, l have a link to the Plans in the Description Box under the video that you can follow for each type. Good luck 👍😁🇦🇺
Nice one uncle knackers love the paint job
Thanks Richard! Glad you liked it mate 👍 I'm definitely going to use that technique for future projects 😁🇦🇺👍
Great wholesome video; awesome thank you.
No worries at all mate! Glad you liked it. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
good design, will have a go at making one.
👍😁...Thanks Chris 👍😁🇦🇺
You are absolutely right: how can something fun be banned? That is not right. 29.07.2023, 12:59
So true 👍😁
Another awesome video. What a ripper!! Gonna try make one as soon as possible.
Thanks mate! If you do have a crack at making one, just be aware that the one l made in the video was for a left hander. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
Awesome, I had a three wing Nerf boomerang as a kid in the 80s.
Yep they work really well too mate 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Wow ,what a Boomerang, never seen a paint job like that, awesome 🪚
👍😁....Thanks Steve! Yeah the paint job turned out pretty special. Thanks for watching 👍🇦🇺
I was inspired by this and figured I’d give it a try on the old laser cutter. Best boomerang I’ve ever had. Comes back with very little effort at all
Fantastic! Glad it went well Eric 👍😁🇦🇺
That was surprisingly awesome
👍😁...Cheers Ryan! Seriously, these things are so. much fun! Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Awesome paint job👌
😁👍....Thanks Craig! Appreciate the comment mate 👍😁🇦🇺

Thanks for a great video. I love the paint scheme! I always enjoy learning about things from the land down under. Cheers from the USA.
No worries at all mate...glad you liked the video and thanks for taking the time watch 👍😁🇦🇺🇦🇺
I am American and have a cheap plastic boomerang and for a "toy" sold in a tourist trap its a fully functional boomerang. I even made my shin bleed not getting out of the way fast enough. lol. I should make a nice plywood one. That paint job turned out great.
😂.....Gotta be a little careful with those 'toys' John 😂 Glad you liked the paint job mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Best of the best! Awesome paint job! Love the dad jokes, keep ‘‘em coming
👍...Thanks for watching Ron 👍🇦🇺😁
Love the paint job. In 7th grade we had drafting and shop class and a boomerang was one of the projects. Draw it then make it. They were the traditional 2 blade models about 24”
Across.. They flew quite well when clear coated.
Thanks Keith 👍👍 Kids would have an awesome time making these in class 👍😁🇦🇺
Wow,freakin awesome paint job
👍😁...Cheers Mark! Appreciate the feedback mate 😁🇦🇺👍
Ok so now for us city kids, how do you hold it and throw it? That paint job you did was really great!! I’m gonna do that. Thanks!
Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
Fun learning informational video! Nothing AI about it, good for you, (& us)!
Spot on!....NO A.I. in sight 👍👍👍👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Many happy returns.
😂....Touche 👍
The whole video, excellent but the painting job was fantastic! Did you get paint all over the grass?
Would this have flown farther and had a better flight end hover with the holes being smaller?
