Add much more green areas and dining (vs. Roosevelt), I often place it towards the top neighborhoods in the city. However, one must actually go there to include it on a list. Kindly stay away.

The people under 35 that live in these areas are generally incredibly wealthy, and not representative of the diversity as a whole that makes NYC great. I often find myself liking the walkability, the architecture, the history of what the place was and to some extent still remains, but the people now…?

I lived in Cobble Hill from 1995-2006. It is not up and coming. It was up and coming maybe 30-35 years ago. My 3rd floor walkup on Court Street - the eastern boundary of the neighborhood, not Smith Street which is in Boreum Hill - now rents for $8K per month. The quality of residential architecture in Cobble Hill is several levels above that of Williamsburg. There is no comparing the two.

Great video featuring some of my favorite neighborhoods in the city. My personal favorite neighborhood is Chinatown because it has the narrowest streets in the city, a super interesting culture, some of the best eats, neon lights, pedestrianized streets such as Doyer & Pell, and it's generally one of the quietest & most pleasant areas to walk around in once you get off Canal.

Willamsburg is a nice neighborhood. I love it there. It did get somewhat gentrified but people are exaggerating because the rent got gentrified without most of the buildings getting gentrified.

  • @liljaygray

I live in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill, and can say that it will not change much. Most of it is under historic protection, the median rent for a 1 bedroom is 4K/month (making it unaffordable for most people), and the spots for businesses are Court & Smith street, which are almost all local businesses. People in the neighborhood enjoy that it’s NOT gentrified like Williamsburg, and will fight to keep it that way.

West Villiage deserves to be #1 on this list without a doubt. I do think it’s somewhat impractical in terms of groceries and laundry matts. There is no Wegmans in the neighborhood. It’s all super niche stuff. That being said it looks like a storybook. It needs modernization for many of the buildings. I say keep the facade but modernize the electrical/AC/plumbing etc for these buildings.

Chelsea Meatpacking while I love it… isn’t practical. I would’ve rated it lower than other places for living….but it’s pretty amazing. The bike lanes there are amazing. I noticed that no black/minority areas a represented on this list. The brick needs to be smoothed out just enough so people can walk on it without it being annoying to walk on.

THIS. THIS. THIS. I know some may scoff at this list as gentrifier/tourist ideal and say “go to the actual city i.e. bx/qns” but genuinely I agree. What makes a neighborhood great in my opinion is its navigability and neighborhoods that have short street lengths and tight streets are the best because you can wander and get lost in them, everything below 14th street is scaled perfectly and the only knock I’d give it is lack of green space, more car free or no parking areas would be good too. Midtown west of 5th is horrible imo 5th to 6th ave has got to be the longest block in the city rivaling some Queens and Staten Island suburban streets and it’s annoying to traverse. The length of blocks between 3rd and 5th is the perfect length thank god for lex and madison. Other places with good bones is all of the bronx west of the bx river needs investment, a shame Robert got 95% of his highways done there, Windsor terrace/Gowanus/DTBK road diets along with removing unnecessary car infrastructure like the unfinished prospect expressway would go nicely to pair with the new developments nearing completion, and finally the coney island and rockaway peninsulas, they could be amazing beach destinations just get rid of all those parking lots in exchange for parks and plazas.
