    Another interesting scenario I'd love to see is using parsec in office or in home. Scenario: I have a server functioning as my plex media server and a "cloud" gaming PC. I'd like to have access to this PC in multiple rooms (example I'm playing a game in the living room, fiancee wants to watch a movie or TV, so I move to the bedroom) my setup entails multiple nvidia shields, potentially even one setup on a PC monitor with keyboard and mouse in the guest bedroom. I'd love to see (either nvidia shield, apple tv or whatever cheap option to use for parsec) in home and the difference when you are able to open it up full bore with a much higher bitrate over your local LAN. Are we at the point where we don't need multiple gaming PCs

I am currently looking into having my whole process work around remote so I'm looking into Surface 7/8 like ultrabooks like the Lenovo X12 and Asus flip 13 the latter being the cheapest but way underpowered. I literally just installed Parsec for the first time today for sharing a PC over a home network. With under 5ms total encode/decode/network latency, I swear it feels local. If it wasn't for the free version's 4:2:0 encoding, you wouldn't be able to tell the computer was in a different room and not under the desk. However one big drawback for me is that it requires hardware video encode on the host. I wanted to use this for my work VDI machine, and VDIs (something like a VMWare instance running in your employer's server room) don't usually have hardware accelerated graphics. So no hardware encode, and thus Parsec. I'm stuck with remote desktop (which even over a LAN is much slower than Parsec, let alone over a VPN to another city), or even worse, VMWare Horizon, which makes remote desktop seem lightning fast by comparison.
    In any case, for my LAN use case, Parsec is amazing, enormously better than remote desktop.

    This kind of thing could be really good for the Steam Deck to ramp up the visuals to what your home PC can do and play on the Steam Deck and over Wi-fi at home, you shouldn't have any issues with bandwidth and considering the Steam Deck is 720p resolution, it should work alright for many gamers whiles streaming over the internet.
    Being as the Steam Deck is at a 720p resolution and the screen is much smaller, bandwidth should be far less of an issue and the image quality should look great compared to a bigger screen where more bandwidth is needed.
    All of this will allow gamers with the Steam Deck to ramp up visual and maintain 60fps but at 720p in portable mode, with that, it would be interesting in what bandwidth you would need for a solid image at 720p.
    I'm wondering, wouldn't streaming at 720p and using less bandwidth reduce latency?

M1's single-core performance is by no means bad, it's on par or slightly ahead of its rivals in its power bracket. It's no threadripper killer, but it'll serve you well enough.

    TL;DR: Parsec is the best of the services they tested for latency-critical applications but with even it having a whopping >90 ms of latency when under *ideal* conditions, "low-input-latency streaming" very much still remains an oxymoron.

      90 ms isn't that bad at all. Many games of the last generation had almost as much latency built in on the system itself. Its not ideal, but 90ms of end to end latency is acceptable imo.

    • @KITOMERO
      @KITOMERO 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think about it though: If native machine gaming latency is already ~45ms like DF suggested, that only leaves ~30ms of encode time, ~10ms of decode time, and ~10ms or more of ping time, which is always going to exist due to distance over-the-internet.
      It's impossible to lower this latency much more, other than reducing the already low ~30ms encoding time with a more efficient codec, or lowering the host PC's rendering latency itself.
      50ms of streaming overhead within the same city, compared to native PC gaming is more than fair. Considering that connecting to a server halfway across the country already incurs that 50ms as ping time.

    This test is interesting because it's quite opposite of my experience. I tried streaming from my old PC ( with GTX 660 in it ) to my office 15 km away using Moonlight and Steam. With Moonlight, I had constant stuttering while Steam was incredibly stable with minimal latency. I could notice the latency when playing shooters on the mouse, but with a gamepad, latency in Destiny 2 or Tekken 7 was barely noticeable. Now, I did not have Steam installed on the client PC, I used a dedicated Steam Link app for Windows. I wonder if there are any differences between Steam Link and streaming built into Steam client.
    When I tried streaming over the local network, the latency and image quality was very similar, but Steam has one big advantage worth mentioning over Moonlight ( I don't know about the other streaming applications). When you are streaming with Steam, the mouse movement is not streamed over the network but it's rendered locally on your computer ( if that makes sense). So in general computer use or playing games like RTS, you don't feel any latency at all because your mouse moves like it was moved on a local computer, just like with RDP built into Windows.

If you're elsewhere, you can setup a way to remotely connect to a device on your network, which then in turn sends the Magic Packet to wake up your PC. For example, many routers can do this. From Wikipedia: "Most home routers are able to send magic packets to LAN; for example, routers with the DD-WRT, Tomato or PfSense firmware have a built-in Wake-on-LAN client. OpenWrt supports both Linux implementations for WoL etherwake and WoLs."
