When I taught English in South Korea (Daejeon), I had a student who went to the U.S. for her final two years of high school. She came back to visit after her junior and I asked her how was homecoming. Her face lit-up and she couldn't say enough about how much fun it was.
I personally haven’t heart about dress rentals, but I also have never looked into it. Many stores in the US actually will NOT accept refunds/returns on dresses bought during prom season because they wouldn’t make any money otherwise. So a large percentage of girls who go to prom (including me) still have their prom dresses if they haven’t resold it or gifted it to someone else.
Dress rentals is done a lot in Asia, I don’t know much in America but from where I live in southeast Asia we do that a lot. I went to Canada for school and I was looking into renting for my grad dress last year. Tho I wasn’t able to start finding because pandemic happened. But now seeing these comments here I don’t know if its possible to rent a dress 😅I had 3 months left before grad and if it wasn’t possible I will be forced to buy a dress lol
I’m 31 and my prom dress is still in my closet lol! It was a shorter dress though so it luckily doesn’t take up too much space. Some of my friends came in full cupcake style hoop skirted $600 gowns, I wonder if they’ve sold them or if they are still in their closets.

But for prom you have to be a senior unless it is someone else's prom and you are their date. Then you can be any age in high school or even a young adult that is no longer in high school. Mine was really fun.
I think its nice for young people to get all dressed up like they're celebrities and *innocently* party, especially when its their last year of high school and ya busted your butt trying to prepare for college. It would be cool if other countries could experience it, atleast once.🤷♀️
Prom is not just for teens, they have adult proms for people who didn’t get to go to prom and who wants to have another one. I wish I knew someone who does adult proms 😩 I want to go again!!!

Proms in the U.S. are formal parties for high school seniors (usually age 18) just before graduation and are usually held in late April or in the month of May. They usually take place in hotel ballrooms. Girls go all out selecting their dress and accessories. They either buy their dress or sometimes borrow from friend. Their prom dates dress in formal wear and wear a tie to match the girl’s dress. Many prom attendees hire limos to take them to and from the prom. Friends with their dates often gather at someone’s house for pre-prom photos and refreshments. After prom gatherings are also common. Prom night activities often stretch well into the next day. Another high school tradition is the annual “Homecoming” dance, which is a semi-formal dance held at the school in October for high school students of all ages. The dance is usually held in conjunction with a home game of football that takes place earlier in the day. Some girls and guys are invited to multiple proms and homecomings in the same season, so it can be costly.
Most of these are probably for American proms, because if you wore some of these dresses to a British prom you would probably be looked at funny. Prom sadly isn't as big in Britain (England, not sure about the rest of the UK and Ireland) as it is in America. I wish it was bigger though. However I didn't get my Prom because I am part of the year group who didn't have their GCSE exams and prom got cancelled because of covid.
Ooooo I’m EARLY early! Lol. Let’s get into it!!!! Okay, so it’s been years since my prom, but I remember literally everything from that night. I didn’t have a date. I took a party bus there with friends and we had so much fun. Someone snuck alcohol on there and there was a stripper pole 🤣 So we had lots of laughs before we even got to the venue. My school held our prom night at the Omni hotel ballroom. I was on prom committee and had an idea of what it would look like prior to the actual event. Then afterwards, our school rented out Dave and Busters for an after prom lock-in and we played games, drove go carts, played mini golf, and ate as much as we wanted all night. They even served breakfast in the morning for us. Now, regarding the runway thing, our school didn’t have a prom fashion show lol. Our prom king and queen were voted on before we even got to prom lol. We voted on them when we voted for all the other senior class titles like “Class clown”, “most likely to succeed”, etc. So we knew who it would be before we even got there and they wore their sashes and crowns the whole night. I wish I still had my prom dress, but freshman year of college, I donated it so another girl could wear one 🥰

I still have 9 dresses from high school.. one from each homecoming dance every year and two proms at my school and two for a different schools prom I went to with a friend and homecoming court.Unfortunately most girls have to buy their dresses brand new or second hand because at least for me I had to get alterations done on each dress because they were too long/big. Mine ranged from $300-500. Sounds crazy now. Idk if I’d be as generous as my mom was to me for my future kids hahah. But I’d like to get rid of those dresses since you can never wear them again.
A lot of guys want to drink and Sleep with their dates after the Prom is over, so the parents want their daughters home on time. My Dad had to get to know my date weeks before the prom to see what kind of boy he was, after meeting my Dad my date was a complete gentleman of course because my dad was 6'3" and very strong, so he brought me home on time. My date was so afraid of my Dad but Dad would never have hurt him he just played mind games with him. We went our separate ways, it's been years now and I've been married to someone for most of those years my husband got along great with my Dad. I was very close to my Father while he was alive but I'll never forget how he was always there trying to protect me. Showing the prom dresses from TiK ToK brought back all those memories Thanks Dad for always being there when I needed you. Thanks you guys for bringing back some happy memories Stay safe

Depending on how many times you go to prom, a woman can spend way more on Prom dresses than a wedding dress. Most people only go to prom as a senior and maybe as a junior (final year of school, and year before the final year). In my school, younger students could only attend prom if they came as the date of an older student.
We don't have proms or homecoming in Canada, but something similar. We get all dressed up and do a walk; like a promanade, for two - two-and-a half hours with the full graduating class. Then go home and most of us change and then head out to party. If you're legal in your province you can even drink

Don't worry...I am from Bangladesh. There is no prom here too😭 and I have always seen this dramas and movies where the central plot revolves around these proms and I had never been more unrelatable☹
during proms over decades, it's where the girls sometimes become pregnant after parties, in the car, and hotel or motel visits, one reason Korean parents wouldn't want that tradition. usually, the king or queen is chosen by popularity in school sports, activities clubs etc. in the 50's early 60's usually had to have a date for the prom to be able to attend so the young man usually asked the girl, past few decades sometimes girls go together if they don't have a date. they go in groups with a limousine. those not popular among us didn't attend, but last 20 years I liked the tradition of having special needs prom or inviting a family member or friend with disability thought that was cool.
That literally never happens no one gets pregnant after proms 💀 it’s just a way to express that the oldest group of students are leaving and going into a new chapter in there lives
All it would take is one school wanting to do it and it would probably spread. Kids should have fun and go to a safe party when they are in school. No need to call it prom just do it for some other event or holiday

I went to prom all 4 years of high school because I went with older boys and now I go as a chaperone because I’m a teacher lol. Prom is so fun.
