    There's sort of effective workaround by lowering the black levels by adjusting gamma or Nightvision mode, that way you can kinda turn VA into IPS panel (it becomes just as washed out as IPS with little to no black smearing), in that regard VA turns out to be more versatile when you play with settings, whereas IPS could not achieve blacks or vibrancy of VA.

    Same for me. I was buying ROG Strix XG32VC in hope that backlight strobe would eliminate smearing at all. It does help, but introduces new issues like colored glow around moving objects. The VA black smearing was not only a problem in games, but also while browsing, because moving font again gets blurred by black smearing. So truth is that VA improved in response time, but not for blacks. To me, VA is not acceptable. I will try IPS and check, if contrast is an issue for me.

  • @Nightikzzz
    @Nightikzzz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    nobody talks about that but VA is okay on low refresh rate panels, It really depends on slowest black to grey response time. What i mean:
    60hz is about 16ms to refresh every frame. If slowest black to grey is 10ms you will not see black smearing
    but if you set ur pricy gaming VA panel into 160 hz you will get 6ms refresh time BUT your black to grey is still 10 ms. As result you able to see that slow response time on hight hz rate. There is only two ways to fix this:
    Wash out black colors to make them grey (where response time is faster then refresh rate for example set '0' black to '50' where response time is faster then 6ms).
    Set ur refresh rate to slowest black response time - 100 hz for example. But this wont work if slowest response time of black is arund 30ms (30hz).
    So thats a reason why high hz VA panels is just useless
    Switching from washed out blacks of VA to normal IPS panel will be an upgrade

      Hey, thanks for your comment. It's very informative and will help me as a consumer.
      I play mostly narrative single-player games and don't really care about having the most competitive setup. Instead, I'd like to be able to play a horror game with proper "color definition" in black areas. But apparently, as a budget gamer, that's too much to ask.
      Do you know If I can use VRR on series X with the monitor set to 60hz-100hz? If yes, I'll be getting a VA. If I can't reconcilie true blacks with the series X's VRR, I'll go for an IPS.

    VA's are weird, sometimes they smear a lot more than IPS, sometimes slightly more, and sometimes less. The best Samsung VA's right now are actually faster in in pixel response at all levels than the fastest IPS, only thing faster are the best TN's; but these VA's are pricey. The blacks and contrast are worth it, even if you have to be extra careful to read reviews to make sure the Monitor you are eying has acceptable pixel response time.

    • @V1CT1MIZED
      @V1CT1MIZED ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone that has two Samsung G7s I can honestly say the contrast isn't that great as it is much lower than standard VA and suffers from backlight bleeding. Plus the amount of issues you can have with the monitors due to bad QC makes them a gamble if you don't want the hassle of a potential return. Also to avoid VRR flicker you have to use "VRR control" which raises the threshold for LFC to be activated to something around 80hz which is bad when most are at the highest 48hz. Plus smearing is still there, albeit hard to notice in games but certain websites will show it. I would like the new G8 Neo, but unsure if that has similar issues or if they fixed it. I don't want to spend over 1k to find out.

    0:23 this is a perfect example of how bad VA is in Windows/scrolling text. Halo ghosting / black blob that follows all text and makes it unreadable. So bad. It's also bad in games where it causes a "jelly" feeling. And dark objects in the scene will cause the entire image to become "darker" while you move the camera due to the "darkness" "lingering" in the spot that showed the dark object on VA panels.
    I found out that the core issue is that if you ask a VA panel pixel to go from dark to bright or bright to dark, it takes on average ~30 milliseconds to do it, due to the pixel technology (crystal rotation method) used inside a VA monitor. That means an equivalent of having a 33 hz monitor.
    So on a 240hz VA monitor that you play a game where you rotate the camera in a scene with both bright and dark parts in the image, you are actually gaming at 33 fps/33 hz on your 240hz monitor. And you get a massive "motion blur" trail while moving, because the VA technology cannot change the brightness fast enough. Basically your 240hz VA monitor is showing 33fps/hz, but all blurred/smeared together.
    Those slow VA pixel transitions are even worse at higher refresh rates... And to try and lessen the effect, gaming VA monitors have to use an "overdrive" technology which introduces overshoot (fake halos around objects which move with the object), which gets worse as the refresh lowers if you use VRR (Freesync/Gsync).
    Okay so that settles it, I will 100% stay on IPS monitors. IPS has significantly more saturated and beautiful colors. Besides, I mostly do Windows work / browsing the web, where VA is awful garbage due to its blurriness of text/scrolling. Their only downside is 1000:1 contrast instead of ~3000:1 for VA, but good IPS monitors still have excellent *looking* contrast. And for someone who has a lot of money to spend, there are even IPS models such as ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQX which uses 576 FALD dimming zones with micro-LEDs to basically get million-to-1 contrast ratios (extremely dark black levels rivaling OLED). I will be happy with a normal 1000:1 IPS though.

      Check the bench at 0:50 which shows the bad experience I had quite well. You can see that the contour of the bench is far more "streched" or blurry during movement than on the right side IPS. It looks like the blacks are smeared during movement. Also while gaming Pillars of Eternity (a lot dark scenes) I noticed flickering of black colors.

    • @Anreii
      @Anreii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends on what context you're in. Like when I'm scrolling sideways through a game map, I have to slow down scrolling by a lot because the black smears the text so much. Hopefully it's just my monitor that's so bad and the issue can be reduced with another va, but in this case it's pretty off putting.

    Black smearing is annoying when you slowly scroll a web page and text becomes hard to read. Also it sucks in some games which display text that moves together with your character (like text of objects laying around in Diablo). However to me the biggest issue with black smearing is in space sim games like X3 where stars simply dissappear when you rotate your ship and pop out when you stop. This looks simply ridiculous for a game where half of the time you're supposed to enjoy the view. I replaced IPS panel with VA and black smearing is the only true problem I have.

    • @starly1974
      @starly1974 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I upgraded from 1080p 144hz TN monitor to 34'' 1440p 144hz VA ultrawide . At first I was absolutely in love with it. However after my first encounter with dark level smearing I was absolutely disgusted.
      I also played some space games and on one hand it was amazing how much I could see. But then you move a camera and 80% of stars disappear and that just sucked. I sold my ultrawide and got myself 16:9 1440p 180hz IPS panel I I like it so much better. I'll never touch any VA panel again. Now I'm waiting for more IPS options in 21:9 category because I do miss that aspect ratio a bit.

    • @andrzej2574
      @andrzej2574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@starly1974 Thanks for sharing. Great that you found a solution! I also swapped my poor VA panel for something else. I bought Samsung G7 monitor which although still being VA has incredible performance in terms of motion blur (no problem with stars in X3!). It's like it's in its own league outmatching all other VA panels and most IPS panels and loosing only to top gaming IPS monitors. Loosing severly I must sadly say, but first of all, gaming IPS panels are twice as expensive, and secondly G7 is still a VA so its blacks remain black and not grey as in IPS. Too bad Samsung went cheap on testing as this monitor has couple flaws which wouldn't even be tolerable in low-end budget monitors. Sometimes it won't wake up from sleep, and I have to unplug it from power and plug it back. Also Freesync and GSync have this horrible flaw that when FPS drops below their minimum VRR frame rate then monitor suddenly changes its brightness for dark on-screen elements, and when FPS rise back to acceptable VRR range then brightness reverts to what it was. When this happens fast, like 10 times per second, then the outcome is a horrible flickering of image. This happens in web browsers and games alike. Best not to enable Freesync at all to avoid it. And finally this crazy monitor curve, I don't know if I'll ever get used to it being so weird.
      I don't understand why someone has to sacrifice so much just to avoid motion blur, or black level smearing. I recently read that people who completely can't stand it go back to CRT monitors based on Sony Trinitron and sacrifice resolution, aspect ratio, contast, brightness, sharpness, ... :)

    0:17 is a perfect example of how bad the contrast is on IPS panels. Look at the floor tiles on the IPS vs the VA panel. Everything is so washed out on IPS. There's a reason why all the high end TVs talk about their contrast ratios. That inky black really makes all the difference. Most IPS panels are 1000:1 contrast while VA panels are 3000:1 or in some cases 4000:1. I know, we all want OLED gaming monitors. No more IPS/VA debate. Just image retention.
