- Da- and Wo-Compounds in German can be difficult to understand, but today's video will show you how to use all of them and which prepositions can't use the da- and wo-compounds. This includes the following da-compounds: dafür, darum, dadurch, dagegen, daraus, dabei, damit, danach, davon, dazu, daran, darauf, dahinter, darin, daneben, darüber, darunter, davor, and dazwischen. The wo-compounds include: wofür, worum, wodurch, wogegen, woraus, wobei, womit, wonach, wovon, wozu, woran, worauf, wohinter, worin, woneben, worüber, worunter, wovor, and wozwischen. Da- and Wo-Compounds are adverbs used to replace prepositional phrases in German in order to remove redundant words and make conversations flow better. They are also commonly used in idiomatic expressions.

Learn German with Herr Antrim Haöo Lewi!ir ist schlect wegen dem Heis und du hast kein Video heute. Aber schriebst, hast das versprochen daß wirst du neue Videos zu haben! Ich hoffe es sehr! Und es ist heis, mit 37 C! Umglaublich Lewi! Mein jungere Bruder kam nach Hause gestern mit seiner Freundin. Aber es ist kein zu tun denn am morgen, 7.30 uhr r hat unsern Eltern anrufen daß der Trial im September wird! Am welchem Tag, nicht zu wißn! Wir glauben nicht, daß die Arbeitern konten keine Anrufe zu uns machen! Aber sowie ich weis daß sie werden am Samstag nach Ravensburg gehen. Ich hätte enen Plan Lewi: Was ä? Sowie ich habe dir gesagt, meine Eltern laßn mich nicht zu fliegen. Mein jungere Bruder, und seine Freunin leider nur Wagen nutzen, aber wan ich habe ihm gefragt, könten sie zum Urlaub gehen, im Jahren nicht, keine Schanz, aber im nächsten KJar, vielleicht. Sie werden nur mit dem Wagen fahren zwischen Ravensburg und Bekescsaba und Gyula leider. Aber mein jungere Bruder sagte, daß könten sie fliegen, natüröich r sagte, ich könte fliegen, wan sie in Europa fliegen. Leider bevor sie müsten nach hause fahren mit dem Auto! Ich könte nur von Ungarn fliegen. Zum Beispiel wan sie nach Barcelona oder Madrid fliegen, zuerst wir müsten entscheiden, wer kauft und zähltdie Ticketten und andere Zahlen. Wan sie möchten, natürlich lieber das Flugzeug am Sontag fliegt, sie müsten mindestens am Donnerstag zu kommen. Am Freitag sie könten zu pausen bitte. Danach, am Samstag müsten wir mit dem Wagen nach BP fahren. Wen das Flughafenparkplatz billiger wäre ok, wir mit dem Wagen fährten. Aber es ist teuer bitte, man müsten mit dem Zug fahren. Meine Kusine, die in der USA lebt, sie fährt mit direktem, spezielln Transfer. Sowie sie unterschriebt das, s ist nur allertage Minibus ist. Durch dem Weg der Fahrer leider mus mehr Reisender nehmen unterschiedene Punkten. Sowie sie sagte, der Minibus ist eigentloh ein Taxi. Wir haben eine anderen Kusine auch. Sie wont in Budapest, sie ist 45 jare alt. Wir müsten das Transfer da bestellen. Das Ziel ist natürlich der Flughafen. Natürloch man mus die rechte Fluggesellschafft un Preis und den Flughafen, davon wir müsten fliegen, so wir müsten das auswahlen! Und wir müsten 2, ZWEI Transfer nehmen! In Ungarn, und in Spanien, damit wir fahren vom Flughafen in El Prat, eine Kleinstadt nicht weit von Barcelona, zum ausgewaltem Hotel mit. Die Zurückfahrt ist gleich. Aber ihr Weg nach hause, Ravensburg schwer wäre: Den das Aschloch Scheff nur ser kurze Freizeit gibt. Mit dem Zug nach Bekescsaba, danach, Gyula! Wegen der kürzer Zeit, sie müsten nach ihrem Wagen umsteigen und Ravensburg! Der andere Weg ist schwer wäre. Wen sie von Deutschland fliegen, ich müste mit dem Wagen nach Ravensburg fahren! Leider der Weg ist zu lang für mich! Sowie ich sagte, ich fiel mich schlecht, wan in 2013 nach Italien mit dem Auto fur! Die Woche in Italien war sehrgut aber deie Fahrt scheiße war.

Da-words refer back to something that was used with a preposition or to a whole phrase, while you cannot use da-words directly for persons, you can use them indirectly when the phrase with the preposition refers to a person or when it refers a whole phrase. It's more about grammar than about things having a personality or are persons, because da-words form a bond with a preposition and this bond tells us to what the da-word is refering, this bond alone cannot refer to person due to its grammatical function or in other words you cannot mistakingly use da-words for persons, because it wouldn't make any sense at all and would be just gibberish.

Mein liebstes Da-Wort ist darob. Es ist zwar veraltet. Aber man klingt sehr gehoben, wenn man es verwendet. Die dazugehörige Präposition ob wurde aus dem Lateinischen entlehnt (geborgt). Ob bedeutet wegen und darob bedeutet deswegen.
Ich bin ob des neuen Videos glücklich. Das Video ist sehr informativ. Ich freue mich darob. Das Wort worob existiert aber nicht. Da verwendet man weswegen.
Man klingt sehr gehoben, riskiert dafür aber konfuse Blicke! Viele jüngere Muttersprachler kennen dieses Wort wahrscheinlich nicht.

Some Germans might use a preposition plus was (für was, mit was, gegen was) instead of wofür, womit or wogegen and it may sound right to an English speaker, but it's bad German.

Hi, I still find it difficult to understand why in this sentence darum is used like this: (Darum habe ich es gekauft)= which means that is why I bought it. BUT darum means around that. So why?
You could think of it as "Around this logic, I bought it."

Actually the question about the book would be "Wovon handelt es?" (What is it about?) and "Davon handelt es."
"Worum handelt es sich?" is more general and would elicit a descriptive answer like "Es handelt sich um ein Buch."

Are German contractions mandatory? Thus can someone just say *In dem Bad* instead of saying *im Bad*?
No. Despite of traditional teachings, "im" is not a contraction but a dative marking on the preposition "in". Why? Definite article like "dem" carry definiteness with them, that's why they are definite articles. "im" and "am" do not carry this definiteness, because "-m" is only a dative marking not a marking for definiteness. The marking for definiteness is d-. How to see it? I can say "Ich gehe in dem Bad, in dem Bad und in dem Bad" and with it, I am talking about three different bathrooms. I canNOT say "Ich gehe im Bad, im Bad, im Bad." because I am talking about the same bathroom and repeat "in the bathroom" like an idiot. See it like "i am going in that room, in that room and in that room." vs. "I am going in the room, in the room, and in the room."
That being said, if you wanna express definiteness, use "in dem Bad", if not use "im Bad".
